So basically it's to shatter the soil to create better air and water movement in the soil. It's supposed to promote faster turf healing to allows play to resume sooner. In short, it helps maintain firm putting surfaces. It's supposed to fix "compaction" of the turf that results from high traffic. Aeration holes allow excess moisture to evaporate and promote gas exchange in the soil, resulting in stronger root systems and turf that is better able to tolerate golfer traffic.
