Yeah, it's really annoying when the bots and click farms take over the comment section these days. You'll get twenty commenters saying the exact same thing. That didn't happen 10 years ago
I mean, it's non of my business what kind of table other people like - but if I were making this for myself, while planning it, I would already say: "That's not worth it." and made something else.
Exactly! Because we all know there are only two options for making a table: Wasting a lot of wood or a cement block. It's also well known that your can't make art without wasting a lot of wood! Actually this table is the only thing in the world that can be considered art! If you don't like that exact table, you're basically saying: "Don't make art!".
In the actual video I think he puts a piece of glass over the hole, if not the whole tabletop. This condensed version also leaves out the cool light he put inside the hole.
"This condensed version leaves out the cool light he puts in the hole" I think you can see where I got confused, because it does in fact show the cool light. The "finished product" photos at the end are quite lacking, I would agree.
If you are patient and willing to look for used bargains, you can probably find everything for under 5,000. Lotta people who downsized or moved are sitting on big stacks of tools that they unload all at once for cheap to make room.
To be clear, there's nothing "fancy" going on here. Everything being used is part and parcel for any woodworking shop. We're talking a lathe, a table saw, a bandsaw, a planer, a sander, clamps, some hand tools... All of those big machines are built to last and you can find super good deals on old units.
The art organization my mom volunteers for was setting up a wood shop and someone donated a massive lathe. I can't remember what the max diameter for the normal chuck and live center area is, but there is also a chuck on the opposite side with no opposing center and they said they can make 48" pieces on that.
Sure, but I reckon you could get a competent hobbyist wood shop kitted out for as little as $5,000. Esp. since it's woodworking, you don't need the tightest, most accurate gear in the world, so you could easily score a lathe for a few hundred bucks. Hell, getting the thing over to your workshop might end up costing more than the lathe itself if you were to ship it. Same thing with all the other big machines. As long as you're sticking with wood, you can make do with a lot of "lower-grade" gear.
That's true. Having a workshop in and of itself can be a big ask and depending on where you are, just running all the machines can rack up a bit of a bill, but the gear itself I don't feel requires an investment of $200,000 like the original commenter implied :)

What happened to showing the finished product at the start of a video? Imgur used to suck slightly less....

And the first glass of beverage gets spilled will put out the light.

I needed no reminder that I’m lazy and unproductive but thanks anyway.
MagnorCriol
This guy's woodworking stuff is beyond impressive. Oliver Gomis, look him up on YouTube. The videos are entertaining as well as being neat showcases.

Genuine rollercoaster-ride of amazement, horror, astonishment, more horror, and whelm.

This video moves fast but I swear I saw an MRI machine at one point! Nice work.

My wormhole just got tensored

Oliver Gomis is by far the most creative woodworker I've ever seen
ibuycrap
That only took a few minutes to make.
zortroz
Nice.
Bundalicious
Here, you can make this beautiful wood project for cheap at home. Wood is crazy expensive and you must have a shop and $20,000 worth of tools.
Dakemesh
Wow. Lotta hate on this for some reason. I don't think anyone implied it's a "do-it-yourself" project.
Anyway, I really dig it - though I'd probably put a piece of glass on the top to protect the wood as much as cover the hole.

These toolgifs videos are getting longer every day
BuckDitkis
That's a lot of work for a useless table. Looks cool though
xo66nt
cool thing that i would never buy.
lonelyrangerofthedreams
Ah, yes, the typical do it yourself video with 80k $ tools, infinite wood, space and time.
I will try it at home.

Wood engineering. Great technique

Holy crap that is a lot of work (and a lot of wasted wood too).

Well, thankfully, it grows on trees

Ikr, why make art when you could use a cement cube for table. >:3

Whoa, look at mister fancy pants with a cement cube. I was thinking of an overturned milk crate.

Old bricks.

Am I missing something or is everything you set on this table just going to end up in that hole?
lordsupafly
... as intended?

Only once its orbit decays.
stronomer
It's a wormhole, consisting of a black hole. What else should happen to anything you set onto the table?

The light is in this one
HandsomePenguin
Did you miss the part of the video where they show him putting the cool light into the hole?

I saw that part, I was talking about when the table was finished and he shows off what it looks like inside: https://youtu.be/5XlTkGEO564?t=1776

Step one, own about $200,000 worth of fancy tools.
MrChocodemon
Step two, get more glue than you have wood

Also a lot of it could be done with just hard tools if you're masochistic enough.
