Hey everyone,
I live at an apartment with stilts right next to Buffalo Bayou in Houston. The water has already breeched the first floor as you can see. Once they release the dam at 2am, the water is supposed to rise 4-6 inches PER HOUR and not to mention there is just no end in sight for this storm. I've kept high spirits and prepared as best I could. The complex even opened up empty apartments above for us to me to. I cannot begin to explain how petrified I am right now and don't want to tell all my loved ones that. So I'm telling you. I just want to break down but I can't yet..
Oh and I smell like a dog's ass and have no idea when the next shower or bath will happen. So all y'all out there with running water, take a good one for me. Edit:
Thank you all for the kind words. When I was feeling low, you guys helped inspire me to be strong. I'm lucky to still be above water and safe. The apartment community has kept me going. I've got water, food, and friends ( though cabin fever is strong and tensions can be high at times). We still have days of rain and they are NOW opening the floodgates (they didn't last night so more people could leave if they can)x This city has a lot of rebuilding to do once the aftermath sets in. I'll be here helping. You all have been such an inspiration, so continue your kind words because you each have made a change. #teamimgur

Oh and I bathed with rain water from a fountain out of a small cooler. It was the best bath of my life....

Hey dude, stay safe. My parents live in Dickinson and lost everything last night. It's going to suck, but it's gonna be okay. You're alive.

My sister is <1 mile from the flood zone from the releases. I keep telling her to leave but she won't. Stay safe, friend.

Stay safe. I hope things dont turn out too bad for you

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Distance from water / 4 will give you an approx time in hrs until your next bath starts.....stay safe. Move up a level maybe?

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

Fingers crossed for you, be safe.

@op hang in there...sorry this is happening.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Been through this. Have a small evac kit ready. Change of cloths , dry shoes. Buddy up with a neighbor. Hugs.

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Always welcome to evacuate our way, we're in Beaumont and high and dry at least for the moment.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm in SC but I have room for 4 if anyone is evacuating this way.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's been 7 hours, you ok @op? Some people have been posting on Facebook asking for help and have been rescued because of it

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Still doing okay! It's receded about a foot. Waiting on some more dam action. Cabin fever is kicking in.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Shit man. Be safe and don't give up hope

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Much love.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hang in there, brother (or sister). Be glad you don't own the building, or have to worry about rebuilding it. Be safe, be patient, and think

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

of the cool stories you'll get to tell of how you weathered the great flood of 2017!

HEy @op how are you now ? are you ok ?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Still surviving.the community in my complex is binding together. It's really fantastic. Thanks for the concern!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do you know how it looks like on Eldridge/Briarforest? I live on the first floor and have been on lock down at my work place since friday...

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I got out for a few hours. At 6PM Westheimer was half flooded. Eldridge is on some parts bad. Around the bayou everything is blocked.Be safe

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wish I could help you friend, but I have no idea.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's ok. Maybe I can convince my boss to let me go home for 3 hours. I ran out of clean clothes... i hope you are safe!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It got pretty bad over by Nottingham Park last night. It stopped just in time to spare the houses and apartments across from the park

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Im on the 4th floor. Im fine.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hey friend!!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also in a different country, so Im fine. Im really fine.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope you stay safe! Love from Australia

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How are you leaving? If your cars outside it's underwater too much to drive. Staying were you are and moving up floors is much safer than1/2

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Hopefully a boat

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is no road to leave. It's completely submerged. Cars in a parking garage high up.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Being caught outside on a road that's flooding.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thinking about you in the shower @op.

8 years ago | Likes 192 Dislikes 1

That reads creepy

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Dare I say, your having a shower thought?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm thinking about you in the shower. Guess that needs italics now.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ph... phrasing?

Me too

But you asked me to think about OP.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Sorry, that was my bad...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait, if that's you, then who am I brushing against?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't stop.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not gay if it's for a good cause.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

So... where're you shitting?

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And this is why you don't want to drink the water or use it to bathe...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We filled the washer up with water to fill the tanks. The ole " if it's brown flush it down if it's yellow let it mellow.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

It'll probably just be floating up into the flooded apartments. You could save yourself some time and just cut a hole in your floor

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Post Katrina we were told to line the toilet with walmart bags for the brown, no power to water plants. No water/no gas/ no power: the worst

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don’t wanna be the bearer of bad news, but if anyone needs a sign of climate change, this shit will only happen more as the planet warms.

