#ughnotthisshitagain

Quarterly company meeting today, we thought we were going to talk about an exciting new year ahead after being the most profitable organization in our rankings two years in a row.

Owner opened meeting announcing he's selling and our last day is February 1st.

It's 50 jobs being lost in total, saddest of all is the overwhelming majority of us who love our jobs. Especially me!! This was my dream job, kinda fell into my lap after I had to let go of my last job during the pandemic. I was always so thankful for everyday being there and my work was appreciated in return. It's just a job, but there is something special when you can easily pay your bills and feel fulfilled at the end of the day by your work. Plus it was so fucking fun with amazing coworkers!!

Such a mixed bag of emotions right now.

Shit.

I will never have a dream job, because my dream is to not have a job

Been there, multiple times with multiple dream jobs. It stung each time, but I found new jobs, dreams, and dream jobs. I hope it's similar for you. *hugs* It's important to mourn, but I hope you find a good future soon. :)

All of you remember for the future just exactly how much your managements value and support you when there's more money to be made elsewhere

Why I choose a career with at least the option of self employment. The work is harder and the responsibilities greater but at least it is a guaranteed job.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

I agree, I did for 20 years and I most likely return to it.

I lost my dream job as well about 7 years ago my current job is okay but i hope some day i can really enjoy what i do for work again while making more than enough to live.

Where's that post where all the employees spend the last day of work doing nothing but write recommendation letters for each other?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some people never get to work their dream job. I'm in my mid 40's and there is nothing I have ever done that would excite me to go back to doing. All my jobs have been out of necessity and what I could find.

This sucks, and a crappy time of year to announce it, right before the holidays. Shame on them for not finding a deal where people kept their jobs. That said, sorry to hear it, but there will be another opportunity and you’ll probably end up better off than you were. Good luck!

I've written resumes and part of my day job for almost two decades across a boatload of industries. DM me if you'd like a review. I don't charge Imgurians who are between or soon to be between jobs.

Perfect opportunity for you and coworkers to offer services to the new company. Typically there are pieces / parts of the operation that are too skill intensive or monotonous to fit well into corporate culture. Specialize in the shit job you know they will stumble with. Corps roll up companies thinking they can handle everything and months later it's a shitshow because what they pay attention to is not always what the client needs. Throw the offer out - you already don't have the job.

I’m almost scared to ask but if you’re in the US are you legally entitled to redundancy pay?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can't even imagine loving a job, let alone being laid off from said job, that sucks. I'm scared of being laid off from this job I don't even like. I'm 40 years old and have relinquished the idea of ever loving a job....I hope you find another one that you enjoy just as much.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What is the job? Where do you live?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No such thing as a dream job. Fuck corporations. You mean nothing to them.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Over a year for me now and I still have a burning hatred for the old owner/boss. Small company we built together and he did the same thing. Fuck you, Rafi

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When the new company needs something from you - contractor rates are 4x your old rate, 8 hr minimum, paid in cash up front.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup - that’s the way it goes.. least you got two good years more than some people so..👍

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can frame it as being one of the lucky ones to get laid off in this case, instead of finding your dream job and then watching your dream job get morphed into yet another corporate clusterfuck. You're now free to find the next dream job, where your old coworkers are just going to find their jobs progressively less and less dreamy

been there, 3 times.

owner cashing out on their employees hard work. tale as old as time.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bet that in a month there won't be many left. Good luck all

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Happened to me years ago. New company bought my old company and “awarded” me my old job (which I didn’t want) because I had experience with both cultures. I left for a reason.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP, the owner got a huge paycheck... and never face a fuck about y'all.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Say you own it and decide to retire, what would you do? Give it away or sell the company?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Employee-owned. Sell or give, either way it should go to the people who made it successful. And as the owner, it's presumable that I profited greatly from their labor, so they have already bought it in truth.

(I wanted to more fully explain my answer, sorry for the double-notification)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The same thing happened to me a few years ago. I found my dream job and thought "I could stay here for another decade at least!" Company's funding got pulled and 80% of the people were laid off the day after Thanksgiving break. It took time to reset, but when it did, I landed in an even better job - a dream of dreams job. Hang in there. It's okay to be sad and upset - give yourself time to reset - try to enjoy the holidays. Then get back in there. Best of luck!

Word for word, just happened to me. Laid off 2 weeks ago just short of 2 year anniversary, 1 day warning.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sucks, huh? This happened to me in 1999. The bastards that bought the company I worked for closed us, and laid us all off. <3

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

A lot of us have similar stories. Worse part is you rarely see the people you enjoyed working with. 😕

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks, I know in time it will be faded, for now it does suck!

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

So many companies buying other companies, and so many greedy bastards willing to sell out. It makes no sense at all.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Lots of company owners reaching retirement age and deciding to sell when they retire. What else can they do? Give it some thought.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On the bright side, my layoff led me to start my own business, which I ran successfully from then to 2014. Cash in my pocket for 15 years!

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

if it's a business with accessible barriers to entry, get together with those colleagues you like, set up, and compete the fuck out of your former company

2 years ago | Likes 235 Dislikes 3

Ironically, that is the origin story from 35 years ago. It's being absorbed by a multi- billion dollar enterprise. Pretty much met the final boss endgame.

2 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 1

If you haven't signed a non compete contract, don't sign one now

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually, don't sign anything from this point forward.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Time to do it again and sell it, but for more.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

actually, unless it's impossible for real, being absorbed by a multinational is a perfect opportunity to set back up as a lean and mean business that can innovate and uses its experience to differentiate and their contacts to kickstart

2 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 1

You're right no doubt! If I could disclose what company/industry it is (it'll be public knowledge within 30 days unless someone leaks it), it will be really obvious why it's not possible to overtake/resurge.

No way it's enjoyable to work at Nvidia.

Dang, now I am curious.

Why is everyone being let go? Many companies are not worth much without the human capital...

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

If it's a tech company, it could be acquired just for their patents and IP. Say Sony wants to make a new type of display that PodunkTech invented and patented. Sony decides buying PodunkTech is cheaper than licensing the patents. Do you think Sony wants to keep PodunkTech around instead of just making those displays themselves?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It could be just for the brand. Like if Coca Cola bought Pepsi. They could probably make all the extra soda in their current Coca Cola factories and wouldn't need Pepsi employees.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

It used to be called labour

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Human capital is more accurate as they are often what makes the company what it is, not just moving things around

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Big companies often buy small companies just to kill the competition.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

Or acquire patents

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ooh, yeah, that’s a biggie

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And trademarks and copyrights. Or trade secrets. Or rare/unique assets.
