It's been almost 4 years since we adopted him, and EVERY encounter with another dog has been a disaster. He was a bait dog used for fighting, so instead of learning that other dogs are his friends, he learned that other dogs are going to hurt him, and he's been an awful mix of emotions and reactions with some extreme fear-based aggression. When he wasn't growling at dogs to "GET THE F**K AWAY FROM ME," he was cowering and trembling with fear.

I've been working non-stop to teach him that other dogs are "buddies" and have finally gotten him to the point where he can sit and wave hello when I ask him, "What do we do when we see a buddy?" Or when I ask if he wants to "say hello to the buddy!"

Today I brought a little buddy home for a few hours, and after some initial awkwardness (my pup has no concept of personal space; the poor little pup got annoyed a few times) we were able to go for a walk together, and they were able to lie next to each other on my bed (the muzzle was removed once the excitement died down).

It's not ideal, but it's a fuckton of progress from where he started.

You are amazing. This dog is so lucky to have you and your patience. I hope great things come to you and your pup gets to a zen place

OMG! You are doing great work! Thank you and keep it up!

7 years ago | Likes 109 Dislikes 4

Well thank you. Do you keep like pepper spray or something around to break up a fight if it happens?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Thank you for not giving up. Humans hurt him and now he has to unlearn all that hurt. I hope he learns gentle and kind is now in his life

Great work!

Unfortunately no matter how much work is done this pup can never be trusted alone with another dog. PTSD is very real in dogs as well.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Omg! Thank you for having the patience to help these sweet misunderstood digs

You're a pretty wonderful person. I hope you truly know that core deep and completely. Because you are. Lovely pup and buddy pup.

Our cat was bullied by all the others at the breeder's house. She hid for the first few days. Now she's a snugglebug. Well done #OP

I really admire your perseverance and your undying love for this little screwball. Your buddy looks really cute and keep up the progress! Yo

Get a basket muzzle, like racing greyhounds and police dogs wear. Allows for panting and drinking water while preventing bites.

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

They make some really soft nylon basket muzzles. Safe for biters and comfy too.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And because they are nylon, they can dry and clean quickly.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Safety first, and you didn’t give up. Good on you, bro.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cheers to you and that beautiful pupper! I work with a jack Russell rescue and I applaud your progress.

7 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 3

Jack Russels are another level of crazy I imagine

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

They're incredibly sweet dogs and super loyal. If you can manage their energy they take to training well, can also be bags of nerves though

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine is a real jerk to her buddy. Mega mood swings.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No bad dogs, just bad pack leaders. I'm dealing with a JRT the previous owners thought of putting down for aggression, it's fear biting.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We need to go Thunderdome on the asses of those that breed/train fighting dogs/baitdogs/puppy mills.

You’re so awesome. A lot of folks would have given up. I pray you have many years of love and happiness with your furry friend.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Honest question. Weren't you concerned for the other dog when removing the muzzle? Incase I find myself in a similar situation.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Really admire your commitment! Great job.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My razor gatti is the opposite he loves everything and everyone. He was a bate dog that was found in a raid with ether gunshot wonds or -

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+ stab wonds. The previous owners were moving to FL and couldn't take him too cuz his breed. We got him and he would not stop trying to -

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+"hug" everyone he meet.still does to this day. I have to say @op thank you for being a awesome dog owner and hope it works out in the end

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I admire and applaud your commitment. You are succeeding where others (including me) would not have tried. Well done you.

7 years ago | Likes 1200 Dislikes 3

Heck some cities just make it illegal just to own the breed. One i know of puts them down after 3 days too if you don't move them.

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Sounds like maryland

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kinda sad ,since ik some that are absolute sweethearts and really its the owners alot of the time that fail these dogs not their genetics.

