I always pose the question "Ok, what if it was you?" I did the same during the Syria crysis. People just couldn't give a straight answer because they knew it was wrong. Makes perfect sense to me. They expect the German occupiers to be evil and treat them wrong; when that happened, it's meeting expectations.
They also expect their own neighbors and countrymen to stand with their own people. When some of them don't do that, it's breaking expectations, in a bad way. Even if the Nazi occupiers were objectively worse, they're objectively worse in a fully predicted way.
