Some ad on imgur decided that it would like to listen to my mic. I know advertising is getting more invasive, but this is a bit much. Is anyone else getting this?

*quietly unplugs microphone*

Only the sexy singles in my area ask to use my microphone...

Ad provided by NSA.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thats the reason i use Adblock.

Click "Allow" and proceed to masturbate furiously, enthusiastically and very very vocally. Fight fire with fire.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I enabled my webcam too they could use that data and start advertising magnum condoms to me *cough*

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

New scams and tricks to really invade your space and some are really dangerous.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Super creepy. I have adblock on so hopefully it blocks this type of shenanigans.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

... This is degenerate. Im seriously considering uninstalling now. Many porn sites have less risky ads nowadays than imgur.

And a better comment section

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Does anyone else "know" they are getting this?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Get Pi-hole on your network. I don't see any ads when browsing mobile anymore when I'm at home. https://pi-hole.net

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I totally forgot about Pi-hole! I have a few Pi's with various functions, but I'm pretty sure I have a Pi2 laying around doing nothing (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you notice any latency on the DNS lookup? Or is the dataset so small that a Pi has no trouble at all doing the lookup? (2/2)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't noticed any latency changes at all. Runs very smooth.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You are lucky my friend. One time an ad asked me if it can use my dick. I said no.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Adblock and uBlock

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

They use the same blocklist, don't they?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but ublock is, in most peoples experience, much better at blocking ads.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Considering uBlock has 300+ blocked and adblock only 6 blocked things in my browser atm, I

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

FUCK, I'm gonna go ahead and use both for a while.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I browse with adblocker, have had no issues with ads

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

how people actually manage to spend any amount of time on the internet without adblock is beyond me

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

the internet is unenjoyable without ad block.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kinda depends what you do online if you "need" one or not tbh. If all you do is browse facebook, use the calendar app and occasionally >>

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>> watch some youtube videos or google a question, you're prolly more likely to be okay with seeing a few ads around and it's not likely >>

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>> to end up hurting the PC. || On the other hand if you use a bunch of sketchy streaming sites or use relatively unknown websites, or >>

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>> even well known officially endorsed websites [like wowhead, which blizz constantly tells wow players to use], then adblock software >>

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>> is basically a requirement for safe browsing at this point.

8 years ago | Likes 129 Dislikes 0

why do people still go online without ad/tracker blocker? it's like jumping naked into a lake full of piranhas

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 3

Yeah, I don't run adblock and have never ran into any problems. People seems to think adblock is the cure for cancer or some shit.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

Ads=cancer Adblock=cures ads Adblock=cures cancer

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Would internet viruses be less abundant with net neutrality being over?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Browsing without ublock origin makes me more nervous than a cat in a rocking chair factory

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've never used any adblock or anti-track. Never noticed anything too invasive that wasn't 0.5 seconds to close or fix.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 8

I prefer it when the people running the websites I use get paid also.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

Pipe the advertisement code directly to the speaker, if they want data, they can have it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wonder what kind of bandwith they have. We have quite a few 100mbit+ lines on Imgur...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well I wasn't trying to DOS them, just give them really confusing data.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...Audiobooks? :D

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Morgan Freeman reading the Bible: get their sinnin asses some JEEZUS!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It would be a bunch of noise in audio form, if someone were to look at the code it would see the scripts code.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well if the script runs on linux, sign me up :p This shit needs to be punished.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't forget to put a stickie note over your built in camera.

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

Thank you! This type of ad is a violation of our advertising policy. I let the ads team know and they're working on tracking it down.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Thank you @sarah for addressing this issue before it gets out of hand!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nice

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ive had ads on the mobile app that open the play store without my touching them. Like i swipe to the next pic and "DOWNLOAD OUR CRAP GAME!!"

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Is there no screening process?

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 2

Usually, ads come from third-party ad providers who are supposed to screen them as part of the contract. So they are screened, but...

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

typically not by in-house staff (that is expensive.) Most places rely on the contract + a penalty when breached model to enforce.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

What often happens is someone like google, will screen 3rd party ad networks who allow another network on their network ->

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Thanks for your time answering people Sarah. But ads on imgur are still too invasive, I have turned on AdBlock and I guess I am not the only

Found out this is the Amazon Echo ad, you hover over and it opens up an ad that needs your microphone. Not sure if anyone said this already

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

ahhaha bullshit she will just make sure it can bypass whatever shitty ad blocker you have

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Websites can whine all they want. Until they get their shit sorted they're staying on my ublock list.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Exactly, I want to unblock imgur, I want to support an amazing site, but the ads track more data then a shady porn site...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Porn sites are actually generally safer than the average. Being safe is the only way to get users coming (hah) more than once.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Being safe is the only way to get users coming more than once." Best argument for condoms i have ever heard.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I like how the url is askalexa, is it trying it trick you thinking it is your alexia?

