Not to discredit Duane Roller in the slightest, but I won’t read that because who gives a shit what her skin color was. She was a cool gal
The article talks about how the modern day obsession over her race has overshadowed her amazing achievements
That’s the whole point of the article...
I didn’t read it. If you have, can you tell me if it took a stance on her skin color, if no I’ll happily read it
It absolutely talks about her heritage, but Roller emphasizes the ludicrousness of people being more concerned with her skin rather than (1)
her outstanding accomplishments. (2)

Cleopatra was kinda white, though. Not a red-headed Irish chick or anything, but she was of largely Greek descent.

IDK, did she? That'd be pretty neat! The racism she'd face for looking so different only makes her accomplishments even more badass.

Olive skinned & dark haired is likely.
So, Lady Gaga or Angelina Jolie would be great choices based on coloring alone. Other things, though. . .
Tbh, probably. I think Gaga would be far better based on body type & her schnoozle given all her busts show her to have quite the nose. And
TNG I’m over Angelina and after I saw Gaga in ASiB I was impressed and wouldn’t mind seeing her as Cleo.
I concur, Gaga would probably be the better choice of the two.
GodEmperorOfImgur
Not "largely", entirely. The Greek leaders of Egypt only married other Greek leaders. (leading to lots and lots of incest).
An excellent point.
She only had children with two men. Both were Roman. No incest for her, yay!
While true. Her first two husbands were her brothers, Ptolemy XII and Ptolemy XIV.
And she got out of that hot mess as soon as she could, as I recall.
Mapleviking
weren't they 10 or something?
She didn’t have children with them which is where the true issue with incest lies. Especially the more inbreeding there is.
Which is why I started with "while true" :P

And what most people view associate as 'African' - being black - didn't apply to the Egyptians themselves anyway.

CoBr2
Arguments of you're only African if you're black. Realistically the location of Egypt and size of it's empire probably made it super diverse
Also, based on historical data (like Jews being in Egypt) the majority might have looked more Middle Eastern than you'd think.

NobodyWorthThinkingAbout
There's some evidence the Ancient Egyptians were, at the time, notoriously racist against their darker-skinned neighbors...
A lot of that also had to do with issues of Nubian conquest. The Egyptians alternately hired them as mercenaries and lost wars to htem
King Tut had Sandler’s with Nubians painted on them so he could walk on his enemies

Egyptians weren't African, they were the People of the Nile, and are depicted as olive skinned
but Egypt merged with Nubia. And there is still some debate on how much mixing there was, and what original egyptians looked like
But Cleo was mostly greek in any case.
ghostlight
Since Nubia was only part of Egypt for almost 700 years and ruled it for barely 100 I guess that statement is true.
My Egyptian coworker gets super pissed when people say ancient Egyptians were black
TrickyChlovers
How dare you use logic on this platform....shame
Cleopatra was an inbred Macedonian Greek not ethnically Egyptian. It’s said she had blue eyes and dark blonde or auburn hair.
Really, that’s interesting. I haven’t heard the hair colour but. I’ve heard dark haired. Cool.
urukhello
The Greeks had a fair range of “looks” (for whatever definition we settle on for Greek at the time). But def not what we think of in the
Modern day when someone says “African”
See I just thought her hair was medium brown to dark but always knew she was olive skinned at the darkest. I just didn’t know she was ginger
Also Cleo was from greek lineage
allmostthere1234
I spoke with her last week. Shes Mexican.

