Skype

Type %appdata% Navigate to Roaming/Microsoft/Windows/StartMenu/Programs/Startup and delete any programs you don't want to startup.

Task Manager is like your own personal bouncer for annoying programs like this.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why I use google hangouts for family, and Discord for online friends.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh my fuck I thought it was just me.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I close skype with task manager when I'm done. A couple of people have complained about startup programs; those can be cancelled with TM too

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, yes. A thousand times, yes.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's really annoying that you can't disable Skype since it's part of Windows now. It is just always there running in the background.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It makes the saddest noise shutting down too. "Awwwwwwwww. :_("

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I don't know what everyone is complaining about, I don't have any trouble closing Skype completely. It's 3 clicks

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"send or recieve" yeah, sure Skype is a Grammar retard.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why I killed Skype two years ago and never brought it back

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I force quit everything now fuck you constant bs reminders I don't give a fuck about tom being online.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I never understood why people complain about this. I keep it open so people can get in touch with me whenever. Closing it defeats the point.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just use msconfig to disable all shit that starts up when Windows start like skype does. ask manager in win10, stand alone in older windows

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Task manager ... feck.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fucking this. Fuck you Skype

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

The first problem is you're using bloat/malware called Skype. Get Discord.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Or you can just right-click it, hit quit, and check the box "Don't ask again".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and this is why skype is not installed on any of my personal machines.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This only scratches the surface of why I quit using skype.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

.... Go on.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Data mining chat for ads, poor update mgmt, spam, limited integration, and limited markdown support, account mergers with skype/xbox/office

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I need to use task manager to kill it, it's an annoying program.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

No you don't. You can just right-click it, hit quit, and check the box "Don't ask again".

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Open task manager, end task/process. Works every time. :)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Or you can just right-click it, hit quit, and check the box "Don't ask again".

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just open task manager and kill the process.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Or you can just right-click it, hit quit, and check the box "Don't ask again".

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Someone still uses Skype? O___o

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 8

Pretty much everyone. There's few services that do everything that Skype does, and there's nothing that bad about Skype.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When Discord learns to always keep your mic open instead of their useless voice activation, I'll switch.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

The voice activation setting in Skype is the same as the one in discord. If it isn't picking up enough, lower the voice activation.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's you, not Discord lol, or your shitty mic perhaps.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

O____o. I'm a discord kinda guy

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

O____o I'm a wired cup kinda guy

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Discord's just as bad about this, with added memory hogging and unnecessary GPU effects.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Damn people..disable the function...they give you a choice. Yall get angry over silly shit.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

People will hate MS just because they're Microsoft.Apple's forcing updates for ages, MS forces them in Windows 10 and people lose their shit

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You're assuming we don't hate apple doing it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's little to no public outrage over it; nothing on the scale of Windows 10

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes i fucking hate that about Skype god gee whiz why have an X button to begin with

8 years ago | Likes 195 Dislikes 5

Yeah, it might as well just be a second minimize button.

8 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

I don't mind that behavior...but it's usually something I set up myself...not a program default. Ditto with starting with windows.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

At least it doesn't look like it has closed like steam and discord do when you press the x button.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

thats the point of the x button if you dont want it to look like its closed press the minimize button

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but it doesn't actually close. It sits in the background and notifies me of stuff whenever it feels like it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, but it doesn't actually close. It sits in the background and notifies me of stuff whenever it feels like it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Hate the fact that skype does that. Or programs are starting to do that.

8 years ago | Likes 321 Dislikes 4

Certain programs I want to be running all the time, like steam and my alarm clock.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's an option to straight up close it, just go to settings then uncheck close to tray. Probably in general.

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

unless your discord then it "not a priority feature" even though its been asked for since the beginning. literally no way to change it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And then do that again every other update because Microsoft knows best and will change your settings for you.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Discord doesn't even have an option to NOT disable to taskbar. Tilts me right off the board.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Took me forever to find out how to not have it run in the background

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you do it??? I have to go to Task Manager every time

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would like to know too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck this shit. Also, fuck any program that has "startup with windows" as default.

