Get laid off and rarely need to drive anywhere. Happened to me and lucky me! After 5 months of applications! No offers. Oh, and unemployment in Fl only lasts for 3 months.
Extra weight is a low priority; you get to diminishing returns pretty fast, so unless you can get rid of hundreds of pounds...
Proper maintenance and smooth driving behaviors are much bigger returns. Minimizing AC use (heat is almost free in a gasoline car), keeping to moderate speeds, knowing when AC is a better deal than open windows, etc. can save you a lot of money.
Whoa whoa whoa. We didn't go to war because Israel told us to. We went to war because Israel said they were going to war and ther other guy would attack the US in retaliation.
Peak Oil was 54 years ago. We had plenty of time then to switch to high speed rail networks and walkable cities. But nooooo, gotta let car go vroomvroom.
It's not just the Israelis; it's also the American Christian nationalists who actually believe the triumph of Israel is a necessary precedent for the Second Coming of Christ, and that it will lead to the Rapture. I pray to God most days to please take them all in the fucking Rapture and let the rest of us get on with life, without those idiot zealots who passionately believe they know better than anyone else what everybody needs.
If a Rapture occurs, hopefully they have a clear view, otherwise they would deny it. I'd love for MAGAs to witness a handful of other people drifting into the sky. I'd love to see their faces.
Truly sickens me a couple dollars at the pump is the only thing people care about. You’re disgusting to me. The girl school double-tap? That was the outrage moment. Not, “It’s $80 instead of $50.” Boohoo. This is why I got so damn angry all the time when I got back from Afghanistan. Fuck all of you clueless people who are so self-absorbed and have literally NO idea about suffering or even being slightly uncomfortable. Seriously. Maybe you deserve the pain coming. Clueless.
It really does start with education. If this country has any hope to get on a good track in the future, it's a complete overhaul of our education system and curriculum. Fat chance, I know.
IKR? It's like every night, I tell myself, "Don't do it... Don't give into war... She doesn't love you" and there I am, in the morning, trying to chew my arm off again.
Personally I've found this to be very effective, yes, but not everyone can have a job where they can do that. I'm deeply, deeply grateful that I only have to go into the office about once a month.
I did it for over 5 years and then they decided we needed to do a hybrid of 2 weeks in and 2 weeks work from home and those 2 weeks in office really just ruin my day 😭
Most cars have removeable seats. If you only ever ride solo, consider removing the rear passenger seats, safely drape them in plastic and keep them out of rain in garage. They are like 200 kilos each. It may reduce the bulk some and let you start/stop with greater ease, which is half of driving on crowded urban roads.
While true, removing a couple hundred pounds of unnecessary weight(I've seen people just keep a couple bags of dog food in the trunk and other crap) is easy. Trying to improve the aerodynamics of a modern car without a wind tunnel is incredibly difficult.
Honestly, probably AND for the near term. Renewables keep getting better but adding modern nuclear (low risk, low waste) and geothermal to the mix will help a lot.
Fingers crossed we crack commercially viable fusion within 20 years (which is possible but not certain).
And just think of all the poor centrifuges that will lose out work if we don't have to use them by using already enriched recycled materials!! Won't anyone think of the centrifuges!!!111
Have been looking for a plugin hybrid. My work had charging bays, and it's a commute that would work to just charge it there. Wish I would've gotten one sooner
Same! And my old car crapped out just a month ago. New Ioniq 5 Limited owner here. It's so nice not topping off oil (engine issues for like a year+ ugh) or sky high gas prices (and it's only going to get worse before its better) or tailpipe emissions.
If a power company is saying data centers are a reason for a price hike, 99% of the time that’s a lie.
DC’s are mostly built where there’s excess local capacity, and they’re a profit center for the power company. And the power usage is industrial scale but not beyond that, so well within normal grid planning constraints.
Commercial power costs more per kWh the more you use, for one. So using twice the power costs more than twice as much. There’s only rarely a case where the profit from that doesn’t more than offset infrastructure and capacity investment
Put solar on your roof if you can. I know not everyone can, and winter and clouds exist, but when that sunny weather gets together with charging your ev off your home solar, it's really lovely.
What? Do you think the war in Iran is going to cover up my solar panels? Stop the US-produced natural gas, nuclear fuel, and coal that powers 80% of the grid?
no but will probably impact the trucks and cargo ships that haul battery materials from all around the globe. Not overly informed on it but from my passing knowledge, those batteries have to be replaced pretty often and for quite a bit of cash.
Batteries needing to be replaced in EVs is an outdated thing. That hasn’t been an issue in a very long time. And even when it was a genuine issue, the total cost of ownership was still lower than most combustion cars.
fair I was followhing this youtuber, thunderfoot, on it for awhile but found out he was on the wrong side of gamergate a year and a half or so ago so stopped. from what I remember there was up to a 20% collapse in capacity after 1 year in high or low temp zones and with commercial fast charging tech.
Unfortunately that doesn't really help much in the US, since about 80% of all US electricity is made by burning fossil fuels. (That was in 2023) In the trump era, that is not going to change for the better. Only about 10% of US electricity comes from nuclear power plants, so take a wild guess on how much renewable energy is being produced...
Uh ? Coal isn't a fossil fuel in the US ? The coal reserves are LOWER than the oil reserves. It's also the DIRTIEST fuel to use. If you are bothered by smog NOW, then wait till the coal smog hits. The trump "clean coal" lie is just that, a blatant lie.

Reducing speed is actually a really good one. On the highway, 65mph burns about 40% less gas than 80mph.

FYI reducing weight is not very effective in conserving gas. Making your car more aerodynamic would be a significant increase.

Fusion is such a far-off idea that it's not worth discussing in the context of solving energy needs in our lifetime.
VitaminJay
Thorium Pebble reactors are super cheap (comparatively) and are Fail-Safe. You gotta keep the reaction tended to or it settles down.
Also it means all the waste accumulated becomes a fuel source once more.

Nuclear? Near term? We can fabricate many terawatts of solar capacity before the first nuclear plant even opens its doors.