Macedonian descent, would probably have the look of most Mediterranean peoples - which also are often described as olive-skinned.
PlantainSuperNova
Nubians - "Am I an joke to you"
They (bottom middle) depicted themselves as much darker than Libyans (top left) and Syrians (bottom left) …
albeit lighter than Nubians. Here's another from the tomb of Seti. Libyan (Berber), Nubian, Syrian, Egyptian
The Pharaohs of the Ptolemaic dynasty (including Cleopatra) were of course Mediterranean in appearance. But their predecessors and subjects…
were not only darker skinned than today's post-Arab-conquest North Africans, they also had African features…
judging from their statues. Wide nostrils, full lips etc.
I'm not sure but my white son drew himself and colored his face black and body brown so that'll throw historians4a loop in 2k years.
If you saw this guy in the streets I'm pretty sure you wouldn't think "Oh, he looks kinda Greek".
There's more artwork further down and I'm pretty sure the tomb of Seti wasn't decorated by children. It's also pretty obv from their statues
UnattendedDeviant
How in the hell are Egyptians not African? Was the country separated from the continent at some point in the last 50000 years?
Idk. My phone calendar says I was busy that day at work harvesting wheat.
Ethnically. Not geographically.
Exactly. The problem is so many just see "Black people" and think it's one big culture. The ethnicity varies just like in Europe.
Hell, there are even differences like head shape that across a huge continent. You could most of the US inside the Sahara Desert.
The same could be said about China. But yes, 99% of the time African = Black.
China isn't a continent. Your analogy would use Asia. And then you'll see how Asians differ widely.
Ummm, the ethnic of Africa differs just as mych as Europe. The problem is so many people see just Black people. The cultures differ.
flavivsaetivs
Sub-Saharan African population in Egypt mostly goes up with the Islamic Conquest, alongside the Semetic population (obviously).
attila3000
I doubt that, the Arabs were few. The avg Egyptian peasant looks pretty much the same as 3000 years ago.
It's not about the conquering population, it's about mobility between regions. Lots of interchange happened after that.
Thanks, I did not know that
Nubia was part of Egypt and Nubians straight up ruled the country at one point, but please tell me that no Egyptians were black before islam
For 100 years give or take. Mid 700-600s BC. They promptly started interbreeding, abandoned their culture & adopter Egyptian culture.
I didn't say that at all. I said the Sub-Saharan population went up with the Arab conquest.
Ancient Egypt was actually kinda racist against Sub-Saharan people because of their conflicts with Kush/Nubia to the South of them.
RealScienceMan
Let's be super real here, Ancient "X" was kinda racist, just in general.
Latin Americans?!
ooooooo yes, a lot of em still are, you gotta have lighter or darker skin or some shit, depending on where you're from.
Most cultures thought along the lines of "Us" and "Barbarians" (everyone else) typically. Wasn't usually about skin color.
they were generally xenophobic, but not racist. They hate outsiders but if there is another race inside their kingdom they often embrace it.
but at some point, often there was internal turmoil, and yes racial lines would be drawn. It's always an us vs them dilemma.
Alenelvans
Well she was Greek. So probably a bit white. That rules scarJo out!
LasciviousHedgehog
Hellenic ruling class so Lady Gaga being of Italian heritage would probably work skin tone wise
animal531
So she just needs an Ariana Grande tan job...
She was in fact a member of the Greek ruling class of the Ptolemaic dynasty. She had some Persian ancestry, and a possible African grandma.
But otherwise her entire paternal line and likely much of her maternal line was Greek.
wallbanger
To be fair, it was a pretty straight line so kind of hard to introduce new blood in to the mix.
redstick
Ancient Greeks were actually as white as modern Swedes.
NightPainPoe
She was very likely was faired skinned. Mixed races such as her can result in that.

Rami Malek is Egyptian, he's olive and a great actor. He should be the Cleopatra!

Drewscifer
Weren't the Ptolemaics like super inbred?
V1c70r10us
Yeah but a lot of people think she was a redhead, so, maybe it doesn’t rule the blonde out. Because Hollywood.
The North African race, which includes the Ancient Egyptians, is commonly mistaken for European. So the entire cast should look white.
EwgB
Cleopatra wasn't Ancient Egyptian though, she was Ptolemaic. so of Macedonian Greek ancestry.
But the people she was ruling over were mostly Egyptians. So, a white person ruling over what looks like white people.

Yeah even though the creator of gits said he designed her to look eastern European in the 90's.
So I guess it's fine. I thought she looked appropriately neutral robot-esque in the movie. I'm not gits person myself, just saw the movie.
I recommend the original anime movie. It's on lots of services. Very different themes.
esparadrapo
If there wasn't a really original design like in The Witcher I'd be fine with ScarJo as Motoko. But she doesn't resemble to the original.
She's ok considering how many bodies the major goes through. But again when the creator was asked about it he really liked her as the major.
FlameBeard86
I'm confused. In what way is scarjo not white?
She's part Jewish so technically she's not white, just like Mexicans are not white. Both Jews and Mexicans looks white to me.
GrouchyMarx

