I had to prune back a photinia bush and thought it would be interesting to see how suitable it is to carving.

I only seasoned it for about 6 weeks so it was still fairly green. It was a bit dense but very smooth and hardly any splintering.

The ball at the top I had carved from bloodwood (at least I think it was bloodwood, it came in a box of various exotic cutoffs). I put it there on a whim, drilling a hole into the ball and carving the top of the branch into a narrow peg. It didn't end up being as flush as I'd hoped.

Looked like a match from the thumbnail.