There’s a case of a pit service dog from an out of towner that was grabbed by police while the guy was driving through Denver and killed-

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He’s obviously suing now. But the policeman said “those dogs are banned in city limits and I have a right”.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for not giving up on him. Thank you for your forgiveness, mercy, and discipline

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

You are undoubtedly a good person. Thank you!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's a really good way to get a dog killed.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 6

Ignorsnt comment.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

1. No, its not. I work with dogs every single day, many of them rescues. A dog aggressive dog should not be unmuzzled around a new dog

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

2. hours after meeting, ESPECIALLY on their home turf.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

People that don’t see improperly bred/raised Pits as loaded weapons left lying around are why Pit owners can’t have nice things.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 8

Yup. These stories always end badly but everyone wants to pretend like cute pictures deny reality.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

And then some time later you think you'

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 6

re at a point where you can take the muzzle off and boom, someones doggie gets ripped to pieces.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

That's what I was worrying about. Dogs escape -- people leave gates and doors open by accident. Things happen.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yup. and pitbulls are crazy strong and able to scale all kinds of shit when they get mad (which happens frequently and randomly). Dangerous.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

My little female pittie has been with me for 5 years, and she is still dog aggressive. However, we got her a puppy, and she loves him.

7 years ago | Likes 466 Dislikes 10

My female Belgian malinois hates every dog except our gsd. It's going to be a lot of work to get her to calm down and not be so aggressive.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why do you not have pictures!

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I love that it's her puppy

7 years ago | Likes 142 Dislikes 1

Aw mine is the same way. She is dog aggresive but i brought a boy pit puppy home and she loves him. They are forever together 8 years later.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But of mine are. I think it has to do with not enough socialization as pups and their need to protect. But we are making progress :)

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can socialize all you want same as us but if they don’t like a dog they will attack :( it’s so sad because they are the sweetest dogs

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Educate yourself as best you can. Lots of excellent dog training videos on YouTube. Hiring a trainer to teach you what to do is awesome.

7 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

One of my best friends is 6 months in with her pit mix who was extremely dog aggressive. Hes playing with other dogs now.

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

My two braincells read that as '6 months pregnant with her pit mix'. V confused for a second. Own stupidity aside, that is super awesome!!!

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Any recommendations for how to get a dog calm? Vida sites etc. I've a sharpei pit cross that's 16months old. We got him 5 weeks ago and 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 found out he'd never been outside for a walk so we're constantly on edge with him. He lunges at everything.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hes on edge 90% because YOU are on edge. They take cues from us. I've helped several friends with this. Hire a professional to help..

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Use a harness if you're not already, please. Less likely to cause throat/neck injuries. Also, short leashes might help.

I spent 2 days this week at the vet, and I'm horrified at how many people assume all cats and dogs are friendly. Even if they ARE friendly,

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

I agree, never assume a dogs friendly, picking up on the dogs queues is something you can only learn with experience. Still good dogs tho

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4) almost broke out right there. You're doing good, and this is an important lesson that all dogs don't consider everyone buddies.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

3) act aggressively while sick. And I saw a girl lead her German shepherd up to a dog without asking if the other dog was cool. A fight...

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

2) the vet is full of sick scared animals! I had to tell a woman to get her toddler away from my cat bc I couldn't guarantee he wouldn't...

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

rule of thumb answer to does you dog bite? "She has never bitten anyone before, but she has teeth and she might". Most people leave her be

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Excellent answer!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(1)I had a few encounters like that. I now have 1 that's not friendly all the time so I hate when people with friendly dogs let them run up

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

(2)run up to her. IDC if yours is, mines on a short leash for a reason. I picked her up for a reason!

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah if the other dogs on a lead you shouldn't let your dog go up to it tbh. It's a solid way to end up with a bad interaction

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Normally I will look at the owners facial expressions before letting my doggo approach, if they look chill I'll let him get kinda close(1/2)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To see how they're both gonna react before letting him get close enough for contact. My pup is super excited so older dogs can be grumpier

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which is totally cool and I get that. If it's clear they're not going to get on I'll just pull him back or pick him up depending

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you haven’t already, r/reactivedogs is amazing also I have a great training. My boxer mix was v dog aggressive and in a yr he has -

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

**great trainer I can give you

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks! We have a staffy who is incredibly sweet but walks are a nightmare.

Having a reactive dog is horribly difficult. Henry is my first and I didn’t realize the kind of planning and stuff I was going to have to-

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Put into every outing. So stressful. He’s much better now though. I feel your pain!!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s encouraging to know you’ve had success, I’ve been browsing the Reddit page and sent it to my husband. She used to get along great with
