I have massive respect for the Polish, surviving Nazi Germany then Soviet Russia, perfect example of frying pan into the fire.

My grandpa was Polish, Russian, Ukranian, and Czech. I didn't realize his ancestors barely had to travel to have all these nationalities.

When you're in the middle of the three largest empires at the time, you're going to have a bad time.

You know you’re fucked when your country gets renamed ‘The Deluge’

Here's a pro tip: don't make features blue on a map unless they represent water.

Incredible history. Love the country, but politically worrisome right now. Be great Poland!

Is there one for before 1635? I imagine it was pretty traumatic to get to that point for the Polish and otherwise.

When i saw Deluge, I imagined a wave of Russians stampeding

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I have no idea what was meant by that

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Actually it was the Swedish empire this time. Poland has been invaded a lot. I read the name means "border land", but i think that's wrong

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yup, the name simply means 'Land of Poles', derived from the tribe of Polans, who lived in today's western Poland.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're thinking of Ukraine, which is why it's traditionally had 'the' before it in English. 'The Borderlands' => 'the Ukraine.'

I like how Poland moved west 300 miles.

Joesef Stalin's idea. He wanted to keep the land he conquered in 1939, so he deleted three major German territories and gave them to Poland.

Does this mean that Belarus, Latvia, etc only have 27 years?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fun fact, the modern Polish borders were drawn according the borders of the lands ruled by the Piast dynasty, the first Polish state. 1/2

This gif does not includes that state however. It existed in the 10th and 11th centuries.

Is there a tl;dr? Ukraine has some of the best soil on Earth, correct?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

both books are about what happened in Poland and Ukraine during WW2. Less about farming and more about mass murder.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

tl;dr would be NAZIs and Communist work together to kill as many people possible.

Ukraine has changed hands/been invaded a lot, too. Little defensible territory, mostly agrarian farmers sitting at a Europe/Asia crossroads.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

sucks when you are literally a border land between anything and Russia

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The border between Europe and Asia is far far away at the Ural mountains
