Woah woah; this ain’t just farm girl strong… 200kg is an absolutely incredible lift for a woman of her size (mostly comparing to the plates)… is this a real lift or a bit or something? She’s gotta be one of the strongest women’s on the planet pound for pound?
No knee support at all? I know I'm not an expert by any means, but my knees hurt just watching her lift 200kg without knee support. Is it her extra-wide stance or just way more leg power than you might expect?
I mean it's not cheating but just calling it a deadlift is pretty disingenuous. They're different techniques and anyone's sumo max is going to be much higher than their deadlift max
Here at Farmgirl Acres, oh we’ve got a heck of a thirsty crop this season. They need a lot of care and clickin’. These upvotes will be harvested in the fall, and processed into FIPs (Fake Internet Points). You see, it’s all in the neuron activation… *trails off*
Polish farmers do not rely on machinery to do any tasks on farms having banned all forms of mechanical devices and vehicles after being trounced by the technologically superior german war machine in ww2. Every polish farmer be they guy or gal must lift everything by hand. Thus polish farmers are renowned for their lifting prowess. Normal city folk are very weak by comparison however and so they think anyone who can lift heavy objects above a certain weight is just pulling this shit out of my ass
Sumo doesn't count (and sumo is scary as hell, I ain't seen someone crush their foot yet but I also ain't gone and looked around for it), but impressive lift nonetheless.
I guess my assumption is that if you're lifting a heavy weight that you would want to do it in the most efficient way possible. Seems strange that that method doesn't count.
It's "cheating" if your goal is strength, if your goal is just recording the biggest number then it's an advantage. It's a matter of perspective. I don't care what the number says, that's ego and the ego should be left at the door.
While not as extreme, from a lifting perspective it would be like riding a bike for a mile and logging your time as running a mile. Sure, you covered the same distance....
While I understand its controversy in the weightlifting community (mostly power lifters), it is a great stance to practice for functional movement. You can't always be in a perfect position to deadlift something and certainly don't want your feet near it if it drops. Makes sense to me to practice conventional and sumo.
But yet it’s a perfectly legal technique in powerlifting competitions, and not the least bit controversial among competitors. But all these internet bros act like its cheating.
That was my thought as well. I don't lift, so this may be good technique for all I know, but toes that close to heavy weighs being dropped makes me nervous.
Sumo vs conventional is a can of worms currently in the lifting community. Powerlifters like it bc it requires different levers and less movement of the bar, making it "easier". However, there are really strong people who lift more weight conventional than sumo lol. Objectively, I believe it is a variation of deadlift, like an Incline bench. Is it a deadlift? Obj yeah. Does it use the same levers, and do the same work? Obj no. We should just give them both separate categories for records etc.
Just going to say this before I get water boarded like I usually do when this topic comes up. It takes hard work, and solid strength to lift weight like that sumo or otherwise. One is not "better" than the other, and I won't argue that. But don't you dare tell me they are the same, bc they are not. But some people can lift both really well! Yeah, sounds like they are full body strong lol wtf do you expect. Just put them in different categories and end it.
As I know it, a proper deadlift uses a different stance/technique. The one I use primarily relies on your back, not your legs. You keep your legs mostly straight but slightly bent, bend at the waist, keep your butt stuck out and then basically lift by straightening up with your back again. Your legs remain in the same position throughout the whole lift, so they don’t really give power to the lift.
Her lift largely come from her legs, which is easier, but the effort is still impressive.
Also cause she’s got a lowered stance, she doesn’t need to lift the bar up as high, nor hold it for as long; both of which make it an easier variant of the lift.
Still, 200kgs is impressive regardless of the technique. I’m only hitting about 110kgs (at least 8 reps) with a standard deadlift.
Don’t think I’d manage 200kgs, even with her technique.
That’s Romanian or ‘stuff-legged deadlift’ you’re describing. Deffo should work the legs - hamstrings mostly - but shouldn’t work the back too much. Develops a lot of DOMS/cellular micro-damage due to the exaggerated stretch in the eccentric portion of the lift.
As the other guy said, because it works a different set of muscles, it absolutely has its benefits - particularly when done in conjunction with more traditional lifts.
I mean , if you're talking about powerlifting they also allow a 1 inch bench press with your back arched so much you're practically walking on the ceiling. Besides that the heaviest deadlifts are conventional by strongman like Halfthor and Eddie. They honestly should just be treated as different lifts. Both are impressive and earned, but they are objectively different lifts.
I was thinking I was doing it wrong. Surely it's not right that way?? Fine to lift that way but not a training exercise. She lift mire than I can by a lot tho
Mechanically there's actually a pretty big difference. Sumo brings in way more quads compared to hams, so you can lift more weight, if that's the goal.
Had her stance been a true sumo stance I would agree. She is reducing her range of motion and her duration of lift makes this form a definite target of criticism. I'm 40 as of this year and have been lifting since I was 15. The majority of lifters I have worked with would have something to say about this. Now if you attribute this to something akin to cheat curls I can agree you will see improvement from its implementation but it is not the desired form for the defined lift.
What I read about them is that there's some sort of body proportion thing to it, I think is was the longer your legs are relative to your torso, the "better" sumo will be over conventional... or easier sumo will be. It was years ago and I don't recall ever seeing if that was bro science or actual science so take that with a grain of salt.
All I know for sure is my preference is for conventional, or slightly off conventional. Do what you want, the important thing is to stay active people!

