The northwest has been on fire this year, burning over 800,000 acres in Montana alone. At least two firefighters have died.

Homes and historical sites have been destroyed, and cities have been evacuated because the smoke has made the air toxic

As a Montanan, I know what's going on in my state - but I haven't seen many people talking about it. We declared a state of emergency on July 23rd, but have received no federal aid.
-CORRECTION- Aid was originally denied, but the decision was reversed after an appeal.

Those aren't clouds bruh

There's mountains behind all that, and a sunrise somewhere.

Even though the fires are still burning, Montana at least has run out of funding.

If there's anything you can do to help, please do. Even if it's just helping us get attention on a national scale. As it is, these fires will keep burning through December.

I'll drop a comment for downvotes as is the custom for awareness posts.

FP EDIT
Okay, phew, figured out how to do this. Okay.

A bunch of people have been asking what they can do to help. It's hard to say, because what we need to happen is to get these fires contained - eg, keep them from spreading any more. To do that, we need more feet on the ground, which takes more funding. If you're in a state that's not at risk for using up your disaster funds, try to see if you can get your local government to send help somehow. I'm neither a firefighter nor a government official, so I'm afraid that I don't know any more details than that.

For individuals, there's a number of charities out there that help those who've lost something to the fire - here's a list from a local newspaper that should have reputable ones. Don't just google one, there are scams out there.
http://missoulian.com/news/state-and-regional/here-s-how-you-can-help-people-affected-by-montana/article_a12407c0-fe6e-5b70-8409-68ad33e84435.html
Or, if you're an argricultural sort, a lot of livestock and crops are going to suffer from this - donate feed if you can, or try to grow more in anticipation of a hard winter - I've seen bets that the price of beef is going to take a hike because of the loss of food stores.

Additionally, I've seen some comments about the ecological side. Again, I'm not an expert on any of this - just someone who's living in it. But the original policies on wildfire suppression led to an overabundance of detritus, sickly old growth, and other factors that make the fires worse. In recent years policy has changed, but the consequences of old actions still linger. I guess I could make a post on the stuff I picked up in school over the years to explain, then link that here?

Anyway, thanks for your support. I just wanted people to know what's happening up here.

It was literally raining ash yesterday. It was so disgusting all you could smell was smoke

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Heartbreaking. 193 wildfires currently active across the US. 43 in Montana alone. https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Washington here. Though not as bad here, still have fires and extremely effected by them all. We need to raise more awareness for Montana.

Blood moon... You ded

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Rice Ridge fire (north of Missoula) yesterday consumed 48,530 acres in one day! Now at over 101,424 acres, only 7% contained!

I'm in the Rogue Valley, been in hazardous AQ for a few days. First week of school will be cancelled.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We've got smoke cover here in Nebraska. This morning the sun was partially covered and the sky looked way different.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Same in iowa. Everything is orangish.

It's times like these I wish I was a billionaire so I could truly help.

@OP, California here. Our state's are burning down around us, yet everyone seems stuck on the folks growing gills. Stay strong, and carry on

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Cali is always shitting on Texas. No surprise there.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those pictures from missoula?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not all of em, but a couple. Can see the smoke plumes and orange haze (when you can see more than 3 feet anyway) but not the flames here

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn shit looks like ragnorok

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm at Flathead Lake right now. Everything is covered in ash, you can see it raining down.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I woke up to a layer of ash on my tent in the Little Belts this weekend, I can't imagine how thick it must be up there

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was at Lake McDonald a day before Sperry burnt down last week and couldn't even see across the lake

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Croatia is burning as well, i doubt all of this is an accident

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

For the downvote fairies denying a link to climate change: Hotter summers mean more burns.

Oh wow. I live in BC and have all the sympathy for you. Some of my friends had to flee with flames chasing them. Please stay as safe as you

can and help each other.

Beautiful British Columbia here. We are currently seeing the worst wild fire season in our province's history http://globalnews.ca/news/3585

I wanted to let you know that your link takes us to an article about "Quebecer had big dreams for orphan Haitians". Stay safe in BC! *Hugs*

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Washington here. The smoke here is making it hard to breath here. I can't imagine how bad it is there.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

Unhealthy forest underbrush. Need more smaller fires. More often, to keep the Fires of Hell at bay.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the policy has changed to containment in recent years. We just don't have the resources to contain this many this big

Rogers Pass, somewhere along Highway 200.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

holy jesus. stay safe out there

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's on Highway 200 in Roger's Pass. Thankfully not as bad where I live, but still categorized as "unhealthy" air quality for lots of us

holy shit you can see the flames on satellite? jeesus good video

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe people should stop voting for assholes that want to cut emergency funding. Like Montana and Texas did. We can clearly see it is vital.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 5

no but but both parties are just as bad! right? RIGHT?!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Dont mean to brag but just north in bc we have almost 500,000 hectares burning. More than a million acres.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Almost 600,000 acres have burned in MT alone.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit man

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be fair Canadian Provinces have a lot more hectares to burn so it's not hard to get BC past a US state.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On top of that BC has been state of emergency for a while and the Fed is chipping in here and there to help.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The reluctance of your Fed to do the same and the deaths is just fucked, especially since Montana is so rural, stay safe and good luck

