Made me thirsty!

Could have saved a ton of time and just took a picture.

I love how the artist had to intentionally texture parts of it to show flaws

A water painting oil painting.

Hang it on a wall and get asked q thousand times "why do you have a pic of a glass of water?" Because it looks too real. ?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Then it was a success. That's one of the reasons people create and collect hyperrealistic art.

Gorgeous

so she set a glass of water on an oil paining and took a picture of it?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But... why? Is it just a practice piece? Do people actually buy photorealistic paintings of glasses of water? Who are these people?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

...fire in the sky.

Well shit, sometimes you see a thing that makes you think what the hell am I doing with my life

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

A glass of water can make you question it all.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it half full or half empty though?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i wish it had a little less water so i could say it looked about 5/7.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dont get it

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Look a glass of water which could have been a photo. I’m impressed. This is art.

That is amazing, I can't even begin to understand how paintings like this are made

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

With paint and patience?

Possibly the strongest silent American accent I have ever (not) heard.

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I think it's the way she opens her mouth for the Y and how it matches the O in god... that's just my gander...

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oh myeeee gaaaaaaawd

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As an American, I always forget people can see my accent as much as I can see a British or Australian accent :) thanks for the reminder

That's a glass a water. I don't see any oil or canvas.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you look really close you can see some of the sideways brushstrokes and texturing on the right edge of the glass

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Rookie mistake on part of the artist

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can kinda see the brush strokes on the bottom of the glass, but still hard to believe

It looks like a photograph of literally a glass of water sitting on top of an oil on canvas painting.

Found a larger version (then I came back here & it turns out @Vetinari beat me to it) - you have to look closely, but it really is all paint

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Vetinari is ALWAYS a step ahead. That's how you gotta be to run Ankh-Morpork.

alright, serious question, why go to all the trouble to paint something so lifelike when you could just take a photo of it in mere seconds?

7 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 5

My guess is that a photo doesn't capture the nuances that she wished to express. I'll be damned if I can distinguish those nuances though.

"Fuck all yall, I kick ass!"

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yeah but you can't say I PAINTED THAT!! on a photo. This shows off ability.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because you want to prove that you can. Or just to see how far your powers have grown.

It’s relaxing. Smoke a joint and grab my acrylics. That’s my kinda Saturday night!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It requires high skill.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well as a painter you might just enjoy the challenge. Why spend hundreds of hours playing video games? Oddly enough both can make you money.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Art isn't always practical though it does have a practical context. If someone is willing to pay $$$ for this b/c of the technique, why not?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Demonstration of skill.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, why go for a walk or jog or run when you can just drive places? It's all about the journey/enjoyment of the process

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I like your answer to the question.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, for one thing you can make pretty good money selling hyperrealistic artwork. If you can, it's more like "why wouldn't you"?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

but you could take a photo! and it'd be the same thing! right? but 1000x easier to make>?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, you could take a photo. But I guarantee they would not sell as well as a realistic painting or prints of a realistic painting. 1/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You asked. I'm seriously answering the question. There is a real and substantial market for hyperrealism in the art world. You can spend 2/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

all day arguing about whether a photo would achieve the same thing, but a photo is missing the element which makes hyperrealistic art 3/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I personally do not aim for realism or perfection because it's exceedingly difficult to capture accurately; I would just botch it up.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On the other hand I like to add impossible elements to paintings and a better realist portrayal would make them stand out in a different way

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is photorealism. Realism is like the old masters painted. You would never mistake a Bouguereau for a photo. IMO a paint shouldn’t look

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

look exactly like a photo. It’s missing the soul of a real painting and a lot of photorealism is created w/cheat tools like a projector.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks, you're right about the distinction. Unfortunately comments are so short, so I wanted to keep my point equally short.
