I bought a bus in November 2015 and have been working on converting it into an RV. Here's the next chapter in my tale.

Has is been long enough since my last post? Find them here:
Part I http://imgur.com/gallery/KZR7NeV
Part II http://imgur.com/gallery/LWE8x

The bus sat for a while. I originally didn't make the deadline I had set for myself, so the project sorta went on the back burner for a long time. Many months, in fact.

Since the end of Part II, I've finished removing all the nasty ass plywood from the floor. I had also mentioned these god forsaken rails and that I didn't know how to get them off.

These rails held on the seat belts for handicap students on the bus.

I ended up chiseling out as much wood from the sides of them as possible,

then sliding the cutoff wheel on the grinder in between the rail and the wood.

Gotta enjoy the nice days.

Here I'm peeling off the lettering. Gotta take every chance you can get to be a fucking dork.

Here I was wire brushing the rusty spots off the metal deck. You can see the top two panels are done in comparison to the bottom one which isn't.

Safety first with wire wheels :) I still have a scar from this.

A few months went by before I did anything else. The next few pictures are recent.

The next step was to seal all the holes in the floor and around the periphery of the walls. I used scrap metal to patch some holes.

I used an industrial strength sealant to make sure water wouldn't be an issue.

Rustoleum rust inhibitor overtop of everything. Very clean look to it

This is the beginning of the build-in. Laying down plastic sheeting to act as a vapor barrier.

I used 1x2" furring strips to line each wall. The strips are secured through the floor with self tapping deck screws, the holes of which I loaded with construction adhesive to try to maintain a good seal.

One side of furring strips done

Here the floor is ready for insulation. The studs in the middle are also secured through the floor.

I'm using what's called a floating floor, which means that the plywood on top of the insulation won't actually be secured through the steel deck. Rather, it will only be screwed to the furring strips on the sides and the studs in the middle. This allows for better expansion and contraction due to temperature changes, and minimizes the number of holes I have to put in the steel deck.

Insulation going in.

Insulation in

Getting the first plywood board down with the help of my friends. Rep the naysh.

Here you can see I added some extra studs between the middle of the bus and the outer furring strips. These were only held in place by the insulation. They weren't screwed to the steel deck and the plywood wasn't screwed to them. This gives me a little more hard support points to take the full weight of the furniture and people, but still allows for some slippage when the wood expands and contracts.

Insulation and 99% of subflooring done! Now it's getting really exciting.

Bonus bus puppy (old photo)

Some of my friends and I have decided to take the bus to Firefly music festival this year, so I'm in turbo mode to get this fuckin project done. I'm very excited. The more work on it I do, the more I want to keep working on it.

Next is to establish a floor plan and start building some protofurniture. Stay tuned for more updates.

Firefly?! *sends up secret Delaware signal for fellow Delawarians* We'll see you there!

Hope everything is going well with this. I just put a down payment on an old RV that needs some TLC. I love seeing how folks furnish these.

I would be proud to ride in this short bus.

I grew up way out of town. My ride was a short bus to a middle school of about 2k puberty ridden spoiled brats. Even I needed a safety hat.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@whereischandler can we please live in a bus?

Hope to see you guys at firefly! Look for the dinosaur flag.

Out of curiousity, shouldn't your vapour barrier be on the warm side of the insulation? ( I guess the foam itself is also a barrier )

Can... Can I subscribe for updates? :-)

Oh look at you and all your friends. pttthhhh!

I want to do this SO BAD!

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Solid choice in the Werner NXT1A08, but I'd prefer the 6208. Cheaper with the same load capacity. Do what you will tho, I'm not a dealer

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I ever get a school bus, I will convert the stop sign to a big middle finger sign, so I can express my derision to the other drivers.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He said $2200

Thanks

Im going to Firefly I must see this in person.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Same! Hopefully he's excepting visitors

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Accepting ^

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks like a thorough job. But did you factor in the weight / fuel consumption impact of that grade of ply?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was wondering why he wasn't using more hardwood. Didn't think about weight. How much difference would 150 pounds make though?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't hardwood even denser than ply? Anyways he might just be wanting to use it as a static trailer, no?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That depends on the plywood and the hardwood, Hardwood plywood tends to be birch or oak. But the weight comes from the glue more than wood.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Living my dream @OP. I wanna travel in that shit get places I don't need to be and do things my anus will regret later. Keep it up.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

