Last winter I didn't have much going on in the way of work, so decided to take off to Iceland for a month. It was a long cold lonely road, but I have never seen such a beautiful place. Every 10 minutes I would see something amazing and worth a photograph, and I came home with more than 500 images to add to my portfolio. This is the first round of my favorites.

This is the classical shot of Iceland, probably the first place everyone goes, Kirkjufell, or Church Mountain.

Got soaked on this one

One of Iceland's least visited falls which I found hard to believe, but it was in a pretty remote part of the eastern fjords.

Frozen Dettifoss

Had to put on my snowshoes for this top one, as I got caught in a blizzard near Akureyri. These railings were covered in icicles a foot thick, as the mist from Europe's largest waterfall were right beneath them.

Colorful Night in Namaskard

The orange glow of the eruption of Bardarbunga Volcano on the horizon, the northern lights high above and fumaroles in the geothermal area of Namaskard.

Silica Rich Pool

I had to hike 25 miles to get to this area of concentrated thermal features in the Icelandic interior. For some reason, I decided to save some scratch and not get a 4X4, so I got stuck on the trail trying to drive here. But I wasn't going to let that stop me...

Out on a Ledge

In Iceland's northern most tip, high above the Arctic Circle, hanging out on a cliff of Hornstrandir, where the only thing north is the ice cap.

Iceberg Beach

Near the famous Jokulsarlon, icebergs are constantly jumbled and tumbled on a black sand beach.

Europe's Largest Waterfall

Little pillows of snow accumulated after a blizzard hit at Dettifoss.

Standing in Awe

This was the first time I've ever seen the northern lights, I couldn't believe how fast they dance across the sky, no image or video I've ever seen (or taken myself for that matter) can do justice to how beautiful and awe inspiring it is to witness them for yourself.... Go!!!!

Frozen Macroscape

Bubbles frozen on the surface of a glacial lagoon.

A Band of Horses

These majestic beautiful creatures were everywhere and super friendly, with their famous rock star manes.

The Blue Lagoon

Even cooler in my eyes than the famous Blue Lagoon were these nearby silica rich streams running through an ancient lava field.

Interstellar Set

If this looks vaguely familiar, its because its one of the glaciers that Interstellar was filmed on.

BA 64

An old fishing trawler ran aground in the east fjords, a nice glow of light pollution with the northern lights trying to peak through the clouds.

From Inside the the Glacier

I was roaming around glacial caves under Fjalljokull and found this little window looking out onto the calving face of the glacier.

Cotton Candy Sunrise

Jokulsarlon is a large glacial lagoon filled with icebergs breaking off from the glaciers in Vatnajokull National Park.

The Heart of the Glacier

One of the coolest places I've ever encountered, sometimes it pays to just walk off into the wilderness..

I'm leaving for Iceland in 11 hours. Stumbled across this, really beautiful photos.

As an Icelander...something does not add up in this story.

Just stunning. Beautiful, beautiful photography. My daughter plans to visit Iceland next year. What an astonishing time she'll have.

They look like images from no man's sky.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Screenshots from the witcher. Thanks @op

How on earth did you afford Iceland for a whole month?. I went for 8 days, slept in a van and ate very little. Amazing, but so so expensive.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was, but I sell my prints so was banking on making my money back on the back end.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@OP, you added 500 to your portfolio. how many pictures did you actually take though?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just shy of 12,000 digital, and 24 rolls of 220 film

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Alot of people get disappointed when they see the northern lights for the first time because it sure aint like these pictures.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These are beyond amazing. Your captures are awe inspiring and surreal. Your compositions and your ability to capture the "light" is a gift.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm going in 3 weeks. I too will post in Iceland photo dump but it won't be 4k

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP What was your budget for this trip? And what kind of equipment and settings did you use to capture in low light?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dude don't tell people to wander into the wilderness in Iceland, that's how you die.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, had a couple of close calls, I don't recommend ice caves on a warm day

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, No Man's Sky looks even better than I thought

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#1 Heaven Shall Burn anyone?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#3 looks like a badly detailed videogame.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It looks like Oblivion. Modded somehow.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's snow falling lit by my flashlight. Was an accidental effect but a happy one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So you went to Skyrim?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Am I the only one who thought it was an album with 4000 photos?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i live in Iceland and I can confirm that at least half of these are real.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lucky you, I seriously want to move there. Most beautiful place I've ever been..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ye the only bad thing is that were ALL afraid of accidental inbreeding...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but there's an app for that right?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I lived in Alaska for 7 years and I never got tired of the Northern Lights, seriously people put it on your bucket list. Great pics!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I'm going to Alaska this winter just to see some more :) Thanks!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Iceland is the only country that makes me feel like I'm on a completely different planet.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

here, add this to your list http://www.viralforest.com/alien-looking-place-earth/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That place has been on my bucket list for ages!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dot

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op are you a professional photographer? Are there other places we can see your work?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Trying to be! I'm on IG @f64andbethere, or my website is garretsuhrie.com

