I'm in turmoil over this. I want to upvote this, but it's at 1337 points and an upvote would ruin that.

Literally just landed in Florida. I was curious if we were going to go thru it or not. Those hurricane winds got us here a half hr early

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Surprisingly, its much safer to fly through a hurricane than a severe thunderstorm. The wind patterns are predictable in a hurricane.

Those AF reservists have to be a little crazy to do that. But thank god they do. It is one of the reasons forecasts are much better now.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is that the guys that use a civilian A-10?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Some folks in Guthrie Oklahoma use a civilian modified A-10 Thunderbolt for tornado research.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, the Hurricane Hunters use modified C-130s . I used to work with them as an Air Force Weather Forecaster.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

NOAA has a G5 and a P3 Orion they use as well over at MacDill.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah cool. =)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The idea of a Warthog flying into the eye of a hurricane is amusing and terrifying at the same time. What chance does a hurricane have?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

TBH a stock A-10 would be decimated by a typical hurricane.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I remember seeing a post on it here a couple years back. There were 2 of them and they were modified for the job.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the key phrase here is "modified". Which is kinda why I said a *stock* a-10 would go down.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is that second plane that appears to be heading straight for it also a storm chaser then you reckon?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the comment I came here for.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I try to never upvote a Yolo. But when I do... It's a sweet ass comment

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: due to lateral wind direction instead of vertical drafts, it's easier to fly through a hurricane than a normal thunderstorm

8 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

Also he's in the eye.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: He is probably flying above the hurricane.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

No shit there I was. Flight from DEN to RAP. Six hrs on the tarmak waiting to be deiced. Captain comes on, "Everyone else has turned back...

8 years ago | Likes 295 Dislikes 2

Tarmac. Built in the style of MacAdam with the Tar binder introduced by Hooley. Tarred MacAdam-tarmac.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Since they usually spell it without the capital "A" in "macadamized", I always pronounced it like "macadamia nut"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That makes sense.

I googled this because I don't trust ppl, but you are 100% correct Sir.

Probably the storm chaser or hurricane hunter plane. Shows up on ATC, because it's... part of air traffic. Even if no other plane is near.

8 years ago | Likes 603 Dislikes 4

Hurricane hunter plane sounds like a call of duty killstreak

Lockheed WC-130

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Not P-3s anymore?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

NOAA still uses them. Air force recon doesn't.

Not for some time now.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What is possible low level invest?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's not something that I know.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and don't they typically fly above the storm? then, like, they dip down into the eye if that's where they are going.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Nope!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Straight through the middle, baby.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Doesn't that pose a massive risk

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah but sometimes you need to take risks to make sure that other people don't get hurt.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No modern Hurricane Hunter has been lost but Hugo tried damn hard. Crazy powerful up/downdrafts. There have been close calls for sure

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'm surprised a plane is capable of lifting those steel balls.

8 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 2

Really not that bad. They can fly over the hurricane then dip in the center where wind is minimal

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

However they routinely are at a flight level between 5,000 to 15,000 feet, and right in the strongest winds. You can track their live...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I hope they stay live.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dropsonde readings, realtime precip and temperature rates as they conduct their recon. Go to Tropicaltidbits .com and recon tab.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure planes fly over and are essentially unaffected by the hurricane

8 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 23

Dude, the hurricane goes up all the way. You need a space ship to fly over.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Do you fly over the tops of hurricanes? NO! The tops of a big hurricane can be over 50,000 ft high. Source: Hurricane Hunters Association

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure you are wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

Not wrong. It is safer for a plane to fly through a hurricane or tornado, than a thunderstorm IF there were no debris.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Variable air pressure and turbulence poses a greater risk than consistent cyclone winds. Again...not including hail or debris

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's possible, my statement was based off of zero research on the subject

8 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 3

Not in an *AIR*plane.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Basically, hurricanes are large unidirectional winds, which is easy to navigate for pilots.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I like your honesty
