I miss watching it with my dad, he watched them all and was a big fan of kirk and Jean luc. I always wanted to dress up as a klingon with him and go to a con but fucking cancer showed up one day
Had they started out with SNW, the nuTrek shows wouldn't have half the hate they got. The most disappointing thing though was the imagined "need" to upgrade the 23rd century designs, basically retconning TOS— even SNW, as close as it's been to the TOS time period, does only a half okay job. Frankly, if we could NEVER set anything pre-TOS EVER AGAIN, that'd be great. Also there's like a span of 50 YEARS post TOS we know NOTHING about. Quit fucking with cannon and go play THERE, Kurtzman. Ugh.
Omg I over heard this woman at work say “oh sorry I’m not a trekie” after this guy explained his joke was a Star Wars reference. I could hear the nerd in him dying. He didn’t even correct her, lol.
I tried to get into SNW, and they Almost have it... but they still aren't quite there. A Huge reason Trek's charm worked so well is that it all had a feel of community theater, to where you could really tell that they weren't working on a huge budget most of the time. Like when you see computer screens that are "actually there", but are just lexan with christmas lights behind them. Or the walls that astute people can spot where the prop guy got the stuff to build them.
(In early TNG, the control station for the transporter room used a trifold foam design for its walls. That's a cheap sound deadening foam, you can still get it online to this day. THAT kind of thing.)
My biggest gripe is their incessant need to dabble in the past and "upgrade" the look. When I was watching TNG, DS9, VOY, & ENT, those design teams WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY to try and recreate specific time periods in Trek ("Trials & Tribbleations", "Flashback", "In A Mirror Darkly..."). It gave a wonderful sense of world building and inherent connection to the previous shows and movies. Sure there wasn't a budget for upgrades, but they wouldn't have wanted to do IT, because of the respect for TOS.
The charm of the black carbord sheets in the computer panels in TNG to block out the studio lights. Ah... the joys of Hi def versions of older shows...
That was like 90% of the fun. The fact that some fans could look at an episode and recreate the bridge in their garage and shoot a fan film and have it look pretty much just like the real thing.
Well, Gorn were never really explored in anything but one episode of TOS and the Mirror Episode of Enterprise, so I see the appeal in the TOS era. But the Gorn Hegemony HAS been explored in the books, and given them a far richer history and social structure than what is being done to it.
It didn't need to be "they're really a parasite, that can only exist by predating on a host species," because then that demands the question be asked on "How did they survive on their own homeworld, and why can they parasitize humans as well?" Its like how Enterprise tried to justify away Worf's joke in a DS9 episode about Klingon skull ridges. Its adding unnecessary complexity when you don't need to. Gorn are lizards. They just can lay eggs...and then grow like any other life form.
True! And there was a whole comic book series about the Hegemonic Eggs being kept safe from a Gorn Warlord by Picard & Co during the Dominion War that was great! Just do shit like that. I'm sure the author would be tickled pink to bring that great story to screen.
Yeah, exactly! We're seeing in Trek the same bizarre thing that's happening to Star Wars, the refusal to adapt high quality novels and stories that provide a huge amount of material, just to make the series different. Its like why they changed the Klingon's appearance and language. They did it just because they felt like it.
This actually made me question a few things, what kind of Music is Popular for Klingon's? Opera? Jazz? Rap? Same question for Vulcan's, Romulan's, what does Bajoran Pop sound like? Cardassian Folk music. I both wanna know and am horrified to find out.
Like I'm just curious what 'original' types of music these kinds of cultures would have made, what ones from other cultures they liked and adapted to their own. Like Imagine Klingon Rap Battles. :P
The only musical I'll willingly sit through anymore is the Buffy musical episode, and even that pushes the limits of willful suspension of disbelief and reasonability. And I have a degree in theatre.
I appreciated it. Nobody tried to be cool or winked at the camera, they played it serious. It helped move forward a lot of emotional work that had been building (Chapel/Spock, Kirk/La'an, Number One's Keeping Secrets and Uhura's I Keep us Connected). The whole "space anomaly made this happen" was just as plausible as Q or the Holodeck or Gangster Planet. I dunno, I had fun.
Honestly, the musical felt like the more plausible explanation for the real secret agenda here, which is "We need to force everyone to be like, painfully honest with each other for an hour or we're never going to be able to resolve all the drama we've got cooking."
