This is a sexy helicopter.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Airwolf... Theme tune playing in my head

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ever since I was a kid, I thought that was the coolest heli. Wish they had found a use for it in service

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

thats not airwolf:P

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's just an Akula from GTA5.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Anybody remember that chopper sim Comanche? Man that was the shit.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah, brings me back to the good ol days in Mercenaries 1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Command and conquer generals anyone?

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Still remember sneaking up until tanks in the Nova Logic pc game, in all its voxel glory.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Airwolf? That’s clearly Blue Thunder you goddamn heathens.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Nah, Blue Thunder was far boxier, this is halfway between the two, so it's gotta be their love child

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All those old 90's games made it seem like a hell of a lot more than just 5 were ever produced.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Same with jackhammer.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is such a beautiful aircraft & it's a shame that the program had to be cancelled. It'd be nice to see civilian versions w/ same looks.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And all that could have been.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Rocket pods are now available sir".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It made for some fun video games! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comanche_(video_game_series)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Goldeneye.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Nah that was the Tiger Heli

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Is that what crashed during the raid on Osama?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No. What crashed was a prototype stealth conversion of a UH-60 Black Hawk.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh hey a debadged Akula

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

No.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Nah thats just Arma 3 ;D

8 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 4

Blackfoot for life.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love me some AH-99.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I see what ya did there ;)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is the the F-52?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

That's so stupid. He obviously meant B52's. Norway needs strategic bombers!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Command and Conquer Generals?

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

YESSSS. I love the one USA mission where you have to protect retreating forces with a squadron of Comanches.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I felt like such a badass during that one.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I miss playing this. I have an old C&C Decade CD I bought years ago with this and all earlier C&C games on it. Alas, its damaged, can't 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

play Generals at all and I would honestly consider re-buying if it was available on Steam, etc.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I pirated and modded it a while ago. Also check out "generals gentlemen" on youtube for very entertaining casts.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cool, I used to play a lot of RTS games back the day but sadly their not as commonly found anymore. I found a $6 link for the Ultimate 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Collection of Command and Conquer but it seems a little too good to be true. I have the "Decade" with everything but the recent TW games.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Trying to make rotors stealthy must be fun.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a biologist, they probably copy owlwings.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wasn't talking about acoustics. Not sure owl wings are optimized for low radar cross section. ;)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then they should probably copy some moths with high predator pressure from bats.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So they rebooted Airwolf?

8 years ago | Likes 150 Dislikes 3

Blue Thunder, Mr. President.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is actualy my ringtone

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Still love that show. I used to stay up late as a kid and watch it with my pop.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Da didly da, didly da, didly da da du da da- da da-da daaaa

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

I hate to admit I actually tried singing that. Take my up vote.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

*tck tck* catch you later.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Designed before Airwolf

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fuck! Now I have the theme stuck in my head!

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not that it's a bad thing, either...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Me too. Damn.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I too am old enough to remember this. How do you do, fellow strings?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Does anyone remember the Comanche games? With Voxel gaphics?

8 years ago | Likes 174 Dislikes 2

isn't that the one where one of the missions was being totally surrounded by enemies and having unlimited ammo?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yes. I've still got a "bundle" with Comanche II, Armored Fist II, and F-22 Lightning. They don't run on modern PC's but I've got them.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You may be able to run them using Dosbox

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*Amazing* games. Some arse-clenching moments trying not to be spotted by SAM sites.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And the box was awesome too!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep!!! Loved it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I do! Played those when I was a kid.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Meeeeemoriiiiieees

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes so awesome, just don't go back and play them now it will ruin the memory

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes and still has a setup for it (and Mechwarior Mercenaries) old P-133 16MB Ram, Saitek x-36 and pedals.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I still have them laying around somewhere on disks that do not fit into any computer I have. :3

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I still have a bunch of ms-dos games but I haven't bothered to put a CD drive on my pc yet..

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

one of my first computer games - Comanche Gold.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

LOVED those games

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I thought I was the only one

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Loved that game. Flying through the trenches.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Lhx attack chopper

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

probably my 'gateway' to flight sims, my brother's copy of course. Then he lent it to someone and that person lost it, sad. even was 'gold'

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep played the heck out of that.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

The original game was so ahead of it's time. In order to make it run fast enough, they wrote the engine in assembler!!!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hell yes, made by Novalogic, they also made Delta force series. Good times.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah. Totally forgot about that one. Was just awesome.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ever play Enemy Engaged Comanche vs Hokum? That was the evolution of those old games. Really great game, before things got ultra realistic

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope. Will look it up

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wonder if the pilot plays the cello?

8 years ago | Likes 384 Dislikes 4

A Stradivarius at that.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The theme is now playing in my head

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

And lives in a cabin with a dog named Tet.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That old Bell 222 looked just as good as this Comanche.

Jan Michael Vincent you magnificent motherfucker.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I can already see it lifting out the volcano, awesome ref.

