Hard-boiled penguin eggs

Hard-Boiled Penguin Eggs

These are specifically Gentoo penguin eggs and are eaten in the Falkland Islands near Argentina where these penguins nest. Apparently the taste is quite strongly fishy, probably from the birds’ diet. (Sauce: malformalady)

Odd....I can't fathom eating a penguin egg - fried or boiled or whatever, yet I have no issues eating Chinese thousand year old eggs.

TIL: Gentoo is more than just a Linux distro...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The Gentoo penguin is the fastest penguin species and the namesake of the Gentoo Linux distribution.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Makes me wonder if Gentoo is just a pun off the Linux logo.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Probably from the Penguins diet" ?? So this individual is leaving a small window open for something else causing this fishy taste, hmmm

Science of imgur isn't anything like science of tumblr

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Indeed. No where near the oppression of imgur science.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

WTF, they look nothing like silicon.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Pretty sure he means the clear part not the yellow part.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was making a joke about it being silicone, not silicon.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

zoom straight over my head

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok chik egg whites consist >12 proteins. They unwind and refract light when cooked. They also freeze(problm for antarctic birds) Peng eggs<

9 years ago | Likes 171 Dislikes 2

>may have(I never studied peng eggs) more fatts in the white to prevent freezing

9 years ago | Likes 154 Dislikes 1

*fats

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They might also contain a high amount of oils. I doubt they are high in saturated fats since that would coagulate at low temps.

9 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 0

I wanted to say lipid but I also wanted to be understood :-/

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 3

My guess is the oil theses birds are on islands that don't go below -5°C which isnt all that cold when compared to other penguins.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But birds have to keep their eggs way above freezing so my theory is somewhat bunky. I still think theyre more oily tho

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But fats also have a higher insulation value, no?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Perhaps anti-freeze proteins instead?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's what I would assume. Either total protein content is low or very thermo-stable.

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

thank you sciency person

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Seconded :) Very informative.

What kind of a monster eats penguin eggs.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 7

Right? Like... aren't they fertilized?

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Same as chicken eggs unless this species has population issues (as many do). Also, if the fetus is so small you cant see it who gives af.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What kind of monster eats chikens eggs?

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 9

Chicken eggs don't have fetuses

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 5

Not sure if im getting baited or you dont know how eggs work.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 10

Not sure if you know how hens work dude.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

The only reason store brought eggs are fertile is because the layers are rarely in contact with roosters.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

do YOU not know how eggs work?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

But they can, and its not uncommon in other parts of the world to eat the unhatched chicken fetus (not looking to continue just info drop)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I know, I grew up on a small farm. Gross. But it's weird some adults think their eating scrambled chicks.
