Hi guys, I'm kronique! I'm a PhD student in Canada, studying African archaeology. This picture is of me (not one of the kidnapped archaeologists!). Over the past 7 years I've done archaeological research in Tanzania (twice), Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

When you spend a lot of time in one area (especially a remote area), you get to know the people. It's common to hire local collaborators, and important to form relationships with people who you encounter. Here I am with some of the kids we would see every day in 2016 on our way to Magubike Rockshelter, Tanzania.

On Feb.22, 2017, two German archaeologists working in northern Nigeria were kidnapped. They are reportedly being held for ransom, but are expected to be returned safely upon payment.

In addition, two local hunters (Anas Ibrahim and Adamu Abdulrahim) tried to help stop the kidnapping, and were killed.

My thoughts are with everyone affected by this event.

As you can imagine, the community of African archaeologists is fairly small. We are all feeling shaken by this tragedy. Several of our members have put together a crowdfunding page to support the families of the murdered men.

https://www.youcaring.com/thefamiliesofanasibrahimandadamuabdulrahim-764684#
FYI - The crowdfunding platform they chose automatically adds a dollar to your donation (which I find to be a dick-move).

Donate if you want, don't if you don't. I dislike posts asking for donations, so this is weird for me. I'm sharing this because my heart is broken for these murdered locals and (aside from my meager donation) I don't know how else I can help.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading and I hope you have a good weekend.

Tax.

**EDIT - Feb.26 - I just woke up to an email that the German archaeologists have been released unharmed, and no ransom was reported to be paid (https://www.360nobs.com/2017/02/just-two-germans-regain-freedom-nigeria-abduction/). I am relieved for their safe return; my heart remains broken for the families of the murdered local hunters.

Hmm... Seems like an unsafe job. Might I suggest a safer one?

Their first mistake was going to Nigeria. It's a shit hole.

Unfortunately, no happy resolution for the two villagers. Fingers crossed for the hostages though.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(2) Good for you though for following your dreams and doing what you want. Dangers and all.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thanks man. As a grad student I don't get paid for this research, so that makes it even crazier.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yhose things aren't going anywhere, they can wait

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah digging up rocks where Boko Haram plays war probably wasn't a great plan. I'm sure she'll turn up.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Wasn't me that was kidnapped, and apparently Boko Haram isn't active in the Janjela region, but point taken.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Various news sources speak of individual groups selling kidnapped persons from that region to Boko Haram though.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They have been released saturday evening. Source: FAZ/DPA German news.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just came to update the same thing. Great news for their families

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Archeology in Nigeria sounds about as safe as the hikers in Afghanistan. There are definitely better options until a region simmers down...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Except often archeologists want to find these objects before they are destroyed. Brother in law went to afghanistan to recover artifacts,

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

before they were all destroyed by a Chinese strip mine. it was a race against time, and they didn't recover it all before it was destroyed

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hmm I wonder if Nigerian board of tourism knows this. I won't even go to cleveland, but thanks for the heads up.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I can't imagine that Nigeria is a big tourist draw

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's in the middle of transitioning into one of the strongest economies in Africa and emerging political power so it's gonna be messy

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But the north is really where the most trouble is, the south is quite a bit better by comparison.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One news source I read stated that in a recent flight delay, Airlines refused to pay people to get to the next airport due to safety concern

Is your cat missing an ear? Good post by the way.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She is! It had to be removed a couple years ago because of a malignant melanoma. She just turned 18 though, and is still going strong!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Awesome! Happy 18 years for your kitty. I Wish you both many more.

Thanks dude. Feel free to downvote one of my other posts/comments to help balance it out.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They have already been freed yesterday.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for updating! Unfortunately, their freedom probably doesn't comfort the families of the murdered locals very much =(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah it's like neopets but worse.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Cool, maybe I'll see you there one day

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Yeah ill never go to Africa, except for South Africa. The rest of it is dangerous. You're asking to get kidnapped, raped, tortured, or dead

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just avoid the ones currently at war and you should be fine. SA is safe for tourists. There is a lot of crime in SA BUT mostly between local

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The majority of the time I've been in Africa I felt safe. The most unsafe I felt was in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the airport.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Really? That's interesting. I've seen a lot of crazy shit that goes down and Capetown and stuff. I just have no desire to go to Africa

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd rather be in Asia, South america, or Europe

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And as I say that I forget how dangerous South America can be too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lol

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, once they get the money there's no real incentive to release them.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 6

They have already been release Saturday evening. Source: FAZ/DPA German news.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most of these kidnapping victims by far are released after payment. Problem is that it encourages more kidnappings.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I assume it'll be some exchange type deal maybe?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

In an isolated case, no. But this is institutionalized kidnapping. If they don't release them, they won't get paid for the next kidnapping.

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

How do we know that this is institutionalized? Do you know the kidnappers?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 10

Common (very) practice in the region.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

True this

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, that's bad business. If you have a group that regularly kidnaps, killing your hostages means there's no reason to negotiate with you.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

At $200,000 in Nigeria they only have to do it once.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

It's not a couple of guys. The area is controlled by various war lords. Money buy weapons, men, bribes, increasing one territory.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Regular kidnappers often do return hostages on payment, so they can repeat the act again. Also, if you kill your hostage, you go from

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

kidnapper to murderers, something which tends to get a bit more pursuit.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

They've already killed two people. I don't think they care too much as long as they get paid.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

but they "only" killed locals. that mild concern from Nigerian gvmt, kill a foreigner and different level of reaction

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

As a South African, I'm just gonna say that anyone who goes to Nigeria is pretty fucking courageous. You hear so much shit about that place.

9 years ago | Likes 212 Dislikes 4

Courageous? I have absolutely no respect for people like that. They endanger everyone else around them like those two locals and they

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

potentially cost their home government and therefore fellow citizens loads of money. I feel like if someone goes into such a country they

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

should agree to not receive any help if something happens. This is just beyond stupid, reckless and irresponsible. Except aid workers ofc..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Doesn't it depends where you are? As far as I know Northern Nigeria is the one with Boko Haram.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I went to Lagos and it was pretty nice experience. Just avoid the north I guess?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Another South African? Yesss!! From what part do you come from comrade!?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Stellenbosch, Western Cape :D

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yaaasss :) student probably? I come from the karoo bud :) will jy braai?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know. It's so bad, this Nigerian prince I was talking to online the other day asked if I could help move his fortune out of the country.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

What about Tanzania, is that one safe?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it's more touristy, so it's a bit safer

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cote D'Ivoire, Seychelles and Nambia is pretty safe these days too

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I went there two years ago for volunteering. The people were wonderful! I want to go back.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where in Tanzania did you volunteer?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was in mikumi. I'd love to go up north to Arusha next time.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We drive through Mikumi on our way to Iringa! Love seeing the amimals.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Politically stable. My supervisor was pickpocketed there last summer. Never heard of researchers being kidnapped there though.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ah, I am a future phlebotomist, and one of the places I can go to work one month is Tanzania

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In my experience the people are friendly, and it's generally safe as long as you're careful. I think you'd like it!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Courageous? Or idiotic?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Ask Leif Eriksson. Dangerous for different reasons yes but you need to be at a place to make it better

Yes, SA is beautiful but there's definitely crime and I think it's rising. I was robbed at knifepoint in Stellenbosch, Western Cape last May

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A lot of South Africa is really beautiful and safe.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

that kind of picture. I got the same feeling about Brazil, I'm just not used to such a great disparity in wealth and crime coming from SWE.

Yes, that can be difficult to get used to when coming from the "first world".
