"Trust me, i'm an engineer" dump

Mar 16, 2016 4:20 PM

Front page, hurray! I'm stuck at a boring-ass seminar: Send st. Patrick's day boobs, puppies, or just a conversation starters to save me from listening to a lecture about financial statements. Please.

The lawnmower on a crane is a serious wtf. :)

It looks like a collage of Nick Miller's greatest accomplishments. http://imgur.com/zTnQLtj

Some of these are downright genius. Some of these downright batshit stupid.

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Some of them actually perform the desired function. Others are just... a joke, I hope. That candle is only going to heat the first 5 oz.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It will break off the rushed pipe before it heats any water.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

i was going to say that lol i have the same card and it sags like a mofo. I use a custom brace my friend cut from Plexiglas.

BREAKING NEWS: Earlier today, the worker in #15 was beaten to death by coworkers chanting, "The crinkling must stop.

10 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 1

That's a glass bottle. ... The marble might get annoying though

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 12

What is this dildo bottle thing I'm looking at?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is an Asian style of pop, or fizz drink. It has a glass marble near the top that makes the seal, and you open it by pushing it in.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not the right shape either..

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Blue cap =/= same bottle

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

#4 actually took some intelligent foresight

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Found a fix, complied with the law. No problem

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This does NOT comply with the law. Definitely wouldn't pass a DOT inspection.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The pill bottle was a clever idea.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Where there is a will, and materials... there's a way.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Why do I automatically assume that at least about half of these were found in Russia?

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

This is why they should have never been trusted with nuclear energy.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Because it's a safe assumption.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

There's a lot of crazy stuff going on in Russia

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's not stupid if it works!

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 3

It's not stupid if it works and it's SAFE. (So some of these are not stupid.)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But a significant number of these are still stupid.

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

A bunch of these are really fucking stupid. All of the repurposed drills are either damaging the drill or whatever you stuck in there.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

If it works, but there is a significant chance of failure leading to property/tool damage, or injury/death, then it's likely stupid.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Judging by the waterlogged nature of that book, I'm guessing the retractable leash in #23 didn't work out too well.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

They're probably get lazy about drying their hands when they wanna touch the book too.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or it was created to prevent further water logging.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Earlier prototypes had teething issues which resulted in failure at times.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

*ahem* Kerbal

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not fixing things I'm unbreaking them!!!!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This comment is underrated

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did #6 not see the larger ladder in the room at the bottom of the stairs?

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

I didn't until your comment.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

neither did they

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would you set a ladder on a set of stairs?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They probably tried that one first, but the stairs are only wide enough to support one leg.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good eye! That makes it even better...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

#29 As if bike seats weren't uncomfortable enough

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

That actually might be more comfortable than my current bike seat. :-/

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That ladder is such a terrible idea. "Trust me Long Term Disability is just like Vacation."

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 9

As a former electrician I've had to use a ladder like that quite often. Very useful! But being up on a ladder is never really fun for me.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's actually less likely to slip than most ladders, the barrier stops any movement and it's forming a triangle, it's pretty fuckin stable

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

My concern was him balancing on that. A friend broke his ankle doing that same thing.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

the ladder is probably quite stable.. it can't slide back due to the railing. the only issue would be if the legs broke/folded.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but that's what worries me. If that leg folds in, it would be fine, but I still worry...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Is it worth the risk, though? You could just do "trust me, I'm an engineer" to make a longer paint brush or roller.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

THAT'S WHAT I JUST SAID except the last part which you just said. So, all in all it evens out.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whats with that Bra and the AC duct?

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

i was thinking to direct the cold air but then again drying it faster might be the answer

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Yo, dude, turn on the heat. It's a little chilly bra!"

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

This is my favorite answer.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I thought it was channeling the air from the AC upwards at first, but maybe its so simple as just drying it after a wash..

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Seriously. This is the only one I don't understand too.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

my first thought was titty sweat

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Asking the real questions, here.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I thought it was a heater and the bra was to make it "hotter" LOL

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it's to dry it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was looking for this comment and no reply :( Someone send help!!!1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's to direct air onto the thermostat, We do something similar at work with a candle to trick the thermostat into turning on the air

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bra dryer. You're not supposed to use the tumble-dryer for bra's because of the wire.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Air freshener.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, drying it quickly. I'm not sure how well it would work but it would probably be a little faster.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a female, it's to dry the bra. I used to hang my non dryer clothes from a hanger on a push pin above the baseboard heaters.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude no... You ever have a vent blow cold air directly on your neck and want to prevent it? Bra displaces air for someone directly beliw it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To dry it quickly maybe? You aren't supposed to put them in the dryer. Or maybe it's super hot and a lady wants to put on a cold bra.

i put mine in the dryer :o

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Who can afford a BMW X5 but not a new rear wiper?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Early X5's can be had for under $10k used which seems like a great bargain until you have to replace something that falls off.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh just noticed the Russian license plate. That also explains a little bit of it lol

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

a whole lottle

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it looks stupid but it works, it ain't --wait, is that pillar being held with plastic wrap?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The plastic wrap on the brick pillar tho...

