I think I'm going to die. How the hell do you focus on huge research papers for ALL DAY?

Sending love to all you graduate/master's/doctoral candidates out there. Good luck, y'all.

I just finished a 15 page research paper too! It's 3 am now.. I should sleep..

I feel like life was a little easier when it was fewer big projects. Now it's all the nitty gritty Adulting that gets me

Ritalin. Or in American ca I think adderall

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First off, I always upvote Gillian Jacobs. Second, hang in there -- it's TOTALLY worth it. I had 3 days off in 1 year. Doubled my pay.

Start off with your sources in finding information, and work with small chunks. I use the website called habitica to help the process

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Im 1000 words in. Off work tomorrow and plab to do 4000

50 minutes at a time. And let the 10 minutes be fresh air/snack. Not web surfing/game/e-mail. Let it be something you can get away from.

I mean, I completely rewrote mine three times in as many months until I knew the data said what it said and I didn't hate every word.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My strategy is to start early and only work on small chunks at a time. I write the part of the paper that is foremost in my mind that 1/2

Day. So I work on it for 30 min to an hour a day over a longer period of time. As someone with ADHD, it’s a lot more manageable that way.

Drink plenty of water if you wanna avoid that crash. Or alleviate it. Goood luck and kudos on your inevitable success!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You can't crash if you just continually drink caffeine.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

First off, you opened Imgur which is basically procrastination city.

Remember, it’s ok to cry. ☺️

Whatever works for you. Life will suck, but it is worth it. If I can get a MA, PhD, and now tenure track all with 4 kids, you can do it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh god the sonic adventure 1 clip. Even as a kid I knew the animations were bad. Still played the fuck out of it though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How similar do you think the effects of your caffeinated high are to just taking speed... Do people take speed anymore?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just googled it... Speed is just meth, nevermind it's very popular

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Only 15 tabs? You gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Been there my friend. I’m gathering data via survey before I can finish. Hardest part is the writing and then the waiting. Good Luck!

Finished mine back in September, Godspeed fellow human! It fucking sucks!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

30-45 minutes of focused time mixed with 5-10 min breaks. Also, brain dumps and editing is easier than writing great 1st draft.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I used to agonize over the wording of sentences. Now I just write it even if it means sounding like a 5 year old. Fix it later.

Drugs

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh man, thank you for the encouragement. I have definitely plateaued on motivation for my dang paper :(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Next time go with a light roast. More caffeine. Or perhaps some Earl Grey?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for this. Time to close imgur and go back to writing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wrote mine by writing chapter titles, then section headings and then paragraph starts etc... then fill it in :)

Thesis is easy. Just organize your time.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you don't stay up late chugging espresso. you work on it early and often. cramming doesn't work for anything.

8 years ago | Likes 258 Dislikes 6

As a procrastinator who has become dependent on the rush of stress and adrenaline last minute work gives me, this is REALLY hard to do.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly. Go to bed early, get up early, head for your local library and write an hour or two, have a break and hop to it again.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have 2 degrees that say otherwise

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

As someone who always crammed and got good grades on last minute papers, thesis made me go "early and often" for the first time

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

That's how I poo in work

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wrote my masters thesis in 8 days total work. Have a masters. Sure it might have been easier if I had spread it out, but I'll take shorter

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Agreed. Masters First Class from University of Cambridge. 22 days.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Start a few months early, work only a couple hours a day.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

THIS. AND TRY THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE. I FINISHED MY THESIS EARLY BECAUSE OF STRUCTURED WORK AND POMODORO

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

especially not a thesis.

8 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 0

Worked for me! 2 weeks =60%

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It worked for my thesis. It wasn't a good thesis, but it passed. I think it gave me an ulcer though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You have to love it. If you don't love it, you won't make it against those who do. Be where you love the pain of the work.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

works fine for sex.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It works for some things

8 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 3

if you're cramming to end up on reddits #worstdates

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Nope, slowly working on it till it's ready is soooooo much better.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I never feel bad for people that do this. Pay attention in class. Do the required reading and homework and do well.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 16

Ha. Classes are the least of my worries.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Most degrees do not have enough time in the day to do all of the required readings

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's a bit different with a thesis though, where there are no classes and homework but you're on your own doing research and the writing.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Still don't feel bad for the procrastinator.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

It worked for my Ass. Degree and even Bachelor's. I didn't pursue a Master's though because I agree it fails when writing a literal book.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

There are non thesis options out there. I’m in one right now

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Glad it worked for your ass.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

One night researching (google scholar is your friend), one night reading, one night outlining, three nights writing, one night proofreading.

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 4

And 1 night crying because your windows computer crashed and saved absolutely nothing

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

one word: backups

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

24 nights formatting fonts, 5 nights indexing bibliography, 13 nights resizing figures, 127 nights drinking, 397 nights procrastinating.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Not sure about OP's situation, but thesises can be upwards of 50 pages....

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Yeah mine was 25000 words and had to contain original research so this model would not have worked

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Writing 16-17 pages in a nights is do able

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

But editing/perfecting 50 in a night...not so much.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also, unreasonable amount of time for reading and research.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

that's the one. It'll be roughly 60-80 by the time I'm done. :) It's a statewide comparison on public policy best practices. Woo!

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Oh that's very interesting!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah. Sounds like months of planning and editing. Not a week. I have 2 English degrees btw. I feel your pain.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Can I get a venti double latte with foam? Please and thanks.