After reading this comment I am definitely buying a mini bus.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's the spirit!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can't wait to see what you have planned for all the windows and overall exterior.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not much. The windows, at least for now, are all staying. I'll be painting the outside however.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

how much does a bus like that cost?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He paid $2200

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the info.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@tonguepunches @isthiseverything

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

YESS!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awesome project! One thing: is your insulation foil faced? Two vapor barriers can cause moisture/mold issues. Just a heads up.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Please elaborate. I wouldn't have even thought of vapor barriers. I guess from CO2?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If any H2O vapor gets in between the 2 barriers, it won't have an easy path out and could condense. Enough condensation could lead to mold.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ahh, condensation. Of course.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is the foil facing on both sides of the insulation? Maybe you could just flip it over?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

might want to make sure it still runs properly if its been sitting for a while

9 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 3

I run it for half an hour once or twice a week. It still runs great.

9 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 0

Good might want to drive it to get tyranny fluids warmed up too would be the worst if it broke down

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

Tyranny fluids are almost always bad once they get going.

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

So a flush might be mandatory

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Do you know the MPG? Always wondered on a bus like this

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm a mechanic for a fleet of these little bastards. With gasoline engines 7-8 mpg is typical. Not sure about diesels we don't have any.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ah thanks always wondered about doing this vs a pre-built van at about 12mpg like my uncle

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We sell off a bunch of these every summer for really cheap and alot of people end up making campers out of them.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Keep it titled as a bus. It's legal to drink in a bus, so long as you're not driving

9 years ago | Likes 1087 Dislikes 5

Cant you drink as a passenger in a normal car?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not here it isn't.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I would double check the laws where you live

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This guy fucking gers it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You cant drink in an rv?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If it's titled as a bus, then It will have to be safety checked every 6 months or 10,000 miles.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is the best advice EVER.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

If he registers as a bus some states will require the driver to hold a CDL with a passenger endorsement.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

What aren't you allowed to drink in a regular car as a passenger?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Usually open container laws

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

school IS cool

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not everyone can only have fun while getting drunk, you know. He wants to get it titled as an RV to save thousands of dollars over the years

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

it's illegal to drink as a passenger ? that's a dumb law, shit here you can drink and drive just as long as you dont go over the limit

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 8

It's legal to drink as a passenger on a bus. That's what he said. Ex. Party bus.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Fun fact: You have to have sic packs of beer in a grocery bag in GA or it's an open container violaton

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WV too. Any alcohol that isn't in a package/box has to be in a bag.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Texas has a no open container law. You gotta put any open bottles in the glove compartment/trunk or you can get fines

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Jersey too

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Many US states have laws saying you can't have open bottles, so that you can't claim "I just took a swig of this between stopping and you 1/

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

talking to me officer" 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm curious, where is "here"?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It is like that in oz.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's waaaayyy cheaper in the long run to register as an RV. Plus, my friends and I don't really drink.

9 years ago | Likes 761 Dislikes 11

Goodness, what do you do with your downtime?! Be sober? The horror!

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Work on the bus, obviously

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Obviously lmao

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fist bump dude. I stopped drinking after first bub and the hubby stopped when he learned how it effects exercise. My mates still drink tho.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 6

Effects exercise? I'm not sure if I wanna know or not - 99% of my drinking is done while exercising...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Yeah, really not good for it. My hubby is in the military and they all drink only on Friday nights because they don't train on Saturdays.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm in "a drinking group with a running problem" - we drink before, during, and after our runs. I've never noticed much. What does it do?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what is a first bub?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My first child... you know, pregnancy, babies, breastfeeding, all that shit.

Don't buses have No Food or Drink signs all over them? Legal where?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They would probably be bus company rules so they don't have to clean up after passengers

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can in limos pretty much everywhere. Not much difference except the driver is separated. Wouldnt think a "bus" would be much different

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

As long as there is a step between the front and back it is legal in the US. Regardless of what it is registered as.

How much excess wealth do you have?

9 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 2

At least 7 wealth

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you want to get a lot of luxury, like a bathroom, about $25,000. If this is basic stuff, like some beds and maybe a stove about $15,000.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Not even close. I'm about $2600 in so far. I absolutely do not reasonably expect to exceed $5000.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

These are my sources, so of course, I thought this was the average cost. Most people also seem to take about 6 months to a year to build.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that including the cost of the bus?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A good running bus like that is 5000$ at the least

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

He bought it for $2200. It's in the earlier post.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes. This bus was $2200

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

With a job and no debt this isn't hard. You don't need to earn more, just spend less. Get roommates. Eat cheap. Invest in your obsessions.
