This new state of the art prison holds some of Norways hardest criminals. It's changed bars in font of windows for hardened glass. (Halden prison)
A view from one the kantinas
Normal cell block hallway
This is the cells they live in. Everyone get their own cell with a small TV and private bathroom with shower (Halden prison)
Different side
Some of the older cells in Oslo prison (botsen prison)
Banksy did some artwork in the yard (Halden prison)
Chilling with some games with the staff (Halden)
The apartment prisoners get to use when they have sleepover visits from family
Common room with a small kitchen for snacks etc
Another chill out spot. We belive that treating people with respect and normalizing the situation in prison will make it easier to integrate with society again when released
The boys chilling out.
A inmate gets some help during art class. In Norway we try to keep 50/50 men and women in staff to diffuse tension that might occur in a all male prison.
I love the dude in the back just chilling with his shorts.
Out in the yard. The staff usually join in the game and fun. They are also very seldom armed with anything. I tried to Google it, but I don't think it's been anyone killed in a Norwegian prison since the 70s.
A personal trainer / therapist is offered once a week. A lot of the inmates with aggressive tendencies have easier to open up and talk while blowing off steam during workouts
Breakfasts time. Every block got its own kitchen, living room, lounge and yard. This is to keep smaller populations that goes well together and prevent fights.
I'm not sure if staff or inmates are more into the game. It's important for staff to hang out with the inmates to establish trust that goes both ways. Treat people with dignity and they treat you with respect.
Workshop class.
Not the best stocked library, but decent non the less.
Morning routines and hygiene is important stuff
The prison canteen where food is made by staff and inmates. They all eat the same food.
Where the magic happens.
Some inmates work on stuff like repairing and maintaining the police cars. They can also get education and important knowledge that will help them get jobs while outside.
Prison toothfairy
Or you can start a prison band!
Staffroom
Some chill out spot. Think this won a architect award, personally I find the colours a bit depressing
Some old cell in Sarpsborg prison I think.
Old picture, but this is a "close to release" cell for the inmates who soon is let out. This is used to acclimatise them and give a more sense of normal housing they will face when released.
That sofa looks damn comfy.
This is a inmate with a "inmate assistant ", this is volunteers who hang out with prisoners that got a hard time coping. It's both therapeutical, prevents depression and suicide and a nice way to meet a friend. These "assistants" usually helps the inmates get used to the outside world as well when they are released.
Some of the older cells
This is bastøy (bastoy) min security prison. It's located on an island and don't got any fences or bars. Prisoners are allowed to roam free during the day. Some tries to escape a few times, but it's a pretty long swim.
Most of them just chill out.
Cat tax.
The philosophy in Norwegian prisons are that even though stripped of your freedom, you are still a human and will be treated with the same respect and dignity as those on the outside. You have the same rights as any other citizen, and this is just a period of your life and our goal is to rehabilitate and help you back into society.
It's a big system that helps with finding a job, housing, therapy and education.
And I think this way of treating people is why we have some of the world's lowest relapse rate.
There are about 4500 prisoners in Norwegian prisons at any time, both for shorter and longer stays.
I'm not saying we are perfect in any way, and there are fights, drugs etc in our prisons too, but I think we are on the right path. Keep people out of prison not in them.
Sorry for potato English
Tl;dnr: treat people nice and give opportunity to change
FP edit :
So nice to see so many liked the post!!
Is this where i ask for things? well, if any are in a position to hire people, give a ex inmate a chance! Let them earn a living, support their famillies. I promise fewer will go back to crime.
Also, im a bit worried by collage living situations in the US, by the looks of the comments.
HitlersWaffles
Quick question; is this for all prisoners? Like from murderers to muggers? Or is it for like a certain level of crime?
nortotron
This is a wonderful post. Thanks for sharing. A very important perspective. Thanks so much.
potentiallyunsafe
Those cells are nice than American College dorms
shrouwoods
This prison exceeds EVERY American dorm I have ever been in, most studio apartments, ALL government housing....for real....
Ithoughtofacleverusernamenowitsgone
1) prison band. Sounds less fun than prison break, but I'd watch it. 2) +1 for Norge.
leroy666
Was a time when U.S. could gone this route, but that ship's sailedWhere's the right wing railing about Damned Socialists? Kinda miss it.
