A long time ago … I was watching Return of the Jedi on cable with my dad, who’d never seen it. He’d only ever seen the first movie. And when it got to the end and Luke helps Darth Vader his helmet so that the son might look upon his father‘s face for the first time, my own father, in a voice of shock and sincere astonishment, said “That’s not James Earl Jones!“
Prequels were so DUMB. Lucas was delusional to think he could just write a script with no support. If Vader was going to be redeemable we needed to see how the Darkside takes over. Show me how from his perspective the younglings look like demons, or he’s in a red haze of murderous black outs and randomly comes back to realise what he’s doing. Show me how he’s trying to resist and there’s conflict there. What if we thought he killed those kidlets and the learned he just smashed all their sabers?
Lucas just thought he was going to make everyone cry with his tragic love story that tried to make the whole thing about. Anakin meets the girl as a kid and is smitten. They fall in love as fate puts them together. His fall is so tragic she literally dies from sadness. Too bad he steam rolled over all established lore and ignored all plot logic to get his undercooked love story out with a great big “NYYYOOOOOOOO” at the end.
Did i ever tell you the story of Darth InSidious, the financial comitee master. He had such a connection to the dark side of the force, that he could revive any corpse any closed story, to fuck with them on screen and nobody could stop him?
I'm so tired of this revisionist narrative that disney ruined star wars when I was fucking there and saw with my own eyes lucas releasing jarjar lolipops. Star wars has always been a commercial product before a story and shitting on the franchise has been a virtue signal "I'm not like the other nerds!" thing since return of the jedi first came out and people called it the teddybear jamboree dismissively.
I found the prequels frustrating as well… I think og trilogy was fairly successful on its own innovative merit. Everything that came after was to sell Lego and video games and lunch boxes.
Ayup, its just fun space fantasy, it never was that deep, not even the first movies, those are special because of the time they are from and their great practical effects, but lets not pretend it was some kind of storytelling masterpiece or anything, never was, never will be
And this is not specific to disney. Huge cooperation structures are unable to produce what the audience actually craves- artistic, vision driven, new material using the old material as backdrop or decoration. Its actually funny, people goto disney first - when it could be ANY media company out there.
People don't know what any of those things mean. Genuinely big swings are hated, creativity is despised. The success of media is vibes based and it always has been. Andor, and rogue one, are honestly terrible entries to star wars because their tone and approach to the material are at odds with the rest of the franchise. All I can think the entire time is how this fascist empire will only be toppled because the evil wizards chosen one son will 360 no scope the bad guys.

The novelization for RotJ has an incredible depiction of Vader's death that hits even harder after the Prequels... try and find it if you can

TheYearsWontStopComing
Young me thought the reason for a different actor was that James Earl Jones didn't want to wear that costume because it looked uncomfortable

I miss when he still had eyebrows.
F1yingFox
So does he. Which is probably where a lot of his anger comes from.

I prefer Eleven from Stranger Things management of “last moments of regret before death from your poor father figure” https://media3.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTY1YjkxZmJlMWs1NDlxNXpuZjJ0YWc1Nm5vY3lxaTBibGNnOGV3cmY4ZTlyOTQ0eSZlcD12MV9naWZzX3NlYXJjaCZjdD1n/3o6fJch36epLqqWkg0/giphy.mp4

Everytime they release a new season of this show it’s been such a long time I don’t remember the story of the previous season.

Happy sounds. He was a shitbag from day one, fuck Vader, I’m glad he died with a failed redemption arc over his head.

I'm imagining some decades in the future someone remaking the trilogy with these deeper nuances into the characters
Freeflare
Maybe no and go away.
TheMadDutchman
Fun fact: that's just the novelizations. All the good stories, world building, and characters, none of the shitty acting, direction, and cgi.
NairouTryyshokk
Do like lotr extended cuts?
xizar
Hopefully Disney no longer has any involvement with the franchise.
Aloralenlunai
We can only hope. Most remakes are never as good as the originals. Fingers crossed, I guess.
ADMNtek
Remember when he murdered all those children.
SavageMyStarAnise
But he did it to save his love's life. So you get a pass for that.

Good times!

When you film the redemption before you've decided the specifics of what he's done.

ADMNtek doesn’t care about Sand People.

Yep. That's why he's mourned, but not forgiven.
JustAnInternetPerson
Didn't he join the force and became a space ghost? Kinda sounds like being forgiven.

Yeah. Yeah, he did.
