They went to stay with a neighbor one bad night, neighbor thought they were helping...

You wonder why more women dont go to shelters? this is why...

the lesser of two evils is.... the devil.

we offered them our basement apartment.

She's been ready for this, just needed help with that first step.

No expectatons asked. Just heal, and be respectful.

A sacrifice was made, but I can afford it. We can afford this easily

When I was a kid, we spent a good amount of time homeless. House hopping, sleeping in burnt down houses, squatting in places with no electric or heat or water. No one bothered to check on us. No one bothered to see what was going on. No one bothered to find out why we were wearing the same clothes day in & day out even when they smelled like smoke & dirt. Good on you for making life bearable for someone who was in a bad way & changing their life. I wish I had someone like you growing up.

Outstanding OP, that's a shitty position to recover from without help.

Because heroes DO. Not "that's what heroes do" heroes just DO. They see something wrong and they act.
Nice job @op!

That’s an old Chabad story about why God loves atheists. Yes. Chabad. “Ultraorthodox” Jews.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The story OP wrote about atheists, at the bottom of the quote, is actually an old Chabad story that someone went and changed to talk about Christians.

I also wanted to point out that it came from a deeply religious group of Jews, so it isn’t quite the slam on religion as some might interpret it to be.

As a social worker, you’re an OG. Glad mom was able to take the steps and you weren’t pulled into a hard case, as well. Sometimes it’s as simple as a horrible abuser. Sometimes there’s codependency and personality disorder in mom. In those cases, well there’s a reason we move really slowly.

#18 I did this with a friend a few weeks ago. Had issues with taxes abd needed to pay around $4000, which they didn't have. I'm sitting on a decent chunk of change waiting for this housing market to get better, so I loaned them the money with no interest and pay as you can (which, honestly, if they can't pay me back that's fine)

Fuck yeah for doing this. Nice one @op. I have mad respect to people sharing and supporting others in need. Humanity at its best. Also, I hope the kid grows up knowing not all people are like that ex. There are plenty of good apples too.

2 years ago | Likes 171 Dislikes 3

I hope so. I think we caught it in time. Therapy will be needed eventually but so far we're good, and thats their call really.

2 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Maybe therapy sooner isn’t a bad idea too to help with the transition. If that’s a viable option, of course. Either way, take care of yourself and I wish you all the best.

Breaking that cycle for the kid is a big fuckin deal

I know someone who tried this...the abuser made their life a hell. They got restraining orders...didn't stop him. Lots happened but was never proven. In the end the guy who was trying to help the women gotthreatened one day outside his work...the abuser pushed him...fight...he beat the abuser so bad he is disabled...good guy got10 months in jail and a record out of it. Outside the court he told her it was worth everyday.

Same concern here. Same sort of tactics.
So far our defense is secrecy, and the stupidly randomness of this that its untracable.

Make sure the kid's school is informed that they don't give out any information to him.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Was it smart to post about it online then? Creeps stalk social media and are strangely good at figuring out the loose pieces. Should have used a burner account and nothing that can be traced to you.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. I scrubbed the post of any identifiable information. There are no loose pieces. Only facts you can mine is that I am somewhere in america, and that I have a family.
I wish them good luck.

my mother did stuff like this my whole life(with my father supporting her efforts, but never choosing anyone). We always had strangers living with us, and as a kid, it was a lot of mixed feelings when some random adult is parenting you, but now they are all aunts and uncles and i have a huge extended family i am grateful for.
I have tried to "pass it on" and help others much the same way, but never had good results. I never had my mothers' sense for these things. she was a rare person.

2 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

That's why the "If you are able to help but don't, you are complicit" thing doesn't sit quite right with me (and I realize OP only posed it as a question). Not everyone is equipped to tell who is ready for help and who will make you regret trying. You can claim that those who aren't equipped to tell the difference are not one of those who fit the "able to help" category, but I'm not sure most people think of that when they say it.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I can see that. That's me trying to help ex-cons and they go back to drugs, start stealing, then when I am forced to evict them they break in. Starts with a 'I don't care you're an ex-con, I judge people by what they do' and ends 'yeah, I shouldn't have tried to help an ex-con' which just diminishes the other ex-cons that are trying to better themselves.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Yes, sometime people aren't ready to be helped. Mom in the story just needed a safe space and a push to cut ties, but was ready to put in the work herself. Not everyone does that. Some want others to work out their problems for them and will fall back into the same habits as soon as you try and let them walk on their own, and it's exhausting to try to help these people.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

(I don't want to diminish what OP did for them. I just wanted to express that helping others needs some cooperation of the people you are helping)

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Absolutely this, and "sometimes people aren't ready to be helped" is an excellent way to put it. You cannot help someone, no matter how hard you try, if they're not willing to *be* helped; it's not fair to you to destroy yourself in trying

I've found in my personal experience the Christians were never the ones to reach out but the morningstars used to catch me before I ever even realised I was falling.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sounds like they are on track to gather enough strength to afford their own roof in a while. And hopefully, in time, find they are in a place they can pay it forward.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

From a Christian to you Morningstars, right on indeed. Be excellent to eachother. While I may feel kindness to be a commandment, it should be given without the need for any reward. It's just that some people are... well... assholes that need to be told.

2 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 5

Word, yo. Christians are more often then not, awesome. But there are those few that need an angry nun with a ruler

2 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

I have always looked at religion like a gun. You can use that gun for good, go hunting, feed families, defend those that can't defend themselves, and so on. But that is assuming it's in the hands of someone thats already a good person. If they are not, you have a lot of problems. This is why they need regulation.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Hey, fun fact - those people who need that nun? The drumpf supporters, the people who protest dead kids' funerals, the people who spew hatred and assault innocent people and beat poor kids who just happen to be trans to death, you know those people?

They aren't christian.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Forgive my ignorance, what is a morningstar?

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

From Lucifer Morningstar, aka Satan. Being a Morningstar would presumably mean to be in Satan's family. In this case, I suspect they are saying that they are non-religious / atheist. Many fundies would likely call them evil and hellbound. They may not be overly fond of religions, but chose to do the right thing because it's the right thing, not because some god told them to do it.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Morningstar?

They got the basement apartment, not the attic. So, “may they thrive under your floor”, perhaps?

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

My nerd cave/office got the attic. We're all under one roof.
its kinda like a split level house, but not really.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

You are a best human. Wtf happened at the women’s shelter and how does that get fixed?

2 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 1

Creeps hang out out around women's shelters hoping to prey on vulnerable people. Many get followed and assaulted when they leave. Being homeless is incredibly dangerous for women and shelters are not the safe space you'd assume.

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

I suppose so. My limited exposure to shelters was for battered women. They worked to make the women unavailable to their abuser or anyone.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

[insert shocked pinkachu]
so many red flags.
There was another tennant (mom was told there wasnt one) who was there fleeing sex trafficking who mom could tell was actually "dressed to recruit".

A women's shelter is full of desperate, highly vulnerable women with no options.

I have no idea how to fix it. Voting more money to regulatory agencies? Federal inestigstion agencies?

2 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 2

How does one dress to recruit? I’m pretty sure I know.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

More options for and better funded women's shelters. Then we can work on abuse shelters so men fleeing abuse can get the same help.

2 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Yeah this is desperately needed for men too, but it's hard enough to even talk about in the first place
