There is a better shot of him in a meeting of the Emperors inner circle.

He's Darth Plagueis.

I thought that was a woman. Also they never explain Palpatine was very xenophobic yet his closest advisor in prequels was that blue alien

I thought that was a woman as well.

Like Hitler or Trump, he united his people with a common hated enemy. Doesn't mean he as an ACTUAL xenophobe.

I thought the lore of the Sith said there could only be one master and one student at any time. Would Darth Insidious have tolerated another

Well there were three during the clone wars what with Maul being alive and all.

Sidious, not Insidious. Also, the succession is usually that the new student kills the old student/master. Maybe Vader was just lazy.

But I don't think this guy was ever Sidious's student. Are they saying that Sidious was his student? And if so, Sidious has several students

Also, there are a few instances in the expanded universe where that whole "one master, one student" thing really doesn't pan out.

I would expect that Sidious would have been Snoke's student, yes. I don't think Darth Maul was supposed to be sith, just an assassin.

Funny, because the first movie basically said Darth Maul was a Sith. Oh, well, that's me bringing logic into a fantasy universe.

At least from what I've read before, he started as an assassin for the Sith, but he was too strong with the force or what have you.
