WRONG!!! First time life caught still frame was on friend Grug who stood with stick in rain and died. Grug back show light from sky clear as day. Much more clear than first time caught still that you claim!

Thanks to this guy that we have realistic forked lightning spells in RPG games

Why didn't scientists use their eyes? Where they to scared to watch the sky when a storm was raging?
Why did they need a photo?

you ever try to measure how long the straight bits are or count the branches of a lightning strike with your eyes?

Guy who finally managed to photograph lightning on Sept. 3, 1882 finally seeing the previous day's headline: "Fuck!"

Um.. people have been always able to see forked lightnings in the distance with their bare eyes. I have many times. It's good to have photographs of lightnings but I don't see how that one needed proving

Yeah. This text is probably getting confused between fork and sheet lightning. Sheet lightning is just a flash...I believe from my limited understanding of the subject.

Follow up: Having done the work to google it, it appears sheet lightning is actually a fork, but just hidden in the cloud or upper atmosphere.

Neat! And excellent penmanship by the photographer

I was taught to write in a copperplate script. Then I changed school and we were encouraged to print in block letters. I have done a mishmash of the two ever since.

It's a lost art.

If you look at a lot of notations on old photographs it feels like everyone had badass handwriting back them.

Dude, I found my grandmother's report cards from the 1920s...you are correct!

I'm kinda shitty that they called it a "font" in the post tbh. Like, what?

https://petapixel.com/2020/08/05/these-are-the-worlds-first-photos-of-lightning/ for some actual history on it. I'm going to say "precise timing" wasn't really a part of it. With the struggle of getting plates fast (sensitive) enough to even pick it up odds are he opened the shutter when the storm was cooking off and waited for a bolt, then closed the shutter after without any great rush. He could probably have had the shutter open for minutes waiting. Now the dude making a Daguerreotype of it/

that is friggin baller, and on hard mode. Though I guess at least for that process the blue/uv the lightning gives off plays to the strengths of it. Even so. Damn. (I may have a personal bias for Daguerreotype, because I think they are cool AF)

LOVE Daguerreotypes! Haven't seen one in many years.