TheUglyGuy
Looks pretty racially /culturally homogeneous. Also no gang tats.
Captainclickbait
Yeah we don't separate by race or any like that. Also I think we only got 2-3 gangs in the country + some bikers.
Soddo
Til after i blow my retirement on hookers and blow im moving to norway!
DJasperProbincruxtheThird
I've said it many times, this would never work here because our cultures are totally different. You can't just transplant like that
kukupuff
I love your potato English, you did a great job. Very interesting, thank you!
RadmanTheWise
That cell in Sarpsborg looks a lot like the cabins I get at work. It's a ship with 20K containers on it, you get a cell smaller than one box
RadmanTheWise
I mean the one that's labelled "older cell".
xpr1dex
Looks like those prisoners were put through hell. See all that IKEA furniture they had to assemble.
morgan0073
It just not the same without the anal rape and living in fear of your life.
EzraFell
Good to know that I can always go to Norway and get my life back on track by committing a heinous crime.
BillyHoooyle
The biggest reservation I have is that they're not paying to stay there, why would they not want to stay inside? Because they're taught 1/2
BillyHoooyle
That what they did was wrong? They probably live better in there than they would when they get out. Rehab is good, but punishment isn't bad
Salpinus
Not all our prisons look like this, trust me. Halden prison is the most modern. Rest of them are old and worn. Same concepts apply tho
Captainclickbait
Our view is that being stripped of your freedom is punishment. And they get great help to get jobs and housing when they get out, 1/2
Captainclickbait
So they can support their family's or them self. Most places got no problem with hiring ex inmates
BillyHoooyle
Well that part is great! I think ex cons need to not be punished after they served time
ThisMayBeMyLastPost
Now make a post about homes for the elderly in Norway...
xoltx
yeah #eldrehjem
paulpounder
It's easy to have that kind of prison when the population is small but here in the US we have a huge prison population full of assholes.
KarlaAnne
Needs more Varg. Please.
Captainclickbait
He's out.. think he moved to Sweden
NinjaBeans
This was fascinating, thanks OP. +1
sureasyourebornyourenevergoingtoseenounicorn
Ok, but you're never going to have a great television drama about the horrific human rights violations with that humane treatment.
Captainclickbait
That's true :( we do have survivor and big brother though..
sureasyourebornyourenevergoingtoseenounicorn
I jest, it's an amazing approach and one I desperately wish the US would take.
IreallyMGur
Anyone remember Oz ?
GyroPunk
And guess what, it works, in Norway the amount of repeat offenders is at the high end near 20% , in the us it averages out to 77%.
TheTittyLicker
I wonder how many people commit crimes to get into prison there
Captainclickbait
A fair amount..
Salpinus
Only one Russian neo nazi that I've heard of. You get better stuff on the outside here after all...
bluesmcgroove
That looks awesome...Can I...Can I go to prison there? Loving in America is kinda shitty
RenaissanceFaireMan
All you need is love.
bluesmcgroove
Living. Damned cell phone
saiaku
As a norwegian I honestly think our prison system is such bullshit. Their cells are nicer than many student dorms.
BaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaBATMAN
As another Norwegian, the loss of freedom is the punishment, we don't have to treat them like scum. And if we don't, they reoffend less.
thelonepig
If someone killed my loved one then spent the next decade living better than many Americans, I'd be a little irritated.
Slashenaar
Revenge breeds revenge and violence breeds violence, a community must be better than any offender.
GiveMeAgoddamnUsername
It would be great to have something similar in the US, or at least inspired by it. I think that we'd have a hard time funding so much, tho.
xoltx
It's actualy an american prison system/way of thinking that Norway adopted, but i guess the US government didn't implement it.
Captainclickbait
Yeah, I can see that. But as the evil socialists we are , it's OK to use tax money on helping people to get back to society :')
TheyreGoodDogsBront
*oil money
Salpinus
- Is a quarter if the national budget. The rest is taxes etc
BeardicPerformance
I feel like Norways hardest criminals are a lot less hard than America's hardest criminals... maybe that's a product of culture, but...
newat
at least one is: Anders Behring Breivik
ErrareHumanumEww
Thats true. We dont have the challenges or the poverty that shapes the worst.
