Wear safety goggles

Repost from a while back, but this still scares the crap out of me.

WOAH! First time on FP! I knew I could do better than 4 updoots. Cheers guys!

Carol didn't wear her safety glasses. Now she doesn't need them

Sweet 'stache!

I normally downvote reposts, but post like this could literally save lives by spreading awareness so I'll give it a go +1

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I wear a pair when I ride my mt. bike home from work. Riding into sun, a new twig from a tree wasn't visible and heard it tink off left side

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My brother once poked himself in the eye with his safety glasses while putting them on.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You'll never be a pirate!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Had a picture at my base of much the same thing, except it was my buddy with a shrapnel in his glasses.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Weight on the word safety since they don't shatter but deform. Just any glasses won't do.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When I shoot sporting clays everyone has to wear glasses. One time i wasn't even shooting and a piece of a bird hit me in the eye. i was ok

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nobody needs glasses when I shoot trap, because I'm fucking awful at it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah, just squint really hard and it'll have bounced off.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seriously, I wear glasses over my glasses. Safety first!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually, with grinders I suggest a face shield.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My mom is blind and spent years teaching newly blinded adults how to survive. It's a life you don't want. Always wear the gear.

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Osha actually says wear a full face shield with a grinder. I was wearing safety glasses when that happened.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wear both

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Grindr is a dangerous site. Praise God.

I remember this same comment having a little over 8000 points the last time this was reposted

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We don't need your alternative facts! those specs were a fashion choice dammit.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah. I'll just take my safety squints and move on.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Almost. But not quite.

Keep quite noisy? Like, not too noisy, but quite noisy

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Comments that get upvotes in posts are always repeated in reposts for upvotes.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yet we still hear about preventable injuries so obviously people have to be reminded.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Suits of armor exist for a reason

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Check disc for cracks and always check your RPM

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes, especially if it's a shop tool. You don't know what kind of dipshit used it last

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or just put a guard on the grinder, but really preferably both.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They make us wear face shields because what if that was a couple inches off?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I wear safety glasses under my shield. I hate cutting discs.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You are supposed to. They aren't good at keeping grinding dust out.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Grinder disk. Had no idea these things exploded so easy

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

9 years ago (deleted Feb 18, 2017 1:10 PM) | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

They are not hardened.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

They don't but the disk is exposed making it easy to damage it and when it cracks, the high RPM do the rest.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Basically always use the proper disc for the job (cutting for cutting, grinding for grinding), keep rpms within specs, and don't push (1)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

with a lot of pressure to go faster. Let the weight of the machine do the work. Do all that and you'll be fine. Still wear gear though. (2)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, this is not a grinding disk but a cutting disk. It's when people are using them to grind they gets damaged and cracks.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Cutting disk for a grinder tho right?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The tool is called an angle grinder, but the disk is a cutting disk. When you use a cutting disk to grind, it bends and then shatters.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

been in the engineering industry since I was 17 grinding disks only explode if you're using them incorrectly.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then you should know that the disk in the picture is not a grinding disk but a cutting disk.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Both explode with incorrect use

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This reminds me that back in school, they didn't have enough for everyone in the class. Myself and 2 others were told that we didn't (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

need them because we wore glasses. (2/2)

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I was happy when my shop class made people wear them even if they had glasses. No matter how much they bitched

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Safety glasses my ass. In that shop I'd wear a ballistic mask

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

sometimes impossible (2)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

depends on the ballistic mask, you'd be surprised about how much kevlar doesn't stop

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

sometimes you can't wear full face masks for the task. I wear full face masks with wire wheel brushes, but with a cutting wheel it's (1)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Checking your tools before use isn't a bad idea either those discs normally show hints before they go

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't say "normally", but still a good idea.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What sort of hints? I put a brand new disc on my grinder and the first cut it exploded. I'd like to know what to look for in the future.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cracks, they often have a use by date, check its totally flat, and store them flat and not with anything heavy on them etc.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would imagine that faulty discs and heavily worn discs might be different beasts, but eh--I don't know much.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What kind of disc is this?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been working with tools like this for over 20 yrs. NEVER once had a disc just "fly apart". Improper use causes this.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Same here, and I've launched an angle grinder a few feet because a pipe closed up on it. (was not a good setup in any way)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Always make sure the disk RPM is suitable for the RPM of the tool.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is key

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Improper use is one of the risks of power tools.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've never seen an angle grinder disk that thin before.. Sure looks like a vertical cut-off to me