Nah, it just shortens the distance the bar needs to travel. Her stance is way too wide for sumo, though

TheOldSchoolisBack
If it doesn’t count, why is it perfectly legal in competition?
Babomonkey
I know nothing about weightlifting. Why doesn't "sumo" count? I mean, she lifted it, right?
dopaminelever
It’s gatekeekng. It counts. Sumo is compliant with powerlifting regulations.
uplock
The extra wide stance and hip position reduces the amount of movement required and provides better leverage than other forms
ihateimgurffs
It doesn't. It is just better for some hip configurations. Both are pretty much identical from "how hard it is" standpoint.
Babomonkey
I guess my assumption is that if you're lifting a heavy weight that you would want to do it in the most efficient way possible. Seems strange that that method doesn't count.

wick3dwank3r
I think conventional deadlift she would do 150 maybe 170ish max , without dropping the bar ,lift & descend ,still damn good

UpbeatDownbeat
Definitely too wide for sumo stance. Should be shoulder width + two foot shimmies.
Also she seems to be pulling too much at the end of her lifts because she's arching her back backwards.
Lightsmith
Further feet are apart means she doesnt have to lift as far. Totally not a cheat tho...
4etherling
She is cheating her range of motion so she doesn't have to work for the lift like a real deadlift. This is not a form correct deadlift.
Spanky44

This. Here you can see her back doesn’t straighten out until her legs are fully straight and has almost no impact on the height of the bar.
StevieTheAussie

StevieTheAussie
Ah yeah you’re right, I am thinking of the Romanian deadlift - it’s the only one I use so I guess I just dropped the first bit.
It does work the legs too, but I was saying that a Romanian deadlift works the lower back more than a regular deadlift.
erroniousmaximus
Sumo stance is odd. But I’m not educated in lift dynamics to say whether it’s good, bad, or just different.
ihateimgurffs
Just different.
thetonestarr
As the other guy said, because it works a different set of muscles, it absolutely has its benefits - particularly when done in conjunction with more traditional lifts.
Ctidz
It's not bad per se, but does tend to be easier for most people. It works a few different muscles than conventional. Both are useful.
jjw9
Sumo is best for certain body types with: long legs and arms, plus short torso.
Regardless of the stance, the lifter has to have the grip strength to maintain hold on the bar. This gal’s grip strength is phenomenal.
dudeloveall
I used to lift with a super wide sumo stance like that. I never smashed my toes, but I did pull my groin muscle so bad I couldn't walk right.

I was thinking I was doing it wrong. Surely it's not right that way?? Fine to lift that way but not a training exercise. She lift mire than I can by a lot tho

Depends on what you're training. Sumo deadlift works the muscles slightly different compared to a strict deadlift or a romanian deadlift.
kitamuramiike
Mechanically there's actually a pretty big difference. Sumo brings in way more quads compared to hams, so you can lift more weight, if that's the goal.

It’s an acceptable technique in powerlifting, but some people don’t like it. Kind of a controversy in that community.