8 years ago | Likes 1719 Dislikes 8

Spotify’s good doe

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I disabled it and turned discord start with Windows app instead.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a security professional, I love when malware uses it though. Makes it much easier to find

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have a dream that one day Linux users are majority

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thank you! If I want it minimized I will minimize it. They already have a button for that.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's nice w/ steam.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You mean like antivirus software, backup software, etc?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, I do not want to fucking update Quicktime.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Week technically you don't have to worry about that anymore because Apple is no longer updating QuickTime.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless it is an option that must be enabled by the user or it asks permission.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does it increase how long it takes your computer to boot up?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And this is why I "skip the Skype."

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Skype on windows is nothing compared to skype on mobile. To stop skype on mobile I have to uninstall it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Greenify is your answer

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, Discord is nice...

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

If by nice you mean does every potentially annoying thing a program could do.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 19

You can disable all of that tho

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I'm assuming you aren't very keen on user settings?

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I'm sorry. You're right. Let's push that logic a step further and all use Linux too.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What annoying things does it do? Better than Teamspeak, curse, or skype

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

It does the same thing this post complains about - hitting the "close" button doesn't actually close it, it minimizes to the taskbar.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 8

That's the only somewhat annoying thing it does. At least voice attenuation can be disabled and is by default.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not by default

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Why? It makes a lot of sense for messaging programs to be always-on.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 11

So then make a minimize tab and make it look like a minimize tab. Don't make the minimize tab look like a close tab.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Performance and principle. I want full control of my device, and only want something running when I need it actually running. Fuck Skype.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can close it. I just makes more sense for it to continue running in the background by default.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

If you use Skype to talk to coworkers, you want to turn it off once you are done with work for the day.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What if somebody wants needs to contact you? You should always be reachable.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

You are always reachable on your phone.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you live to work or work to live?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Real companies offer work/life balance. You should be able to enjoy your off time.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, fuck ANY program that has an "Are you sure" dialog for stupid stuff. "Are you sure?" - Well I clicked the X box, so guess what???"

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Also, fuck any browser window opening in the background, or pulls "Are you sure" shit within 30 seconds, or redirects from within a frame...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was just moving mouse around and a page i liked fine did this. I no longer liked it and closed it immediately.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That sort of thing has saved my bacon on more than one occasion.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Please explain. What site, what occasion? (I'm not referring to the "Are you sure you want to close ALL OPEN TABS?" prompt.)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If youre not talking about that sort of thing what are you talking about?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The "Are you sure" when closing an individual tab. Usually used by spammy ads which redirect to a completely unrelated server.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oops, sorry, that's my other comment. The most stupid case is when you start a setup which tells you "before you proceed you should check X"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1. Go to "run" 2. type msconfig 3. Go to startup programs 4. Remove those programs you don't want your computer to start with. 5. Save

8 years ago | Likes 311 Dislikes 11

Dot, so I can do this when I get back to my computer.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You are a mutha fuckin hero

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure, at least for Skype, that it can be disabled in their settings.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Format c: will clear that up

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And next time you run the program, it'll add itself back into autostart...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yknow, there's task manager that you can do that with easier

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, but the end user should not be expected to change their config because of annoying design

I'm gunna do this. I have a fan check that comes up oddly enough. Can you do the opposite and just have programs boot from start up? 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's just to click them on. They will most likely be on that list. Just don't take of any c win programs. Most likely system files.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Like chrome or steam or whatever

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure. Locate the Startup folder on your version of Windows. Any links in there will start when you log in to your account

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Oh shit I didnt know that was a thing. Thanks maynerd

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Ok, then fuck programs that reapply that setting every time its started.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

We call those programs malware

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

The problem isn't that I can't get them to stop doing it, it's that I have to expend the effort in the first place.

8 years ago | Likes 234 Dislikes 1

i appreciate the frustration, but all the same https://imgflip.com/s/meme/First-World-Problems.jpg

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 18

Oh, I'm not arguing. It sounds entitled, and I fully admit as much.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A problems a problem no matter how small. Don't discriminate

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah yes, the old game of "never, ever complain as there is always someone worse off." ALWAYS. NEVER EVER COMPLAIN. EVER.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

wow way to take the fun out of a joke meme.
