For many years

I found it easy to pretend to be something else, seamless. The social side of things however was always horrible.

Diagnosis

THERE you demanded proof, and now you have it!

Look it up!

Its true!

Sometimes it freaks me out to see how different they all are.

Especially for women

Things like short bouts of social skills can be handled easily, or being social in groups.

**OR ON

Just dont let being socially retarded stop you from doing things guys, i put myself out there because i didnt realise i could get liked LESS for modelling. i didnt understand the apparent risks.

Gandalf, or sexy Gandalf, whatever floats your boat.

So now that I dont have to pretend to be a bunch of people that I am not, I can be sexy gandalf, and build my robot and have one friend, and make posts on imgur that make it to front page. :)

*FP EDIT
I made a facebook page if you guys have any questions about asperger!!
I started it cus there were sooo many messages!
page is https://www.facebook.com/Aspies4life/

Everyone pretends, not just people with Aspergers, in my experience Aspergers people often just suck at it.

LOL yes basically

They don't all look very different.

People would like you because you are sexy, no matter what. It would be significant harder for a less attractive person to be accepted

9 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 4

This is true for a short period of time. After that most people drop you because you're too much to deal with. Too taxing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ugly + few social skills = "creep". Pretty + few social skills = "entitled and bitchy" I bet, since we're fairly judgmental fuckers.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

No that's bulima

I choose not to be a model for the sake of every one else's self esteem :p

9 years ago | Likes 140 Dislikes 3

So what I hear you saying is you choose not to model so we don't get an inflated self-esteem? Awright, I can respect that.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's funny, i choose not to model for my own self esteem

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hmmm.. given your username,

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

can't have everyone else feeling like the sexiest person on the planet, now can we?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's my reasoning too. I can't have that many people feeling SO much better about themselves...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

How do you go about getting tested as an adult?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I've heard it's harder to diagnose as an adult, because we experience, adapt, and mimic more social skills.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure it would even be worth it. If you're having social problems, go to a therapist for that and see what comes of it.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Some source for #3 or is that just your personal observation based opinion?

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

"These people have Aspergers due to something social.." Pretty sure that's not how that works. At all.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I mean sure imitating other people's behaviour IS often found in people who suffer from Aspergers, but doing it doesn't make you autistic.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Step 2: Get vaccinated

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

..and female. I have a friend with Aspergers. His lack of social skills come off as creepy and weird. It really holds him back.

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Same. It's sad because he can be really cool sometimes but it's hard to bring him in to new groups. I usually have to prepare my friends.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's bullshit how anti social people with peculiar habits are just automatically deemed autistic now, and treated poorly in the process.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

for the record: anti-social is not the same thing as asocial. Asocial means you don't go out much. Anti-social means you stab people.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

I'm an Aspie. I'm not really treated bad, but that's just my experience.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Says a person who has NO clue what autism is. There is a specific diagnostic process. Though it's a spectrum, most diagnoses are definitive.

Many models have Asperger due to social imitation and mimicry?! WTF?? this is nonsense. Maybe OP is a model with AS but the rest isn't true.

9 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 11

Maybe she meant many with Aspergers go into modeling and acting? Who knows

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is true? I had to mimic my way to communicate with people without saying things I shouldn't say. Sure it slips sometimes but. It's true.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Are you on the spectrum? Try interpreting what she meant instead of being so literal with word placement.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

Not to mention that when you have a harder time learning and sticking to social rules, it feels more like an act than who you really are.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah I'd like to see a source

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Girl strokes her ego and imgur is...Imgur. Can't recognize yourself while doing the same face in all of these? Mayhem account ≠ pro model.

9 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 8

My advice would be to stop biting onto your cheeks to create an appearance of bone structure. It just ends up looking weird.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

This is the exact opposite way around than what they meant.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

It is exactly what OP said. Re-read her quote in picture #3

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

"than what they meant."

