This type of wire woven jewelry is found throughout archeological sites in Scandinavia and surrounding areas though I've never seen. That exact method for starting the weave, I have done this myself in the past. There's actually several different weave patterns too.

This is frequently called "viking wire weaving", and is quite easy to do this level.
The way I was taught, you make a series of loops of gardening wire and seat *that* on top of the wood, twisting up the top and leaving the bottom with its loops 'gloveing' the post.
