If John Q. Public has $5000 invested in the stock market, suddenly the "logic" of statements like his made above will start swaying a whole lot more people.
Also the stock market trends up over time by default. If he hadn't done anything to affect it at all, it would've broken 50k sooner and would currently be higher (my speculation)
It's the only "good" thing going up. Disregard the US dollar has dropped by more than the stock market has gone up so investments sold now buy less overseas than they did last year.