OldmanSerious
maybe it's a product of being incarcerated in America's prisons that makes them so hardened. Overcrowding and horrible conditions will do it
eion85
I think some of that is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
nominaltoactual2
They do have a Hells Angel's chapter in Oslo.
peachesforme
and then there is Anders Brevik who murdered like 80 children. But no they are not as hardcore as americans
BeardicPerformance
I feel like there's a difference between a hardened criminal culturally conditioned to violence and a psychopathic killer.
BeardicPerformance
There are American criminals that can and will kill a MFer with the stuff provided in those cells.
Captainclickbait
Hehe we have had prisoners wondering why they got free access to knifes and stuff.. but then again, still no Murders
icantbelievemynamewastaken
Yeah, but they mention that these are minimum security. Probably non violent offenders.
Captainclickbait
The pictures from Halden prison is max security
icantbelievemynamewastaken
I corrected myself! But seriously, what kind of criminals are housed there
icantbelievemynamewastaken
Ok fine. That's only the second one. I wonder what Norway's hardest crims get up to.
BaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaBATMAN
Would be no need to do that unless there was another American criminal in there too.
BeardicPerformance
Or a guard. Or an innocent bystander. Or a kid. Our society is frighteningly violent.
BaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaBATMAN
:\
Captainclickbait
I think so too. We have very few murders and our whole culture kinda frown upon being thugs and gangsters. + high social benefits
causality
I'd be interested in norway taking a small group of American prisoners and seeing how their repeat offender rate compares.
Captainclickbait
That would actually be a great study!
BeardicPerformance
Yeah. I wish the US was more like that, but until then...
JohnSmithIncognito
Thug life
SweetTeaYankee
Unfortunately in America, gangsters and criminals are often idolized, become role models for kids.
reyfufurulesall
So true. And if you point that out as a negative, you get called racist. Seriously, it's happened to me several times.
reyfufurulesall
The specific argument was that "gangster" and "thug" are racially charged words apparently. (now THAT idea, I'd say is a racist one)
dancingbelly81
Are they privately owned and operated or are they government run?
Captainclickbait
I did a fast check and they are thinking about letting private contractors build prisons that's run by the government for short term -1 yr
Captainclickbait
No private prisons are allowed in norway, so yes, it's government owned.
dancingbelly81
Very interesting. Norway sounds like a lovely place. I would lovr to visit it someday.
Captainclickbait
We'd love to have you I'm sure :)
SaraNayde
Hoe. Lee. FUUUCK. That's luxury living, IMO. *books flight to Norway while plotting dastardly criminal deeds*
RenaissanceFaireMan
How many people in the US have much worse living conditions, while working?
BeardicPerformance
Than what's shown in these pictures? Most.
SaraNayde
Me, for one. Pretty much everyone else I know, for two.
RenaissanceFaireMan
Homeless people sometimes commit crimes to live in a US prison...damn, they dumb.
SaraNayde
But for a lot, having a climate controlled environment, a bed, and 3 meals a day is far more than they have living on the streets, sooo...
WakeMeUpB4UpostPost
They live better than I do...
iDrinkDrano
You also haven't made the mistakes they have that require this kind of emotional rehab.
iDrinkDrano
...I think
Captainclickbait
They live pretty decent I guess, but I still wouldn't trade it for my freedom to go out when I want and grab a pint.
SaraNayde
Really? I'm an alcoholic, but I'd give up my "freedom" to be that level of pampered.
Ruhig
I think that's easy to say until you experience it.
SaraNayde
Probably easy to say after you've experienced it too.
InsistYouDesist
thats why their recidivism rates are so low...
nerdyvet
Out of curiosity, what is the rate of repeat offenders? Has it changed since prisons like these were the norm?
Captainclickbait
20% on medium crime and up to 60% on small crime like theft (often done bc drug addiction). And that's after our crime has sky rocketed 1/2
Captainclickbait
The last 20 years. It was much lower before. But it goes hand in hand with society growth and drugs. Most are in 1-5 yrs. Very few 10+
nerdyvet
Thank you for knowledge!
Captainclickbait
Thanks for asking :)