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably had it going full tilt and was pushing the cut through.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The problem is when you share tools. Much like sharing lab space:I'm safe, but the person next to me might be an idiot. So I always wear PPE.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Working as an engineer, yes always wear safety glasses even if they look stupid

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Lmao as a millwright i have to give you shit. Engineers don't do anything even remotely dangerous

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

So I basically play with robotic arms all day and idiot proof the shop for the operators

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mechatonic engineer who builds wires and programs processes for automating cnc's, I don't have a desk I have a bench

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Well I'm a "stationary engineer", but it's not a traditional "engineering" discipline. I just assumed you're a traditional engineer

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah I work with all the R&D techs but it's really not a traditional engineering position

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Can't say I wear safety glasses for wiring. Jury rigging motors, on the other hand.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of the wiring is done around running machinery so there's always a possibility for me

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

True, I wear my glasses if I'm wiring a running machine.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's why most workplaces (at least the ones in Australia) require a full face mask when using angle grinders.

9 years ago | Likes 277 Dislikes 0

I like the full face mask better than glasses/goggles- feels more safe and I can get right in there to see details as I cut/shape/grind...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read that as angle gingers and was really confused for a second

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's why we call em death wheels in the US

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

safety squint mate. 60% of the time it works every time

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Except I've never seen anyone at all ever use one

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

face shields have a significantly lower ballistic rating than glasses, although slowing the projectile down certainly doesn't hurt.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

many Canadian sites require face mask for angle grinding, chop sawing, or any spark creating disc cutter.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most sites I've worked at require double protection. So safety glasses and a face shield.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I always wear glasses with the mask. shit tends to bounce around

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Safety glasses are implied because there is never a reason you're allowed to removed them. Double wrap them peepers

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's crazy. I never imagined a blade could shatter like that. Guess I'll go get a mask now...glasses ain't gonna settle my nopes now...

9 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 0

They usually break when they have been dropped on the blade and it cracks.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're also supposed to wear the face mask with angle grinders to avoid sparks going into you're eyes

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Goggles work but I find shields make it way worse. Sparks just bounce around between your face and the plastic :/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's why you're supposed to wear goggles underneath the shields

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As someone who has had a metal shard from angle grinding removed from my cornea, I highly recommend safety glasses.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

You are supposed to wear safety glasses under most types of face shields (including welding hoods) because stuff gets under them.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ive seen a .5 inch thick grinding wheel explode on a bench grinder. Its not pretty and its terrifying

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

seen a wheel violently explode on a surface grinder from some dipshit slamming it into the table. Made the 45 year old man cry.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More or less what happened. Apprentice didn't use the right wheel to clearance a 2inch endmill and was way too aggressive with it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've busted a couple. Usually it happens if you've twisted the grinder on accident, but could get a bunk disc, too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do knife making, and tend to use glasses with a respirator. Not sure how sturdy the respirator is, but my face is mostly covered.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a cutoff wheel, not a grinder wheel. And I would hazard a guess this person was using a cutoff wheel as a grinder and it exploded.

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

Looks like a 4 1/2 cutoff wheel, often used on an angle grinder. People I've worked with normally just call all of them "grinder wheels" >

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>> just because they go on a grinder. Not "correct", but that could be the case here.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've had cutoff wheels on angle grinders disintegrate while cutting plate steel. Super scary.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In my experience cutoff wheels break pretty easy if they're deep in a cut and the operator twists the tool a little, flexing the wheel. (1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(2/2) Only took me 2 to learn why it broke and not to do any twist ever again

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Without the guard with his face in-plane with the wheel.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or... walking near an idiot.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can avoid so many accidents by not being in plane with the wheel.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you don't believe take an osha motorized equipment cert course. They make you watch all kinds of video's and pictures

9 years ago | Likes 958 Dislikes 6

or become a mortician and see them first hand.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z77oztO6UQ (german, but does actually have humor)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seconded. The best bit is where the guy does not suffer hearing damage from the death screams because he is wearing proper ear protection.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had my major in Process Technology, saw all sorts of videos about how one mistake can cost lives.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You think those are bad, you should see Army CLS slides. Ever seen what happens to a human head when it hits a helicopter rotor?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What am I looking at in the first picture?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*videos

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Can't I just read the safety guidelines and agree to comply? Why do I have to look at gore to understand the gravity?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ugh, I had to take a toned down one in high school for shop class. We "got" to watch a complete eye surgery for removing a share of metal.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was shown at my machining apprenticeship an old lathe spindle with some guys hair/scalp wrapped round it. That scared me. Still does.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I work with fiber optic cable. Hair strand sized glass. If a piece goes into your eye... no coming back from that.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Degloving pics give me the heebiegeebis, and press brake accidents give me nightmares

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This guy is a certified idiot. Goggles and a face mask when operating with a cutting disc if that was one inch lower......

