And there doesn't seem to be enough tower on tower porn sites out there...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well there's SOME tower on tower but I mean....Have you seen when clocktowers get down? Oh man, they are diiiiiiiirty. Let me tell you. Hawt

Why so many nuclear cooling towers? Serious question.

11 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 8

They're just cooling towers. Power stations have them regardless of the fuel. Nuke, coal, gas, etc.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're called hyperbolic aka natural draft cooling towers, used at coal, chemical, and nuclear plants. It's a public misconception.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

wiki says hyperboloid, but thanks for clearing up that they are not just for nuclear plants.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where I live (UK) those are all over on coal plants (which tend to be old) so I'm with notme222 on this

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Coal. Second last one was in Cape Town watched it live. Too old and unstable to re commission. Seriously lol'd at the windmill one.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And they dropped so fast we almost missed it. Someone had a high frame rate ;-)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess that most of them is from germany. In few years t hey have replaced lot of nuclear plants with coal and wind power.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I though Germany was using a lot of solar power, not going back to coal...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

They did run down most of nuclear ans solar won't fill the need. So they had to start using more coal. Thats what i have heard/read.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for explaining rather than just downvoting.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not necessarily nuclear. Coal burning power plants have cooling towers as well.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I guess they're just too cool.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nuclear power plants have a finite operating life.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

All major industrial structures have a finite operating life.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

probably in germany, they are decommissioning them all :(

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Best answer I've gotten. Thank you.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup, genuinely concerned too. *Looks to journo scouring reddit for investigative integrity*......*Journo gets distracted by Perez Hilton*.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Either to repair, upgrade, or they are relocating

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nuclear towers are generally small dome structures. Those are coal/gas. My dad worked at a nuke plant.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

The domes are pressurized water reactors. If you see a cube, it's a boiling water reactor! TMYK!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The domes you're thinking of are containment vessels, not cooling towers

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The hyperboloid cooling towers are often associated with nuclear power plants,[1] -wiki

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

And these are often associated with OP's mom

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are a lot of power plants that use cooling towers like that, so it could be coal or something too.

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Most of these gifs are from an advert for clean energy, where it shows happy coal and nuclear towers getting demolished.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah yes, nuclear power, definitely *NOT* one of the cleanest and by far most efficient power sources we have, or anything like that. /s

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It'll take a whole lot more than three wind turbines to replace a coal or a nuclear plant though.....

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There you go using logic again! You will never understand the eco movement!

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not to mention wind and solar powerplants need traditional powerplants to back them up anyway...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I was wondering he same thing, though my guess is they're coal plant cooling towers and we're moving away from that.

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Apart fm Australia where we burn as much coal as possible. We are so smart. SMRT. I mean SMART.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

*Whilst the Chinese move towards that at the speed of sound.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Maybe because a lot of them are defunct and are being demolished?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

by why are so many defunct. seems weird

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Plants have a lifespan. If a plant of any type is shut down, eventually you move to demolition. Nuke takes a lot longer though.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My guess would be negative public image, but really it's not something I know much about.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but they shouldn't be failing if they are only a few decades old...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lifespan. They don't last forever.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I studies EnergY Asset Management and I can't think of any reason to blow up the cooling towers at a power plant other than they are failing

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't know, but they're not just for nuke. they're called parabolic cooling towers. Used by coal, gas, and sometimes chemical.

11 years ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 2

almost every coal-fired plant has them here in the uk

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

and yes, also for nuclear, but not all nuclear plants have them, and not all cooling towers are parabolic!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Fl. I lived near a nuke plant that didn't have parabolic towers, they were cylindrical with dome roofs.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those are containment buildings, sir/ma'am. That's where the reactor goes. Cooling towers are tertiary cooling devices.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Quite right. Many stations are built along large bodies of water, and use that to cool the turbine's condenser.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can verify seeing them on chemical plants.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Google say hyperboloid. and that they're used for nuclear and chemical... I've never seen one on a gas or coal plant....

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

Can be used for any fuel source, it doesn't matter; used to cool the steam and pump it back into the turbine.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are used on most coal fired plants in Australia. Some use wooden cooling stacks but that has a larger footprint. Ex-station engineer

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Definitely used for coal stations all over the world.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're on most coal plants here, very efficient style of cooling.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All fossil fuel power plants need cooling, and unless they happen to be located by an abundant cool water source, they'll usually get this

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Right, anything that produces a lot of heat since discharging hot water into a river or lake tends to upset the local ecosystem. 1/

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Source: used to work for FirstEnergy and we used them on coal and nuclear plants. 2/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also being lake cooled puts you prey to the lake. DC Cook went offline when over a million fish swam into their screenhouse. Damn alewives.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We've got one here in New Zealand on a geothermal plant (at least that's what they tell us....)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 for conspiracy theory. and hi from Canada

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've always heard them called parabolic, which might be a symptom of "fuck it, close enough" terminology. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

11 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Beaver Valley NPP, and Bruce Mansfield Coal plant. Side by side.

11 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Bruce Mansfield is interesting BTW they capture the ash and turn it into burn resistant (and naturally radioactive) drywall XD. Recycling!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Asbestos?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It seems there's little objection to erecting towers in Beaver Valley.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

did.. did you make that?

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Snagged off google maps and threw arrows and words on in paint. Sue me. It proves the point. three AM yo.
