Liu Bolin aka "The Invisible Man" paints himself to blend in with different backgrounds creating some pretty amazing images.

Liu Bolin is an artist from China’s Shandong province. Born in 1973, he currently lives and works in Beijing. Bolin received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Shandong College of Arts in 1995 and his Master of Fine Arts from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2001.

Known as The Invisible Man, Bolin’s most popular works are from his “Hiding in the City” series; photographic works that began as performance art in 2005.

Helped by his assistants, Bolin stands still for hours in a landscape while they paint on him to create a camouflage, blending him into his surroundings.

eBolin states: “My intention was not to disappear in the environment but instead to let the environment take possession of me.”

Bolin is not looking for a way to disappear as an individual but insists on the damages caused by the economic and urban development on the individuals. This is a kind of silent hold where the human being loses his capacity to integrate.

I always think of this when I see this guy. Found this on FP and hoped someone made this comment.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But how good is he at the picture search puzzle from Highlights magazine?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You should've posted some pictures that he wasnt in just to fuck with people

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Who's this Dan you speak of?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Asian where's Waldo is stepping up their game

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My visual acuity isn't very good, so a couple of these took me a few seconds to find him.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can he fix it or is he stuck like that?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That tractor one took me a second

9 years ago | Likes 440 Dislikes 2

Front left tire, people.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Same.

The panda one was nuts, i can only see his feet on that one.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So his ability is to stand still for hours as others paint him?

The Chinese John Cena

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

LL Cool J already did this in Babes in Toyland. Albeit not as well.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Also done by Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes 2... but those were movies... this is real life. Way more impressive

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You mean is not fantasy?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Movie you're thinking of was just called "Toys." Babes in Toyland is a very different movie.

Crazy how nature do that

9 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 1

If my internet were censored, I'd be bored out of my tits, probably enough to stand still for hours on end too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But it do.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

He ain't got nothing on Waldo, I found him in every photo

9 years ago | Likes 332 Dislikes 4

The tractor one took way longer than I'd care to admit.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, until you have to look for him in crowds, ya cocky bastard!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh,. he got something on Waldo. The problem is, Waldo's a tiny-ass bitch.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where's Waldo, Asian edition!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If he was just a little off-center, or somewhere in the background, this would make a great game.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it wasn't for the shoes standing out in most of the pics, I wouldn't have found him.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Damn you're good. I've looked thru every photo 3 times and I can't find Waldo in any of them!

9 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 0

You win.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

@op next time throw an image in that there is no guy in.

9 years ago | Likes 213 Dislikes 1

It's Sateen

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is amazing, but I'm most impressed with his assistants who do the actual painting.

9 years ago | Likes 1468 Dislikes 2

Welcome to the heated debate

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

What painting?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah feel like the real heroes here are the painters. This dude literally just stands around.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

DaVinci used apprentices for the bulk of his paintings; he just chose the subjects and finished them. Check out Sol Lewitt, never painted.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

#10 is in front of Ai Wei Wei's design. He didn't build that building, so I guess really the construction workers should get the credit.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

This guy didn't paint the details behind him. They were kinda already there. Nice try though.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

What? I'm saying if we're going to credit the painters and not the designers then Ai Wei Wei shouldn't get credit for his building.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah this dude's not the artist, just the canvas

9 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 18

...This "dude" started it all himself by painting himself into landscapes. He was the artist and canvas.

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

Sadly they never do. All professional photographers do is point and shoot. That's what my photaghraphy teacher says

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 10

Which may be the reason he is a photography teacher and not a working pro. If he is under 50 without any amount of published work, dont trust

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Most photographers worth their salt give credit where credit is due, however dont discard the artists because OP didnt bother with crediting

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I mean, that's kind of like saying "all professional painters do is move a brush", technically true but misrepresented

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Professional It just type all day. Professional esports teams play games all day. Professional office worker poops all day.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Assisted by the people who do ALL OF THE IMPRESSIVE STUFF.

9 years ago | Likes 143 Dislikes 2

yeah but he stands there reeeeeal still

9 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

Chomsky wouldn't what?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whatever you're thinking about doing, probably. Noam Chomsky is like the disapproving mom of the academic world.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Goddamn it Noam, now I feel guilty for having a beer.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to be fair, none of them probably do anything particularly impressive individually, it's a team effort, and he probably heads it

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

So like in anything the head guy gets the credit and those that do the work, meh. Sounds right.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well, it's his vision likely, kind of like how directors get credit for movies. He determines how it all goes together so he IS "the artist"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"vision" it's weak really as they should be a team but that's why bands break up. They forget who helped them along the way.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

They should be given the same credit if not more

9 years ago | Likes 382 Dislikes 4

It's still his concept. Most big artists have assistants helping them. I bet you in the beginning he was painting himself and it grew.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

Really? because some of these would be impossible to do yourself. Maybe basic concepts but the idea is basic.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

His earlier stuff was done mostly indoors where the lighting was consistent so he would have more time to plan and paint it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure. My point was that they should be named too. Team effort after all.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well art these days is more about concept right? There are a ton of people that are just skilled. Sadly they're replaceable.

9 years ago | Likes 96 Dislikes 3

I can come up with ideas. :|

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ideas are replaceable too. It's about both working together.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, but being replaceable shouldn't mean not being recognized either.

9 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 3

They probably get recognized within the art scene and gain carreer Succes. But I don't think they should receive more credit or something.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

Fair enough