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The actual support in that is a metal pole inside the pillar. Plastic just keeps the remaining brick chunks more contained

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And wrap is a lot stronger than it's given credit for when it's layered.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Omg that candle. How slow would water have to come out for that to work?

10 years ago | Likes 785 Dislikes 5

Given how crudded up that shower head is, I'm not sure it would be capable of running any faster than what the candle needs?

10 years ago | Likes 346 Dislikes 1

Very, water has a pretty high specific heat. (takes a lot of energy to warm it up)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty darn slow Cotton. Pretty darn slow.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

It's a bold move. Let's see how it plays out for him.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I sure do like pumpkins, Cotton.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Very.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty slow. Like less than 30 speed for sure.

10 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 4

But what about 25 speed? It's faster than that, right?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Assuming that's perhaps somewhere in Russia - those poor bastards

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I was assuming they had to heat the metal to expand the neck so it could be removed?

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

I thought it was to de-ice the pipe.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Tree Fidy

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

It's likely to help prevent freezing rather than actually warm the water for showering.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's obviously heating the water in the pipe all the way back to the defective central heater, which too has a bumfire under it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That one mad me feel sad

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A candle is roughly 300 BTUs most water heaters are 40kbtu so it's not heating it up much at all.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

bout 30.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd say its only supposed to affect the first few seconds. Like, you have hot water but don't like that cold start to the shower.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My first thought was that you let the candle heat the pipe for a considerable amount of time and THEN turn on water for a lukewarm effect

10 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 6

And even if it could, the rapid temp change from the cold water and the hot pipe would cause it to crack then burst the pipe.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Yeah, for the few seconds it takes for the passing water to completely cool any accumulated heat. Then it's cold again.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Aha! A candle releases on average 70W energy. Specific Heat water 1 Cal/cc. 1 Cal = 4.184 J . 1 W = 1 J/S. It would be a cold shower.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the one that made beer come out my nose

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

give me a temp u want the water to be and i will tell u

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A+ for efforts tho

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They have to be so poor that they had this as their only option. Rather sad really

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But they have a digital camera too, which is nice.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Or they took the picture as a joke, since this wouldn't heat the water any appreciable amount.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

!. Light candle 2. Unfreeze pipe 3. Take cold shower 4. Feel ALIIIIIIVVVVEEEEEEE! (or shoot self, not sure)

It's fine if you're a mouse.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You sir, are the real mvp

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

get metric or get out. seriously how can you engineer anything like that?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

If you can't use CGS, MKS, and Freedom Units you're not a real engineer.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well, it's not that hard since you can do unit-aware calculations in mathcad and other programs. the SI-System is just better

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Both systems are arbitrary.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Professional engineer

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey, who you calling a student? Kootos on the PE. I stopped with my FE because I'm lazy, and my state/industry doest really require one.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

Kudos. o.o

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Engineers are good at maths not spelling...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Why do you then use silly units like BTU and Fahrenheit?

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

PE=Professional Engineer. Assuming in the US. So working with American technology, which is most often rated using non-SI units.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cause 'Merica. We'll switch to metric (maybe) when they start selling 5x10 lumber and 25 mm pipes locally

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You are forgetting that the pipe can be heated up beforehand over quite a long distance within the wall, and the initial temp of the water

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What I thought

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Negligible, as any repair plumber trying to solder wet piping can tell you -- and look again, I started at 40°F for a 60° rise :)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The lack of metric measurements hurts my soul

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Freedom units or GTFO.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The lego holding the heavy video card... I might actually try that. XD

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'm gonna do that tomorrow. Looks like the same card as mine (STRIX GTX970) and the sag has always worried me, couldn't think of a solution

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same card, worried me too! I am currently using a thick rubber band. Just enough tension to take off some of the weight but not pull up.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's incredibly common.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#6 is pretty structurally sound. He even has a guy holding the base of the ladder for added security. He should be just fine.

10 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 3

I look just like him, people see that and think it's me all the time

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The real crime here is the diarrhea-with-milk colour they're putting on the wall. In glossy, no less. Very 80s juvenile detention center.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also, if the legs were to shift into the gaps of the rungs, or if the decorative wood planks broke, the entire structure would collapse.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I guarantee he's not paid enough to make that risk worth it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it still made me think "wtf are they doing?!"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those ladders aren't rated for horizontal stress testing, it's structurally sound, visually. The direction stress is applied is important.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

How about a rating for fear

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Glad someone else put this here. I mean, I've insulated like that before, but it doesn't mean i should have done it.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I always wonder when those are included in "NSFW" posts. Like yeah it's not a good idea, but it's not like it's just gonna collapse

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Where I work you would absolutely be fired if someone saw you doing that.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's bc the ladder is designed to have the weight resting on the feet, not the middle of the ladder.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But he could just buy a roller extension thing, right? Cheaper than the hospital.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

or unscrew a broomstick handle

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Came here to find this comment. That was my first thought. A roller is like 7 bucks at Home Depot

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I didn't even know they made extensions for those. Not that I would have ever ever ever gotten on that ladder.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