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

As an AS-er, I can see it. Specific thought patterns and hyper-attention to detail can lead to some unique abilities.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 9

Maybe we can fit in by mimicry, but we don't have AS due to imitation or mimicry.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 7

I think the point OP is trying to make is that as ASD we spend our entire lives mimicking others behaviour to "fit in". Acting and 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

modelling draws from the same skillset, so we develop an aptitude for it just by existing. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I realized long ago that I'd never "fit in" and really was disgusted at the idea that I needed to. I'm happy with my choice.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could not have missed the point more.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

OP could have worded it so it doesn't sound like she thinks mimicry or imitation can cause Aspergers. You're missing my point.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I think you're the only one who thought that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yes I can see why you interpreted it that way, but since it's such a ridiculous claim, the intended meaning was obvious.

Things became a lot easier when I had a diagnosis for my issues. Giving a name to my problems made them seem a lot less insurmountable

9 years ago | Likes 273 Dislikes 2

When my girlfriend of 5 years was diagnosed, it explained so much. I thought she was just a huge bitch for a really long time.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Exactly. Diagnosis last year. Totally helped me understand why I reacted weird when emotionally overwhelmed.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is how I feltgettimg my LD diagnosis...at 20

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My mom says "Labels are unnecessary can't we all just get along?" No. Labels are good. They validate, give recommended course of treatment.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unless you have insurmountitus.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ditto. I knew I was wired differently, just didn't know it had a name and that others had the same issues.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you learn you're normal, just a different kind of normal.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you even get a diagnosis? I really need one, but I don't know where to go.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See a healthcare professional. After lots of observation and talking, they can narrow down to what's wrong.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kind of gives weight to the classical idea of naming a beast or a villain to tame or defeat them.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that's how I felt about my anxiety

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fact.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1. This right here, most of my life growing up had me in an anxious mess, failing in school, never knowing what was wrong with me

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2. always feeling like I was just "weird" compared to everyone else, at 22 or so I was diagnosed with Asperger's, it was like

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3. Oh, I can maybe deal with this now that I can put a name to it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and a lot more made up

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 90

Yeah, the person with a medical degree in psychology that I see made that shit right up. You dickhead.

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 3

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I've had to pretend to be like everyone else for 34 years of my life because it's all in my head, right? Fuck right off you ignorant twat.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

i am also pretending to be like everyone else, and i am not autistic. I am just a human and that's what we do.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 25

Nah, you just fake af

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

"I am not autistic so everyone else who had similar issues can't be autistic either, my experiences are universal and dictate everyone's"

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

^ that's what you sound like. Awesome , you're not austistic. Shit, you still have issues. That doesn't negate others who have a diagnosis.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Any other advantages other than a label? Treatments, strategies, techniques that helped or just a sense of understanding?

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

The psychologist I'm seeing doesn't know which way to take my treatment until we can have a definitive answer on which of the (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

possibilities we are looking at (one of which is autism/asperger). Knowing would really help streamline my process (for lack of better word)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was diagnosed with two clinical depressions before getting my diagnosis at the age of 21, it explained a lot of my issues.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In terms of treatment, strategies and techniques, getting diagnosed makes such a huge difference that it's vital.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Agreed. Knowing what it was let me do a tonne of my own research, testing on myself, etc.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

thanks, have a friend who doesn't want his kid dx for fear she will feel different! Of course he's an idiot!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Best advice I could give anyone is to keep it to one's self. No matter your age. Even telling family members have complicated things.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sorry to hear it worked out negatively for you. Explaining the diagnosis helped family members, and friends better understand my situation.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I didn't get a name for my weird, I just got a sheet of paper that says "close but no cigar, but here's how you're fucked up"

9 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

Pretty much the same for me, but I don't think it would have changed me much either way.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is what I'm afraid of. I have an appt for the referral for the testing and I'm a bit scared of not getting a definitive answer.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, I know exactly where my issues lie, I just don't fit the mold well enough. The only words I have are dyslexia and mild aphasia.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Although it's technically not aphasia because I've never hit my head.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We're all here, because we're not all there...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My diagnosis has fucked me up. It doesn't fit me at all and it just seemed half ass. It's ruining my life right now.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The only difference now is that you have a name for an aspect of your personality. You don't have to do anything else about it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, it's not an aspect of my personality. I don't have Aspergers, yet I've been improperly labeled. I was misdiagnosed and am now suffering.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you know you were misdiagnosed, why is it bothering you?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cause I need a medical waiver to join the military with it, and since the budget cuts they rarely give them out anymore.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just gotta remember that the diagnosis doesn't change who you are. If someone said your skin was purple would it make you act differently?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aspergers doesn't carry the stigma it used to. The libertarian party even chose a person with autism as their Presidential candidate.