matthorn4314012
Problem here is also everyone had a tan year round. Vast majority of people went outside.
They were at most, as white as modern greeks, which are indeed considered white, because it was more fun picking on the extremes. :p
I dated a guy whose dad was Greek and whose mom was Egyptian. His skin was super white. Obviously there are dark-skinned people of both /1
groups too. Basically there's no way to know what Cleopatra would look like because even now if you pick a random Greek they could be /2
super dark or super light. /3
But yeah, tanning, makeup, and her probably nubian grandparent? There's a reason her detractors saying she was black was a credible slur.
ihaveaten
Ptolemaic Dynasty was incredibly insane about keeping their bloodline pure. Like, more than the fictional Targaryens.
thatdamnrat
That was something they copied off the original Pharoh lineages, they weren't unique in that respect
It WAS intended as a slur though, so using that as evidence that she actually was, isn't conclusive. So "Probably whitish" it is.
BlackAssMamaWhiteAssDaddy
“Probably Whitish” sounds like the spinoff of “Mixed-ish” which is the spinoff from “Black-ish” which are both awful
Mediterraneans commonly have a dark complexion, but are still "white" racially. But in the past and different time periods labels moved
TheOvy
Some are pretty white, some look like Jason Mantzoukas, who's often cast as Arab. Mediterranean culture groups are more diverse than
the American understanding of whiteness. To quote the wiki article: "cream to tan or dark brown skin tone; olive complexion." Source below:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_race
UserSubHunterOfIndeterminateGender
Considering she would have taken every opportunity to be as pale as possible, she would have probably not even looked olive skinned.
burlyqlady
Olive skinned doesn't mean dark or tan. It's literally a green tint as opposed to a pink or peach one. Even snow white people can be olive

They also believed the Pharoah was partially possessed by Horus, while his sister the queen held the spirit of the goddess Isis.

Gaga it is then.

Scarlett is only popular because she's hot. I kinda find her acting to be rather bad

Just kinda bad? You are being nice.

Anyone see the one with Joseph Gordon Levitt always jerkin off? Cringe worthy.

She held her own in Marriage Story. And she was acting alongside some powerhouse performances by Adam Driver and Laura Dern.
TheresnoDanaonlyZuul
Best role I’ve seen her in was Marriage Story. That’s it.
TheOneWhoWasLeft
I, too, have only seen her in roles where journalists only ask about her diet and her underwear afterwards.
gaybutte
She straight up doesn't even try.
tatianagreymatter
Except in Jojo Rabbit. She’s actually pretty good in that.
MrSebi
She's good in a few things. But people don't take her seriously cuz of the hotness, so unless she's oscar baiting, she doesn't try.
BurntKittenDriver
Gal Gadot is probably better choice...

Egypt would rage that an IDF stooge would play an Egyptian icon.

According to most accounts that were not propaganda she was not really that hot.

But Gal Gadot can’t really act
Kbantar
She was in Egypt before sun block. I'd prefer someone with a damn tan. Cleopatra traveled. She didn't hide from the sun like a nosferatu.
asimovfanatic
Rich people generally stayed out of the sunlight
Kbantar
Generally, not 100% of the time. You're going to get some tan in Egypt without sunblock unless you live like a vampire if you're this pale.

Grier2217
It doesnt matter, were all useless fleshbags anyway.
ArchAzazel
Not to discredit Duane Roller in the slightest, but I won’t read that because who gives a shit what her skin color was. She was a cool gal
baronMarbleBreaker
The article talks about how the modern day obsession over her race has overshadowed her amazing achievements
baronMarbleBreaker
That’s the whole point of the article...
ArchAzazel
I didn’t read it. If you have, can you tell me if it took a stance on her skin color, if no I’ll happily read it
baronMarbleBreaker
It absolutely talks about her heritage, but Roller emphasizes the ludicrousness of people being more concerned with her skin rather than (1)
baronMarbleBreaker
her outstanding accomplishments. (2)
ArchAzazel