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

It took the volcano to tip me off. Awesome ref. to the ref.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

My friend gets it but can someone explain it to me?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Air Wolf i believe. Same vintage as Night Rider and the A Team. Golden age of pop corn TV.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Same era, it was a team of similar series following a pattern: this, Blue Thunder and Street Hawk

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Stockhausen is on the Sgt Pepper because art.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sucks that they didn't had interest in putting this to good use.

8 years ago | Likes 132 Dislikes 7

Uh... we got Osama... a decade late and in a different country, but we got him. I'm willing to bet these were on mission.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not cost effective enough, mission not clearly defined, didn't fulfill a role that wasn't already being fulfilled effectively.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It seems to me the stealth bits probably found their way into the Stealth Blackhawk. https://theaviationist.com/category/stealth-black-hawk/

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Seems to me these probably accompanied and covered the Stealth Blackhawks on missions

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree, but $$$.

8 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

But... F35.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Yeah I know... But the f35s big thing isn't even stealth. It's the sensor fusion.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

The reason we chose the F22 program over the YF23 (statistically superior) was cost. It's mind boggling how dysfunctional money makes things

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They chose drones instead...

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 2

Seems like a better investment tbh

8 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

I think so..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lamer, but better investment. Heck, insurgents were recently able to cripple a russian airbase in syria with consumer drones.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thats as cool as it is terrifying

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why only 5? Were they rubbish or too expensive for the benefit?

8 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 3

costs overran by miles and they realised the Apache could do what they wanted of the Commanche.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Terrible instance of design by committee. Super unrealistic requirements, like being able to fly across oceans. Made costs enormous.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

“Too expensive for the benefit”? Do you know anything about the US military??

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Stealth wouldn't prevent it from being shot down by an RPG just like any other helicopter.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

UAVs and army needed money for other stuff, plus order numbers went down, rocketing unit price. iirc.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Their survivability/cost was eclipsed by UCAV and loitering weapon systems. The budget was spent on upgrading existing systems.

8 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 3

They were a light attack/scout helicopter that cost as much as a fighter plane.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The GAO reported it had "serious doubts" about the program, that the it would "consume almost 2/3 of Aviation budget by Fiscal 2008."

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah so ArmA 3 was realistic?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No clue. I'm talking about real explosions and blood.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is getting fucked up.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What does this mean in dumb people terms?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

@skippedover has it right. Another way to put it is that it was a better job for robots, and we invented the robots.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Translation: Unmanned combat aircraft vehicles (UCAV) and suicide/kamikaze unmanned aircraft drones (loitering weapon systems) 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

were cheaper and more effective in combat. The money was used elsewhere. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

It's yet another program that took so long that many systems were outdated by the time they were getting ready for production.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

So it would have cost many additional billions to not only produce it but to upgrade all of the systems. Defense Contractor 101.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Death Spiral!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not to say that the entire project was a loss, a lot of the technologies ended up on AH-64 revisions and other projects.

8 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 1

Though, I recall the Comanche was intended to operate in a tandem-role with the Apache, acting as a forward observer and support unit.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

It was a light multirole attack helicopter by design. It was Boeing/Sikorsky's winning bid for the joint LHX [light helicopter experiment].

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And one of its roles was to coordinate with Apaches, IIRC; provide targeting data for the heavier armed Apache to wreck shit better.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It doesn't need to be manned to do that anymore. Any support role it could have provided is covered by modern UCAV

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The low altitude/low observable aspects are really better served by UAV. There's no reason for a single seater light attack heli anymore

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Whilst that is true, that was still one of the objectives they wanted the Comanche to fulfil.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And I'm sure the experience they gained researching/adapting those systems to the Comanche were invaluable in later research.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The modified blackhawks used in the raid on Bin Laden's compound in Pakistan probably used some of the comanche's stealth tech.

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 4

"bin laden"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why fast rope in when you can just spike the bird into your objective?!

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

...Ground effect, lol

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They survived, didn't they?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Maybe

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Blackhawks falling from the heavens... so stealthy

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I don't get the reference

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They crashed one and had to blow it up to prevent the wreckage from falling into the wrong hands. Not very stealthy.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

That's standard operating procedure. These were experimental aircraft on a one-off mission.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was pretty stealthy until they clipped the tail on the wall and crashed!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also they only cared about getting IN without detection. Which they did.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Poor cost-efficiency i imagine

Most of the time. Usually just buy a couple of prototypes to see what theyre worth but leave it at that. Then again the UK did order about

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

12 daring class destroyers but could only afford to make something like 7

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More times than you'd think. Many great projects got either shelved or so few were made they essentially became tech demonstrators.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or they gave a handful to the marines to see if usefulness outweighed cost IE Ospreys.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Marines: We'll take the shit that doesn't work and use it. Army: we've got tons of stuff to buy, too expensive. Navy: Boats. Airforce: 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

doesn't regularly fly helicopters and when they do they don't need stealth. Coast guard: Can't afford it, doesn't need it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