9 years ago | Likes 325 Dislikes 64

That's not fair to people with autism. Gary Johnson isn't autistic. He's an idiot.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I laughed because it was a joke, then I thought you may have been serious and had to double check the comments. TIL i'm autistic

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

I always found it weird how people lose their shit over racism, sexism, etc., but mocking mental disabilities is A-OK.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 5

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

Humour =/= bigotry or racism. It can be part of it, but is does not necessitate it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not quite sure what that means.. if you're saying that something provocative/controversial can be funny, I agree. If you're defending 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

tasteless and repugnant statements veiled as humor, I don't. Would we find jokes about Ben Carson losing because he's a nigger funny?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

They meant it as an insult, since to this person autistic automatically means stupid, which also automatically makes this commenter a cunt.

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 13

I'm not sure that's what he meant. Gary Johnson's got a rep for being kind of socially awkward. He's more of a stoner than an Aspie though.

A. Something that her predecessors, her colleagues (including her accuser, John Boenner) and many others were doing?

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

She was advised to use a private email, not her own private server. A private email account and a private server are very different things.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 12

Yes, which is why I'm not talking about what she was advised to do. I'm talking about what her colleagues on both sides of the aisle did.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

She was advised to have a private email server by both previous Secretaries of State.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

He advised her to use a private email ACCOUNT, not set up her own server in her home. You can use a private email account on unclass.

unclass?

B. Also, did not actually involve any properly marked classified material, per the FBI.

So is this getting upvoted because she is a model, or because she has a mild form of autism?

Okay, I have asperger's and you're making it sound as if it makes you look different. Autism doesn't change your physical appearance. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

It's really not that big of an achievement, to be frank. Just going outside and being near people is just as difficult for people like us2/2

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

She's not making it sound that way if you look at it from another angle. She's saying she feels comfortable by looking different ways 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

because she doesn't feel at ease with who she is on the inside. Or was, until her diagnosis. I'd refer to her post from the day before =]

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Scientific evidence suggests it does. I have aspergers myself.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 10

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Is it clinically viable to diagnose Asperger's in the US anymore? A friend who is a therapist said that he could not clinically diagnose...

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I was diagnosed with aspergers when I was about 9, but most it got put under a generalized Autism with some other stuff

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Technically nobody can diagnose it any more. The DSM V replaced it and a few others with the umbrella term Autism Spectrum Disorder.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's no longer in the, disease manual thing; it's just high functioning autism now instead of a separate thing. I never knew it was 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

classified separately, as it had always been made very clear to me that it was high functioning autism. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Really really high-functioning autism. High enough to generally look normal but autistic enough to fuck over your daily life.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

High functioning Autism now, and Hans Aspergers a Nazi.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is, it's just that they would rather like to say your on the autism spectrum or you're high functioning rather than give pin point it

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I was diagnosed when I was 9 (I'm 19 now) and my therapist told me about it last year. I don't like being labeled but at the same time 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It made me kinda angry that they wouldn't recognize it as it is and just wanted to use a blanket term.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have aspergers because I refuse to say "I'm autistic" and confuse people and give them the wrong idea.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My father refused to get me analyzed and diagnosed with anything, even after most of my teachers through elementary suggested I may have 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

, most likely, aspergers because he wanted to dodge that sort of thing. Ironically, the only thing that has come of it is a sort of 2/?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My father refused to get me analyzed and diagnosed with anything, even after most of my teachers through elementary suggested I may have 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

with Asperger's. Was he saying he is not qualified or that the diagnosis is too indecisive.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Asperger's no longer technically exists. You're now on the Autism Spectrum, high functioning.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks to all of you.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was diagnosed a while ago, but I believe that they now just say that you are on a spectrum, since it's rather difficult to pinpoint.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes ^. They don't use Asperger as a label any longer. My son was diagnosed but they've now changed the label to "high functioning autism".

