Believe with a dash of realism, not a bad way to be

And three weeks later I got the office. And now you are a pretty big deal and married to Emily Blunt.

This shouldn't inspire people to be actors. It should inspire people to support the ones they love while helping them be mindful of their reality. He could afford to gamble losing another few months, thanks to her support.

I told my Mom the same thing when I got into UArts for music. She told me to go for it! I came close to doing the rockstar thing and love where I landed. *Thanks Mom! Xoxo*

For every story like this, there's a thousand exactly the same except they don't book the office at the last minute. They go home to whatever job and never go on TV to tell you about not succeeding. Survivor bias.

Amazing mom tho

Just like any other human, they are, until they aren’t

Lucky shit is so...lucky.

I’m telling you to give up on your dreams yourself because I can’t tell you to give up on your dreams. But ain’t that telling him to give up on he’s dreams???

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He's not telling it as inspiration, as advice, so it's not his fault, he's just talking about his own life. But this is a prime example of survivorship bias. Try to balance this sort of thing with sunk cost fallacy. Giving up too early sucks, giving up too late sucks, and you will never know which is which and need to make decisions anyway.

I work maintenance in a hospital. Fire extinguisher inspections were today and I unlocked a Doctor's private office to inspect his. Dude has a huge poster of Pam's face up on the wall across from his desk simply captioned, "Pam Beesley The Office" No pics of his wife and kids, no "hang in there", cat motivation posters...just a big ass picture of Pam's Face. I just checked the extinguisher pressure and got the F outta there before he arrived and made things awkward.

He had 12 roles before the first episode of The Office aired.

Why is he wearing tights?

Nice, because it worked for him. But inspirational?

same dude who started that covid good news zoom show to make people happy but immediately sold out for cash he didnt need.

I think "passionately pursue your dreams but be open to it if what you want out of life changes" is inspirational advice.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I think the moral of the story is to not give up, cause you can be just 3 weeks away from living your dreams.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Well ain't this life just a temporal oddity - always only three weeks from living the dream!

I don't think giving something your best shot means you failed. It means throughout your life you'll never think "what if". There are many people out there who never gave it a go at all, and are filled with what ifs. Life is long, give it a go.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Yup. That’s the thing about certain motivational speakers. Like oh do the right thing with your money and anyone can be a millionaire! Anyone? Maybe. Everyone? No.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

because they all gave up before winning the lottery!

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Or you end up in such an absolutely shit film that it just destroys your career when it was just getting good

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

To be honest, this is true if I remember properly. You can statistically make all your losses back in some stuff... as long as you have an endless supply of money to go at it...

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yeah as long as its not mathematically slanted or with limits like in a casino lol, you could always just continuously double down until you eventually win

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Now when is my break coming?

Or... or... hear me out... ask @op's mom... eh?

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I've got some bad news for you.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

99.69% of gamblers give up right before they strike it rich, DONT GIVE UP GAMBLING!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Statistically, it's not. This is like the Bo Burnham interview where he says "people like me telling you to follow your dreams is like a lottery winner telling you to buy Powerball tickets, it works!"

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

If you really want to do the thing, you might as well go for it, but expecting a big break into fame is not realistic, maybe you should go for it anyway but have to enjoy it regardless of whether you become a but celebrity or not, because most likely, that won't happen.

They are awesome, at least they should be. My mother has been/is so good to me, even more so when I really didn't deserve it. This is because she knows I've been hurt. She was enabling me, to a point, but seeing her sacrifice was more than enough to get my shit right. Don't get me wrong, she did some suspect shit, as well. But don't we all?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

My kid's mom is. She's amazing.

My mum is certainly not

I sure hope my kids think so.

His mom is. Mine was a violent, physically and emotionally abusive piece of shit that screamed profanity at my child when they came out as non-binary and cutting my mom out of our lives was the best decision I ever made.

Most of them, yeah...

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Judging on how well my mom appeared like a decent person in public, it could be soany more than we'll ever know.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They can be. I might more accurately say they are in a position to have the most impact one someone's life of anyone. For good or bad.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

As a mother of soon three, I am acutely aware of this. I try SO hard, and still feel like I come up short too often. It's the absolute best but freaking hardest job I've ever had.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As something of a guide, I think a good measure would be to think back on the memories of your own mother and the memories that had a lasting impact on you. There are usually times we can be aware that this is a moment that is going to last for someone. It's often not even really big moments. Just a small coal of a moment that burns for a lifetime and those moments are when you need to really be aware of how you make them *feel*, not even necessarily what you say or do.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, my mum was not a blueprint for loving care. I feel like we've come very far, and have found our own way, but I still catch myself in high-stress situations defaulting to the authoritarian, tough-love schemes I grew up with.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah but that's all the more reason to check in with those moments that you still remember that she made you feel guilty, or defeated, or ashamed just for being yourself, or perhaps for some mistake. Then you'll have an idea of the kinds of moments you must be the most aware of yourself and aware that what your children see and feel in that moments is going to last. For better or for worse.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So true. Mine unfortunately was a force for empowerment but source of my sadness. I used to think I was a bad kid...I'm 46 now. Got divorced 3 yrs ago and she and my dad have not visited me. I invited them multiple times and moved twice. Been in my house for 2 yrs - but they visit my brother every few months. Not complaining (maybe a little) but at least finally after all these years I know it's not my fault for everything.