8 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 39

Better keep that car running then so we at least have warm water to bathe in

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry, but that's not necessarily true. Climate change is real, it's reinforced by human activity, but that doesn't necessarily mean 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

that the climate is going to churn out natural disasters more often. It could, but that's not something we can fully understand yet. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I thought it was pretty widely accepted that it’s a cause of increasing frequency & severity of extreme weather events. Happy to learn more.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Its widely accepted climate change is real. From there, specifics get a bit less clear cut and much harder to prove.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is a severe hurricane in the gulf every decade. Katrina was almost 10 years ago.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Um... it's been 142 months since the last one of these. If Hurricanes are a sure sign of AGW, is the absence of them counter-evidence?

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 10

142 months since the last 1-in-500-year storm? Sounds like a warning to me...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yep. A single weather event does not a climate trend make; however, more extreme weather events are a predicted symptom.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

It is unusual that the winds that should carry the storm inland are not present. Hard to chalk it up to climate change without more study.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a good thing we can look at more than 1 point of data and see trends.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Your comment is way under appreciated

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rereading-- where's your 142 months number coming from?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Courage and peace from France

8 years ago | Likes 156 Dislikes 7

Actually courage and peace are last things i'd expect coming from france (it's meant only as a joke, too good not to use)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Yeah France! America's original freedom buddy.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Well... OP would have use for some sort of gondola right now, I guess. Good luck @OP!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They're expensive af, about 80€ for half an hour so hope that rain stuff goes away soon huh.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think the gondola taxis are willing to come to Houston. It's a bit of a sail.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First I thought you were suggesting OP take a vacation to Venice but then I got the joke. Fucking right up my alley type of humour +1

I'm so annoyed I didn't think of this. Goddamn it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're in sugar Land and they just issued mandatory evac for us because of the releases. I'm packing up my family and leaving at first light.

8 years ago | Likes 598 Dislikes 3

Where are y'all going?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sugar Land is pretty far south. Be safe, amigo.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

We have friends on Sugar land. Stay safe!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

let us know how you are doing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Oh shit. I've got multiple family members in Sugar Land.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Suger Land? Is that a real place?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

road closures listed here https://www.facebook.com/fbcoem/

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As an update, we left at 6a and safely made it to the Austin area after 5 hours... usually a 3 hour drive. All members of the family ... 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Safe and accounted for. Thank you all for the well wishes.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

@Soopermanz hwy 6 from 59 is clear to at least Bissonett. My friend did that and I live in the area too.

8 years ago | Likes 290 Dislikes 1

Galleria is luckily only on voluntary evacuation so far

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We had neighbors meeting up at 7.30 with boats but we are in Katy. Check your neighborhood fb, nextdoor app, etc to see if you have the same

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

They have the boats coming out from all over. Get in contact with the fire marshal and let them know you need and evac out.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You too, godspeed

8 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 2

Would you like to donate some water to California it would be greatly appreciated.

While you are probably going to be fine, I'd suggest having a ladder up to the roof handy, [...]

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

as well as some brightly colored cloth and/or candles/flares to signal for help with, just in case water rises above expected heights.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did they think this was going to hit you this hard? Did you think about evacuating?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Whether they did or not remember they're all humans.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I didn't say he deserved to drown if he stayed against advice. I'm just curious about it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know you didn't. But there will always be people who take this as an excuse to pile on. Your comment was a good spot to remind. Cheers

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, it wasn't supposed to hit this hard. Mayor said not to evacuate.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

they warned everyone and people still stayed!!!!!!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

Good luck evacuating 8 million people in a few hours. Trust me, it's not a good idea.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

No, in the time before the storm when they warned it was going to be insane, you could leave whenever you want!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

the news reported it was going to be BAD days before leading up to the storm. not really 8M people heading out of town in an hr.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Two days before they were predicting it might make Cat 1 status. Maybe. No one leaves for a Cat 1.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some areas were told not to evac. Think OP is in one of those:

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

See "7:15 PM" note: "The mayor also defended his decision not to order an evacuation."

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thanks for these details. that really sucks :(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You... you live in a place called... Sugar land? ._.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Yea, it's probably gonna melt with all the flooding...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I stayed in a hotel there once. They had sugar scrub in the bathroom to wash your hands.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Named after Imperial Sugar. There was a factory here. I live in Sugar Land. Thankfully in an area not under mandatory or voluntary evac.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Also of interest: The Imperial Sugar plant is where the sugar for "10-2" Dr. Pepper comes from. Source: Took tours of plant when I was a kid