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The latest DSM manual no longer lists Asperger's a separate diagnosis. It and several others are now lumped under Autism Spectrum Disorder.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Kinda, it's lumped with autism but some specialists(really good ones from my experience) still use both due (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

to it being a narrower diagnosis then plain autism. Once again from my experience (2/2)

My GF is an Aspie & she is awesome! She's brutally honest, thinks farts are funny, and would rather hump on the couch than go to bars.

9 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 14

The brutal honesty is the part I love most. Learn to deliver it with a deadpan and people will not be able to tell if you're serious.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Laughs at farts and likes to stay in and smash no no parts? Wife her.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

"smash no no parts" delighted me to no end.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Happy to be of service.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe I have aspergers...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

None of those necessarily associate with asperger's. I don't say this on diss on your girlfriend, but to make point that people who are1/2

9 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 0

.. unusually honest or like to stay home rather than go to party don't automatically have any development disorders. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

Of course. But it is true that Aspies tend to lack tact and avoid noisy places with lots of people. Girls seem "guyish" and guys seem "rude"

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

This makes me think I may have Aspergers. I feel like my mom with 35+yrs of experience as a special ed teacher would have noticed though.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

There are online "screeners". If they say you may have it, you can see a dr, but if you're 16+ there isn't much you can do except "know".

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In B4, "Where do you think she got the 35 years of experience?"

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And just to be fair there is some academic weigh behind reclassifying aspergers as a personality, and not a syndrome

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Source? A proper peer reviewed academic one would be nice :)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

There's evidence to there being associated neurological abnormalities which may not be part of an undisturbed pattern of development. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But I think in some cases a medical diagnosis can be helpful in understanding yourself and getting proper support in say, education. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your gf def sounds awesome :) make sure she knows!

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 3

She knows I think she's awesome, but it's another thing for her to believe it about herself :) Years of being called "weird" takes a toll.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

no never tell her it will make her love you more if you're mysterious and reserved

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

This is the advice to listen to

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I doubt most people who claim to have aspergers actually have it. It affects like 31 million people, the chance she is is staggeringly low.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

Well she's been formally diagnosed so there's that. Also, I wouldn't call 31 million "staggeringly low".

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There are 7.4 billion people. 31 million out of 7.4 billion is less than half a percent. Staggeringly low.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Compared to most medical conditions, 1 in 200 is overwhelmingly high.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I had a 1:200 chance of winning the lottery I'd play those 'staggeringly low' odds every week.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Female Aspies basically follow social norms in many places and nice companions. For males aspie life is much harder.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

This is true. If you're going to have Asperger's it's a good idea to be female :)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

well... Shit :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean. Yes... But, kinda not much one can do. It is not really a choice, you know.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Of course there's nothing you can do. Sorry, it was a lame joke :-|

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

np, man.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My son is on the spectrum. He makes my socially awkward youth look like a non-stop raging party.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Honestly, this is a wide spectre. It's not like + or -. Mild cases for females make basically what every mom want their god girl to be.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

social norms for guys are vary different. Most of my even mildly autistic adult male acquaintances are single, even having great jobs...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

True, my son has a few good friends and is bloody brilliant. He just comes off to some as chronically goofy/weird.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hollywood have thought us how a guy should be to date womans... being outside that "Box" makes it hard to find someone you dare ask out.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think you quite understand problems of people with autistic spectre disorders... (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Having critical IT systems fail and 200 ppl unable to work, no problem i'll fix it. Ask a girl for a date nope thats to high risk of failure

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anyway. Finding a date is not a main problem. Not conforming to image of "husband" or "boyfriend" is far worse. Anyway, doesn't matter much.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2/2) This is like saying that problem with being paralyzed is that you can't pee standing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My husband has Aspergers & it's very different than that for us. He's great tho & I love him to death. His OCD stuff drives me mad tho. Lol.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah male Aspies have a harder time for sure. Girls have it easier because they "act more like guys". My GF "gets" men much more than...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

...women, who tend to have much more subtle social rules.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I feel you. Part of the reason he and I get along so week is I'm agoraphobic(among other things) I see a psych and a therapist about it1/?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But still don't like to leave the house or the few other places we frequent. GameStop, grocery store, comic shop, etc...