2/2 white. So if your goal was to stop racism, congratz you caused more or it
fairybug
Cleopatra was kinda white, though. Not a red-headed Irish chick or anything, but she was of largely Greek descent.
Lobuttomize
Didn't she actually have reddish hair?
fairybug
IDK, did she? That'd be pretty neat! The racism she'd face for looking so different only makes her accomplishments even more badass.
Tubularballs
Can we stop saying Greek here and start saying Macedonian? The Ptolemaic line, of which Cleo was the last, started with Alexander.
Berethian
It's all Greek to me.
alpacasaurusrex
Olive skinned & dark haired is likely.
fairybug
So, Lady Gaga or Angelina Jolie would be great choices based on coloring alone. Other things, though. . .
alpacasaurusrex
Tbh, probably. I think Gaga would be far better based on body type & her schnoozle given all her busts show her to have quite the nose. And
alpacasaurusrex
TNG I’m over Angelina and after I saw Gaga in ASiB I was impressed and wouldn’t mind seeing her as Cleo.
fairybug
I concur, Gaga would probably be the better choice of the two.
GodEmperorOfImgur
Not "largely", entirely. The Greek leaders of Egypt only married other Greek leaders. (leading to lots and lots of incest).
fairybug
An excellent point.
alpacasaurusrex
She only had children with two men. Both were Roman. No incest for her, yay!
GodEmperorOfImgur
While true. Her first two husbands were her brothers, Ptolemy XII and Ptolemy XIV.
fairybug
And she got out of that hot mess as soon as she could, as I recall.
Mapleviking
weren't they 10 or something?
alpacasaurusrex
She didn’t have children with them which is where the true issue with incest lies. Especially the more inbreeding there is.
GodEmperorOfImgur
Which is why I started with "while true" :P

Arguments of you're only African if you're black. Realistically the location of Egypt and size of it's empire probably made it super diverse

There's some evidence the Ancient Egyptians were, at the time, notoriously racist against their darker-skinned neighbors...

A lot of that also had to do with issues of Nubian conquest. The Egyptians alternately hired them as mercenaries and lost wars to htem

but Egypt merged with Nubia. And there is still some debate on how much mixing there was, and what original egyptians looked like

But Cleo was mostly greek in any case.

Since Nubia was only part of Egypt for almost 700 years and ruled it for barely 100 I guess that statement is true.

Cleopatra was an inbred Macedonian Greek not ethnically Egyptian. It’s said she had blue eyes and dark blonde or auburn hair.
alpacasaurusrex
Really, that’s interesting. I haven’t heard the hair colour but. I’ve heard dark haired. Cool.

Nubians - "Am I an joke to you"
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
They (bottom middle) depicted themselves as much darker than Libyans (top left) and Syrians (bottom left) …
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
albeit lighter than Nubians. Here's another from the tomb of Seti. Libyan (Berber), Nubian, Syrian, Egyptian
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
The Pharaohs of the Ptolemaic dynasty (including Cleopatra) were of course Mediterranean in appearance. But their predecessors and subjects…
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
were not only darker skinned than today's post-Arab-conquest North Africans, they also had African features…
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
judging from their statues. Wide nostrils, full lips etc.
allmostthere1234
I'm not sure but my white son drew himself and colored his face black and body brown so that'll throw historians4a loop in 2k years.
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
If you saw this guy in the streets I'm pretty sure you wouldn't think "Oh, he looks kinda Greek".
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
There's more artwork further down and I'm pretty sure the tomb of Seti wasn't decorated by children. It's also pretty obv from their statues
UnattendedDeviant
How in the hell are Egyptians not African? Was the country separated from the continent at some point in the last 50000 years?
allmostthere1234
Idk. My phone calendar says I was busy that day at work harvesting wheat.
Escapist83
Ethnically. Not geographically.
[deleted]
[deleted]
UnattendedDeviant
Exactly. The problem is so many just see "Black people" and think it's one big culture. The ethnicity varies just like in Europe.
UnattendedDeviant
Hell, there are even differences like head shape that across a huge continent. You could most of the US inside the Sahara Desert.
Escapist83
The same could be said about China. But yes, 99% of the time African = Black.
[deleted]
[deleted]
UnattendedDeviant
China isn't a continent. Your analogy would use Asia. And then you'll see how Asians differ widely.
UnattendedDeviant
Ummm, the ethnic of Africa differs just as mych as Europe. The problem is so many people see just Black people. The cultures differ.
flavivsaetivs
Sub-Saharan African population in Egypt mostly goes up with the Islamic Conquest, alongside the Semetic population (obviously).
attila3000
I doubt that, the Arabs were few. The avg Egyptian peasant looks pretty much the same as 3000 years ago.
flavivsaetivs
It's not about the conquering population, it's about mobility between regions. Lots of interchange happened after that.
attila3000
Thanks, I did not know that
PlantainSuperNova
Nubia was part of Egypt and Nubians straight up ruled the country at one point, but please tell me that no Egyptians were black before islam
alpacasaurusrex
For 100 years give or take. Mid 700-600s BC. They promptly started interbreeding, abandoned their culture & adopter Egyptian culture.
flavivsaetivs
I didn't say that at all. I said the Sub-Saharan population went up with the Arab conquest.
flavivsaetivs
Ancient Egypt was actually kinda racist against Sub-Saharan people because of their conflicts with Kush/Nubia to the South of them.
RealScienceMan
Let's be super real here, Ancient "X" was kinda racist, just in general.
manolyk23
Latin Americans?!
RealScienceMan
ooooooo yes, a lot of em still are, you gotta have lighter or darker skin or some shit, depending on where you're from.
flavivsaetivs
Most cultures thought along the lines of "Us" and "Barbarians" (everyone else) typically. Wasn't usually about skin color.
Csel
they were generally xenophobic, but not racist. They hate outsiders but if there is another race inside their kingdom they often embrace it.
Csel
but at some point, often there was internal turmoil, and yes racial lines would be drawn. It's always an us vs them dilemma.
Alenelvans
Well she was Greek. So probably a bit white. That rules scarJo out!
LasciviousHedgehog
Hellenic ruling class so Lady Gaga being of Italian heritage would probably work skin tone wise