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

that depends.... who is alexia??

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

It is an ad for alexa, powered by amazon.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

the actual website is mub.lu. It's all trickery! Probably nothing to do with Amazon.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I promise its an amazon ad.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can confirm, it is Amazon from an Amazon Echo Ad.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't mind ads if they were just apart of the page unclickable and made zero noise like a poster. But instead they are all viruses.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd give less of a shit if they bothered to even put any effort into the ads' graphic design.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm okay with them being clickable so long as its not a popup over the main page. People won't bother to type in a url but they'll click.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most ads that are clickable will instead of opening a new tab, will just instantly start a download

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thats why most ads will have a fake X to close it last time I hit it without thinking and got 2 trojans from just clicking.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aaaand banned. How dare we speak out against this site?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Banned? Where??

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

that's one reason for using adblock

8 years ago | Likes 493 Dislikes 5

Plus

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

my uBlock says 52% of imgur has been blocked ad requests.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

uBlock Origin is the better one, since ABP started whitelisting certain advertisers.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I think people use adblock/adblocker as a general term for that particular style of plugin/addon/extension.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't use it until recently some add service decided I needed lots of adds from japan, which apparently need lots of time to load.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I just needed one reason.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Adblock actually sold out and now allows “white listed” ads. Try Ublock Origin.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm only not using it on pages I frequent, subscribed youtube channels and my favourite twitch streamers (except that one time when twitch

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

kept playing 25 minute unskippable ad about mother being the hardest job in the world. For a week. Fuck that noise.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just wait until the advertisers figure out how much money the adblock people want.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even tho i have adblock ive mostly given up on desktop site. Mostly browse mobile which hasnt updated in over a yr. Still no ads!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

uBlock Origin and Ghostery over here.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even more reputable sites have had issues, let alone sites like imgur which will take ads from the shady people they find in dark alleyways.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My ublock has 300+ blocked things from today I guess? Fuck "ads", not gonna turn this off anytime soon.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The blocked requests count on my uBlock Origin regularly runs into the thousands on imgur. It is ridiculous. I wouldn't view without it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's a good adblock for android for this? I could always go for reduced data usage.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a VPN to my home network which has a Pi Hole set up. Works great. Cellular or wifi, always Pi-Hole so don't see a lot of ads

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would love to know how to do something like that. No static IP might be a problem though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use firefox with ublock origin

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Dns66, no root required.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would like to be able to send you my version but idk how. I got the last update before ads.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Opera has builtin adblocker. Works well enough.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's also other data saving stuff in it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even tho I have AdBlock I've been seeing some ads lately, so I decided to back it up with uBlock just to be sure.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

yeah, i'm using uBlock for months now too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

AdBlock sold out. Companies can pay to not have their ads blocked. Just delete it, and leave uBlock. Almost nothing goes trough uBlock

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Adblock sold out a long time ago. They take payment for being on a whitelist and "selected" ads get through

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I switched to ublock after using adblock for years. Adblock had started letting ads through, even when I manually blocked them

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They straight up sold out

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just go with one - having two adblockers is redundant. They choose what to block based on your subscription lists, so just update those.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

But... it makes me feel cool, you know? Like when using those dual pistols from the terrorist on counter strike

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With that said, uBlock is still better than ABP. If you need one reason, it's less straining to the CPU.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Why do you people not have ublock I don't understand

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 1

Professional victims? Nothing is ever their fault, always someone else's fault, even when simple countermeasures would have kept them safe.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

I find uMatrix to be a better fit for my needs?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just looked at my ublock. 506 pop up requests blocked on this site since install.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2,556,639 total for imgur on my ublock.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

392 just today

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ikr, I always use some sort of ad blocker. Fuck me for wanting some peace from constant Ads right?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Not just that but the really invasive ones or ones that try and install malware. Advertisements online are freaking dangerous as hell now.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup. It’s always fun

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because everytime I ask for a recommendation for one I get like 10 people arguing that theirs is better and the other persons' are dangerous

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Install uBlock and also "AdBlock for YouTube". The YT one added a voucher feature somewhat recently that's actually pretty legit. Got me a

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