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whelp, looks like that was stupid question... But I was just curious since you didn't have other posts on Imgur. Love your work!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are stunning, Fuck it, I'm going.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*experience not typical, results may vary.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You won't regret it!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its literally 3 hours away so seems ridiculous not to.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op seriously, these pictures are fucking magnificent

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you kindly. I have 100's more from this trip so I'm going to put together a few more posts soon!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cotton candy sunrise is unreal. Looking forward to them!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aren't these 2.6K images?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it? They're 4000px on the long side, is that not 4k? Apologies if Im a dummy

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never mind, that's me - I just checked and while 1K meant 1K vertical, it looks like the standard was switched to horizontal for some reason

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What kind of camera do you shoot on?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nikon D800 is my main squeeze, but I still shoot a bunch of film cameras too, Hassie 500 and Mamiya 67ii, Sony A7S for timelapsy stuff..

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#3 is proof that Skyrim mods are getting better and better.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Oblivion looks like that, Skyrim not really.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It really is quite a bit more like Skyrim, though. Oblivion was vibrant, Skyrim dull, and far snowier than Cyrodiil at any rate.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True, but icy in the same way (As the picture is). The railings look taken straight from the Jerall mountains areas, Bruma or thereabouts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's fair; Though remember that those walls on the road are in high abundance in Skyrim too, just mostly in ruins.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes but not the same glossy texture. If you can't tell, I'm *really' good with wordsdand descriptions...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some of this stuff looks really fake, the third one looks like a graphics mod for Skyrim

9 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 7

This skyrim mods are getting out of hands

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

this fucking comment, every fucking time someone makes a landscape post someone in the comments has to mention Skyrim.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

not fake, just heavy editing probably https://photoartmag.com/2015/04/17/nocturnal-photography-garret-suhrie/

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The question is wether op is this person in the magazine, if not then op is a fucking thief.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

OP's not a thief, that's me.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To me it just feels like something near Solitude, like you go down the hills out of the reach and go left for solitude

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Absolutely amazing! Can't believe how great photos you got in just a month

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And this is just the tip of the iceberg (sorry for stupid pun). I'll put up another post soon

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks! Yeah, it was definitely the most productive and prolific adventure I've had yet!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Amazing stuff! Thanks for the new wallpapers

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks! My pleasure

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you do any processing on the pictures, photoshop or similar?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A bit here and there, not much though, for the most part its just that colorful and diverse a place

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A colleague of mine went there last April, he also had a ton of amazing pictures. He also said the trip, and 'living' there, were expensive

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Half of this shit looks computer generated

9 years ago | Likes 168 Dislikes 6

Yes I do these kind of pictures myself and many of these are over worked to the point where they look artificial. Especially pic nr2.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can tell you honestly (and I would be happy to put up a screen shot of the RAW file, there is no post done to #2 save color correction.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey. Go for it. Ill take a look at it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But these are not computer generated

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There usually is some sort of post processing that has to be done in Adobe Lightroom and / or Photoshop that simply "fixes" the image

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do kinda agree, there is a point to where it doesn't look natural

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but I do this myself alot and many of these pictures are over worked to the point where they look artificial.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#3 doesn't even look particularly advanced. It's like some old voxel engine.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And I did do a little compositing of a few tries

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#3 is a 5 minute exposure where I used a flashlight to light the night scene, and then a speed light to "freeze" the falling snow.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Neat. To be clear I wasn't knocking the photography, it's just the other worldly lighting + lumpy snow shapes makes for a game-engine look.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

heres the originals from 2015 https://photoartmag.com/2015/04/17/nocturnal-photography-garret-suhrie/ with photographer interview

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

all real but some may be more heavily edited than others

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, @op, are you Garret Suhrie or are you a fucking wannabe, disgusting thief?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

I am Garret, sorry for the confusion, this is just the name I use for IG

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's not, Iceland's just awesome. Really didn't do much in post..

You need to come up north, cause that is the real deal!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Going there next month. This makes me more excited.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL Iceland is in the matrix. coo

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been and absolutely loved it. Your photos are amazing!!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

#3 looks computer rendered to me, but the others are nice

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

No tonemapping? You must either have a Nikon D800/810 or a Sony AR7 II.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No Canon love?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

D800

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ditto. :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Love your work! And user name! How are you getting yourself in some of these? The distance seems too far for a remote or timer.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Vello remote trigger, or setting it up to just keep taking exposures while I run to where I need to be

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Great, thanks! I'd never thought of setting it up for continuous shooting, ha:)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, figured that one out after one too many frustrating times the remote was too far to work, haha

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You didn't do anything at all since they're not even your pictures http://www.purephoto.com/garretsuhrie/gallery/8339

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I am Garret Suhrie.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well then sorry. You said "last winter" and looking online those pictures date of 2014.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, yeah, guess I worded that poorly. I was thinking the winter of '15, but yeah, was there Oct. '14. The years all run together...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is just my name I use for Instagram and Imgur.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0