Alenelvans
She was in fact a member of the Greek ruling class of the Ptolemaic dynasty. She had some Persian ancestry, and a possible African grandma.
Alenelvans
But otherwise her entire paternal line and likely much of her maternal line was Greek.
wallbanger
To be fair, it was a pretty straight line so kind of hard to introduce new blood in to the mix.
redstick
Ancient Greeks were actually as white as modern Swedes.
NightPainPoe
She was very likely was faired skinned. Mixed races such as her can result in that.
bootenvon
So Jason Mantzoukas?

Rami Malek is Egyptian, he's olive and a great actor. He should be the Cleopatra!

Drewscifer
Weren't the Ptolemaics like super inbred?
V1c70r10us
Yeah but a lot of people think she was a redhead, so, maybe it doesn’t rule the blonde out. Because Hollywood.
NobodyWorthThinkingAbout
The North African race, which includes the Ancient Egyptians, is commonly mistaken for European. So the entire cast should look white.
EwgB
Cleopatra wasn't Ancient Egyptian though, she was Ptolemaic. so of Macedonian Greek ancestry.
NobodyWorthThinkingAbout
But the people she was ruling over were mostly Egyptians. So, a white person ruling over what looks like white people.

Jimoar
I recommend the original anime movie. It's on lots of services. Very different themes.
esparadrapo
If there wasn't a really original design like in The Witcher I'd be fine with ScarJo as Motoko. But she doesn't resemble to the original.
Jimoar
She's ok considering how many bodies the major goes through. But again when the creator was asked about it he really liked her as the major.
FlameBeard86
I'm confused. In what way is scarjo not white?
Oliv1
She's part Jewish so technically she's not white, just like Mexicans are not white. Both Jews and Mexicans looks white to me.
GrouchyMarx
It's a joke. ScarJo portrayed a Japanese character. This is all criticism towards white actors being chosen to portray non-white characters.
bibsen2000

InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
super dark or super light. /3
NiceGreenArrows
But yeah, tanning, makeup, and her probably nubian grandparent? There's a reason her detractors saying she was black was a credible slur.
ihaveaten
Ptolemaic Dynasty was incredibly insane about keeping their bloodline pure. Like, more than the fictional Targaryens.
thatdamnrat
That was something they copied off the original Pharoh lineages, they weren't unique in that respect
NiceGreenArrows
It WAS intended as a slur though, so using that as evidence that she actually was, isn't conclusive. So "Probably whitish" it is.
BlackAssMamaWhiteAssDaddy
“Probably Whitish” sounds like the spinoff of “Mixed-ish” which is the spinoff from “Black-ish” which are both awful
Csel
Mediterraneans commonly have a dark complexion, but are still "white" racially. But in the past and different time periods labels moved
TheOvy
Some are pretty white, some look like Jason Mantzoukas, who's often cast as Arab. Mediterranean culture groups are more diverse than

the American understanding of whiteness. To quote the wiki article: "cream to tan or dark brown skin tone; olive complexion." Source below:

Considering she would have taken every opportunity to be as pale as possible, she would have probably not even looked olive skinned.

Olive skinned doesn't mean dark or tan. It's literally a green tint as opposed to a pink or peach one. Even snow white people can be olive
