One of the mentors at my firefighting school is a guy who got on service at 39. He couldn't be happier with his life and it shows.
kaospickle
Started myself last year at 39! We fucking got this!

NICE!! As a fellow 40-year-old, it's a good time for a change of pace. (40's the new 29 right?)
afatrollofmyown
I'm certainly hoping 40 is the new 29.... or else I'm boned.
ijiwaru5150
You got this OP. I just finished paramedic training Sept 2020 at age 60. Got hired by an ambulance company last month, finish training this
HelpfulCorn
I would love that job but the pay is such crap. Unless you are not in the us.
Sadly yes in US. Fortunately not trying to buy a house or raise a family.
khakzoy
You can always switch, never too old and the time is always now! Good choice and good luck!
Smackthebucky
Consider your age your XP. That is awesome!!!
Megameatloaf
Good stuff OP!!! I'm a 31yr old ex aircraft sheet metal worker currently studying IT-networking. It's never to late to make the change!
JustStopTalking
55 and going for my Realtor license. It will give me an income when I retire my truck driving job.
PhDisKillingMe
Yes! You only get older anyway. Do what you want!!
Nikolai5
Nice, where I work we recently hired a new programmer. He's in his 50s and his previous job was as a builder. Never too late, mate.
painkiller1968
You look young for 40.
tmitna
Did the same but with medicine. No regrets.
sociallyawkwardintrovertthoughts
I will have finished my Masters 4 mo after I turn 40. Go you!
MaybeAcat
I’m 40 this year and currently in school also. I’m glad I’m not alone.
soundwave790
Get some!! I got out of the military at 39, starting an HVAC apprenticeship next month at 41.
CeruleanSky1988
How do you get started? Asking because I'm going through the same at the age of 33 and I feel completely fucking lost
I went back to what made me the happiest. I worked at a bike shop in highschool. Going back to wrenching on bikes.
BrobiwanKenobro
After 10 years of not being confident enough, im getting NASM certified this summer. Or gonna try... good luck my friend. (30yo m)
shoeshopaholic
This thread has given me hope that my 41 year old ass can get out of this rut!
SunofAbyss
I started my current career at age 43.
This really brings me hope. Turn 40 this year, left service industry but good and don't really know where I'm going.
I'm doing what I wanted to do as a little kid. My wife is no longer working, we're doing well. What do you want be when you grow up?
wrenchhead
I’ll be starting Voc Rehab (going back to school for my Associates in video game design/3D Art) in August at 44. Good luck to us both!
Thorax48
Designer with associates degree here. If you can get a bachelors. 90% jobs I’ve been looking at all ask for one.

RobBobertyYT
Good luck! 44 as well and done some small video game stuff on my own. Been considering going back to school for a while for it.

Started a new apprenticeship at 40. Qualified goldsmith now. You got this
Omgur14
Amazing, congratulations! May I know how long it took?
4 years of earning not enough to live on. Totally worth it!
Sounds really brave of you to do, and yes it paid off. Well done!
kendrickmeadows1
After nearly 20 years in IT I'm ready to take a vocational job in HVAC or building security. It pays almost double and is super easy to do.
Species8472UpInThisB1tch
Tell me again about how super easy it is after you replace the HVAC unit and build new manifolds for a hotel.
ImNotStalkingYouBTWYoureOutOfMilk
Or how easy physical rehab is cause some group nearly killed you because you wouldn't let them in.
spookycollins
I'm looking down the barrel at 40 myself and wishing I had the courage to change careers - well done @OP
DamagedDingo
I’m just starting those memory palace things at 40
AtlantisTheLostEmpire
Memory palace?

I turn 40 soon. Still don't know what I want to do when I grow up.
drivinmekrazy
I spent much of my adult life in an injection molding factory making mostly car parts. At 50 I was done! Now I drive a CMV and I LOVE IT.
Commercial Motor Vehicle✌️
Like an interstate truck?
JohnWickdidnothingwrong
Dude if it's *at all* possible, do it. The mental health benefits of working a job that doesn't erode your soul are impossible to overstate.
I did it at 45 and it's the second-best decision I've ever made.
I'll bite, what's the first?
Vasectomy.
I thought it was gonna be food related, but that's still good.
Ah nice, congrats. May I know what the new role/industry is now and what you love most about it?
berserk
I left the army at 40, and started my own business, doing what I did in the army. It wasn't a great success, but I liked it. 1/2
2/2 Get everything done before 50 though, because then you go through change of life, and your mind starts to go.
If you don't mind may I ask what business do you have and what's the first step? I'm hoping to do something similar.
I was a dental technician; made false teeth, crowns, bridges. I had completed 19 years in the army when an opportunity to take over 1/2
2/2 a laboratory in a nearby town. Managed to get a year's leave, so I had a fallback if it didn't work out. Never looked back.
Nice, well done. I imagine buying the lab took capital, or was it a bank loan? Do you have to be an artist to make those things well?
I DEMAND YOU CHANGE YOUR CAREER RIGHT NOW SPOOKY COLLINS!
Give him the ol brad pitt fight club special
I wish it were that easy, I really do - but my changing careers isn't that simple when you run your own business - which is hilarious
Since I'm a communist and have absolutely zero interest in entrepreneurship or anything business like
SpencerAssiff
Seems like the easiest. Just sell it and use the cash to fund your training.
DontLookAtMeInThatToneOfVoicee
Our training, comrade.
May I know what type of business? I thought that would offer the most flexibility if you hired help