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gee, I wonder why extreme weather events are happening with more frequency?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

because the end times are coming duh! *sarcasm*

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This happened because we had a wet winter so lots of undergrowth grew then dried out Its been happening in the area for thousands of years

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

We had the wettest winter on record and the driest summer on record. So, no it hasn't been happening like this for thousands of years.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No it wasn't source? Anything I can find is it was the wettest winter since the mid 90's so I'm calling bullshit on that one

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Congrats but Seattle isn't Montana and Montana is the state with 43 active wildfires and Montana didn't have an unusual winter or summer

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I live in BC, Canada, and everything's on fire here, too. This year has been awful for fires, and we've hardly seen any rain for weeks.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Here we go.

8 years ago | Likes 199 Dislikes 14

Fellow Missoula here. It's miserable!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Great Falls. It's getting ridiculous out here.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

GL, OP !

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The same thing is happening up here in British Columbia, Canada. The smile is so heavy and blows east to all the other provinces.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I'm in Cawston, I haven't seen blue sky in a month. My sister is in Central Alberta and she said its just as bad.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What smile???

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

He meant slime

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm thinking they meant smoke.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm on the Front, and it has been terrible up here! Stay safe and thanks for getting this out there!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm glad people are responding - it's the best I could have hoped for.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not actually meant with the comedy that may feel implied, but too bad we couldn't send our hurricane over there instead of wasting it here.

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Know what a fire devil (or fire whirl) looks like...? Multiply that by a bunch ;)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know right? Apparently even if the infrastructure wasn't a problem, we can't have Harvey's water used on the fires. Invasive species n all

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

So tilting Texas a little bit is out of the question?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Personally I'm game to try.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What did you do America?

Elected Trump

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 7

it rained a lot. a lot of things grew. now its really hot. so all the stuff dried out. now its on fire

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Ignored climate change? :(

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 15

More serious answer: there is actually a history of forest fires in this section of the US. Before we started to stop them, they were a lot>

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As for the grassy areas, ever seen dried grass burns? It's like a box of matches, except it's usually an entire field of them.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Built a country on a whole bunch of ancient indian burial grounds.

8 years ago | Likes 181 Dislikes 4

I was going to say exactly this

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

we fuckin told you to stop.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Are you kidding... we made those burial grounds.

8 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 2

White people need to stop taking credit for everything. They didn't NEED you to kill them to have burial grounds. They could die just fine!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

But we were so much more effective at getting them there.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, part 2 was telling the indians to fuck off, mostly through mass murder.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

They were happy little genocide messages wrapped in warm blankets.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also, like, so many guns.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup, warm smallpox blankets

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm in Gilroy, we just had a fire start south of town last night!

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh no! I'm in San Jose and had no idea! Best of luck down there :/

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Free roasted garlic, right?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did it smell like garlic?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

This town smells like garlic for most of the summer anyway, but right now it smells like wood smoke

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is it still burning? I need to go to Safeway but that's in my way :x

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Safeway is just fine I was next to their parking lot when I took that picture. the fire is still going in the hills.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait, that is the picture from the Gilroy FD Twitter, I took this picture: https://twitter.com/demonbob_badman/status/904817631542239232

I live in the Willamette Valley (Oregon) the smoke here is awful. Hope you're safe OP.

8 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 0

I'm over in Reedsport on the coast and even the smoke is bad here.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know a couple people who've had to be evacuated, but I'm in missoula so I'm only dying from the toxic air. Staying indoors, using masks

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same, I'm in Corvallis worried about my horse who lives outside :(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm up in Albany and there's some days you can actually look directly at the bright red Dot that is the sun. Stay safe guys.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Albany here, too. I've never seen this much smoke in my entire life.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For real. I'm a smoker and I can barely go outside. It's ridiculous.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Portland here, I've been having trouble breathing all day. I can't imagine how it's like in Montana.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me too! And there was ash coming down.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it's like snow, only bad for your lungs.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bend here, I know how you feel.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

11 miles from the giant highway 97 fire. I feel you so much. Does the inside of your house smell like smoke??

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That it does.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine too. I cant get away from this smell -_-

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm in the Rogue Valley, and the air here is toxic. The Chetco Bar fire is up to 143,000 acres last time I heard.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A fellow rogue valley resident.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Whoa, me too. It's still so bad. I've had a headache for a couple weeks now and I can't get it to go away.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Howdy neighbor! Visibility is currently less than 1 mile. I hope y'all are remembering your masks:)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I live near Crater Lake and i just moved here and cant find news sources ANYWHERE on line. Either of you guys have any news links?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was just drinking a beer in Eugene and thought that would have been funny.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me too, can't take my kid outside. Can't imagine being any closer. OP how can we help?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's been bad the last two days in Corvallis. Smoke forecast doesn't hold out much promise either.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't looked at the forecast yet but I believe it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

U.S. forest service posted it. Whole valley just socked in. Lived here my whole life and don't remember it being this bad.