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want horror stories, ask nurses who worked in the ER. I'll never forget the stories my mom told me. *shivers*

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cool. I'm googling that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Always annoy me when I hear "Health and safety gone mad!" Like yeah, people are trying to survive the best they can.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The videos like that but for safe driving (Red Highway or something) are part of what made me take to get my Drivers License. I was 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

immensely aware of the fact that I was behind the wheel of a 2-ton killing machine if I didn't do it just right. Caused me to fuck up. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

...correct me if I'm wrong, but i thought Germany was pretty no-no about shit like gore in their media. How is this okay to them lol

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

haha! Nah, if it's clearly for comedy then it's OK

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

YES! I was NO JOKE shown this when I took my forklift drivers license.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Germany is scary

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No safety glasses?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If only those guys had been wearing their safety glasses!

I was looking for this comment

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was a safety coordinator for a manufacturing plant. The stuff I had to watch and see up close is beyond fucked. Stay safe kids.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I got to watch an actual decapitation in my high school drivers ed class. Public school! But y'know, I am a cautious driver now. :U

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Degloving. That is all.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OMG, my sister is a nurse, and she told me what that was. Horrible!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I saw a guy get engulfed in a fireball working on an electrical panel. Forgot to cut off the main breaker.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Arc flash is no joke

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I only work with stuff up to 415v, but it still scares the crap out of me what could happen. My Fluke Pen is always in my pocket to check.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

....Jesus. .. was he okay?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Depends. They're supposed to wear fire resistant clothing & face shields. Still probably blew out his ears.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, Jesus is not okay. Heard he got hurt in an accident involving nails. Safety precautions matter.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

No he was not.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I work at a hardware store/warehouse. Can confirm. They even had a 'horrors of forklifts' video we had to watch.

9 years ago | Likes 277 Dislikes 0

At least an anecdote.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They make you watch real life shots of people being maimed and killed in equipment accidents

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gross.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an emt I would probably be a little to excited watching those videos.....

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was raised by a nurse, I saw worse than some of the video's on myself and never went to the er

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We just had a forklift any key would start. Literally everyone used it with no training.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can we get sauce? How horrible can a forklift be?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Mine wasn't just forklift, it was safety in general. Like what an eye looks like when it takes a dropped screw dead center

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Eye eye eye" - guy in the video, probably

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I seent it!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 2

Probably because the off brand detergent wouldn't get the stains out of his underpants

9 years ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah I'm aroused by those videos too

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I totally knew this was the reason before the other guy asked and I read your comment confirming it. I didn't have any questions at all. ;)

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If you do an OSHA 30 as an electrician you get to watch videos of people literally cook (like a hotdog) from high voltage.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it sad that my first thought wasn't "That's horrifying" but "Wouldn't that cause a short circuit that would cut off power to cameras?"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You would think, but safety mechanisms aren't always in place in every country.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also to add, it does not take much to kill a human. Even with functional breakers you can still die from a short.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it sad that I was more concerned with how they got the footage during a power outage than the victim's health? I feel like it's sad.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can die quicker than the breaker can trip

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had the same thing happen to me once. The disk literally exploded. Pretty big chunk bounced off my glasses. Had to change underwear after.

9 years ago | Likes 115 Dislikes 1

That's what cutoff wheels do when they fail.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Had a large sharp shard of PVC eject from a miter saw and bounced square off the safety glasses. Thankful I was wearing them!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not a bad idea to change your underwear every now and then even if this doesn't happen.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You might consider wearing rubber safety underwear

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Invest in a good old fashion Cod piece

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shit maybe lol

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Happened to a friend but the disk hit him in the groin. He said his balls were black and blue for weeks.

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

guess it gave him a serious case of blue balls

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

yep. That is a perfect reaction gif for that.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The most likely cause is too much friction applied the face of the disc, cracks, or too much rpm.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Well and was a cheap ass disc i bought from walmart

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Centrifugal force can expand a crack. Add some friction on the edge and it looks like the disc peels apart in slo-mo. Like a tire blowout.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't buy anything from Walmart that regular goes over 60rpm.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd be iffy over 2rpm

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cracks probably. I was a safety guy. One of the things nobody does is check if the rpm of tool matches the disc or for cracks.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This random comment chain has been surprisingly educational. Ty safety man

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As a safety man did you have to do the dance of your people?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Indeed