I still haven't seen SNW. Pretty much everything I've heard about it has been the kinda shit I want to hear about Star Trek, but STD and The Picard Show burned me REAL bad, and I'm afraid. If I watch it and it also sucks, that's 3 in a row, pretty much guarantees that live-action Star Trek is done(at least, it won't ever be for trekkies again). As long as I procrastinate, though, it stays in a state of flux where it could be good, so there's still hope for the future.
I will be the voice of dissent and say that, no its... not that good. Everyone talks through quips like a bad Whedon movie, episodes are made with drama in mind with awful science that an elementary schooler would find lackluster (I know older treks were bad, but not THIS bad) for example the Enterprise has doors directly into space without airlocks. And complete utter disregard to previous canon.
I recommend "Lower Decks" instead for your cannon fix. In this new era of Trek, cannon is up for grabs and respect for TOS era is out the window, for live action. Most are humor infused, yes, but it NEVER leaves you going, "That wasn't Star Trek." Unfortunately if you want well written Trek for anything nowadays, you'll have to look for old TrekLit books from 1980-2016.
Oh, I LOVE Lower Decks. I initially only gave it a chance to earn the right to shit on it(I may be an asshole, but I DO have standards), and it won me over almost immediately. If you were to check my Facebook for that day, you could witness my ascent from cynicism to total enthusiasm. It's insane to me that the PARODY is the one that understands trekkies the best. And while it IS a parody, the actual stories they tell are LEGIT Star Trek stories.
I still think they should put Kurtzman out to pasture and bring in Mike McMahan to be the EP for all of Trek. He seems to be the only guy who "gets" it.
If you're a solid fan of TNG - Picard Season 3 is the 'real' ending to TNG, Ignore season 1 and 2, go into Season 3 with a fresh view. It's a completely redone, intelligent and well done proper send off to the show. This is what everyone who enjoyed Star Trek during it's prime wanted. - As someone who never watched Discovery (And heard terrible things.) And Picard 1/2 were a major let down, but enjoyed TNG/DS9/Voyager, it's worth it.
Also, if you want a fresh, enjoyable silly version of Star Trek, Lower Decks is fantastic, a little rough in parts of Season 1, but I recommend it. References, silly comments, bringing back others for voice acting, it's finished it's fourth season, and has really brought life back into the show. - SNW needs a few episodes to settle into, and I recommend lower decks be watched before moving onto SNW season 2, but there's some witty, and some silly, but it holds up well as 'Star Trek'.
Picard s3 was certainly better than 1-2, but it was still shit. It just wasn't "this should actually be illegal" bad. Don't fret, though, nothing Patrick Stewart ever does will unmake TNG, so I will always love the man.
I wanted to like Discovery.. Like was *so* excited to see how they'd handle adding to the TOS era. Sadly.. it did not go well and I was seriously disappointed with the way the fell into bad trope after bad trope. I loved the crew's representation and the casting, everyone was perfect for the characters they played. But the plotlines were just not written or handled well. Especially disliked the unnecessary change to the Klingons too.
Klingon appearance big minus indeed but offset by them speaking Klingon with subtitles. Pulling it from Netflix and removing access for Europe entirely for a whole year is what killed it for me. Duck you Paramount+
Ewe you people like this stuff? There is such a fine line with comedy between being funny and making fun of. To the point where the exact same thing is hard to watch for one person and funny to the next.
Lower Decks is fun. You can tell the creator loves Star Trek and knows what to poke fun of and what to take seriously. It's just a nice silly Trek with a lot of heart
Honestly you can watch it as a standalone of SNW, but I would watch Lower Decks to really appreciate it. (I don't care much for SNW, but do love LD and I was able to follow just fine without SNW background)
Gotcha. Yeah, I love lower decks, but personally couldn't stick with SNW. Couldn't even tell you why really. I enjoy the actors, they do a good job, but I think I just found it overall...dull or slow.

I was surprised how much i enjoyed the whole series. And I luv the musical episode. The Klingon Boy Band? I laughed so hard.

That was a good episode with a realistic plot and it got rid of the soon to be annoying kid. Don't get me started on the singing episode.

Still didn't need to invent BS about the Gorn being a shitty Xenomorph variant that sounds like it came out of a fanfic.
idiotsonfire
They could have just created a new race, but nah, gotta appeal to that nostalgia about Gorn in TOS.
HashMaster9k
Well, Gorn were never really explored in anything but one episode of TOS and the Mirror Episode of Enterprise, so I see the appeal in the TOS era. But the Gorn Hegemony HAS been explored in the books, and given them a far richer history and social structure than what is being done to it.
