Nice Deck Pics!

Hey, nice deck.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wanna come fix the deck my contractors just fucked up?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ESL, is this what you refer to as "big deck energy"?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We need @AlphaStructural to approve this overkill

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Inspector here. Are you driving a car on this? Save some lumber for the rest of us!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Lmao, sorry Carle I can’t help myself. First time working this township and I want to start on a good foot with the township!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's bloody overkill, that's what it is!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nahh

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, ok.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Watch out for "attractive nuisance" (check local laws). That yellow tape probably wouldn't hold up in court. Get treads and rails up ASAP.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s smart. Homeowners are very aware to be nowhere near it, but I didn’t think of people doing things on purpose. Thanks!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only way to build a deck so that the railings meet normal building code is to put them like you did. Nice work.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's ridiculously over engineered and complicated. Building steps like that costs more than needed, wastes materials, and time.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I disagree completely. An extra half day and $175 in materials is a no brainer, if you want a wobbly, squeaky, messy deck, then go for it!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Disagree all you want, I used to build decks too, you dont need that much blocking, and the post design for the railing is overly complex.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When the lumber used for the deck is worth more than the house.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Don't forget to add the floor.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You shouldn't be flaunting your wealth so much

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

You know the rules! Completed project first picture then the "steps" @op

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Strong enough for even your mom to walk up and fown

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Solid post(s)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How to turn 3 days of work into 4 weeks. Milk it into overkill oblivion.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The post framing+ stringer blocking took me 4 hours myself. I sleep at night very well knowing my work will not receive call backs

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not sure if 5 stringers is enough,,,, o_0

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s actually the minimum requirement for the deck boards I used ??

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Must be some fat ass lard buckets gonna climb up that deck! Damn.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sexy as hell my friend, killin it

4 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 2

Thank you much!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

id walk down those so hard

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

or up - whatever’s your pleasure

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Both please!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It seems almost overbuilt. 5 joists and 2 blocks on every step.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Decking calls for 9-10” centers minimum, and picture frame treads new the blocking for miters to rest on and attach to.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That bottom step wood is not making contact with the concrete right?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

G tape applied on the bottom of stringers

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well then now I’m suffering from Deck envy...like I need something else to feel inferior about...Thanks OP! ?

4 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

Trim the bushes around your deck to make it look bigger.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You are a real size queen i guess. There's not ONE bush around that deck now and you want it trimmed to look bigger. Sheesh?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You could always ask to sit on OP's big hard deck.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That thing will never fall down or crack with all those beams.

4 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

Posts. Not beams

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its nice pressure treated wood, will last ~15 years like that, but paint or varnish it all around (underside too) and paint the bottom 2

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

inches of the posts with creosote (warning carcinogenic, also cover with paint) and it will last ~50+ years.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I sure hope not!

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Eventually water always wins, but this deck will outlive its builder. After that, it's someone else's problem.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Structural technician here: those steps are super overkill. driving a 4 wheeler up them steps?

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Looks good though

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I subscribe to the "what if I own a tank and want to park it in the living room?" methodology. This overdoneness resonates with me.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The trouble is when all those little pieces start coroding around screwholes. Things start falling off over time!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They are exterior coated, they won’t corrode for a very long time

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How can you afford 3 mortgages?

4 years ago | Likes 421 Dislikes 5

Originally the deck was going to be much large and bought all the lumber before the price increase. Sold some to pay off the house.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

he's a lumber salesman

4 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Dude I don’t even know. Just got a quote for a fence: 170 ft for $6500. Too rich for my blood.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One step at a time

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sacrifice dude. Op stop eating avocado toast

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Carefully

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Waiting for the avocados to grow.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Must be my great credit score ?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just had a quote for a deck replacement... $63,800.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Holy shit how big is the deck? I quoted a 14x35 composite + Trex transcend deck for $26500. They might wait until lumber prices dip

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's literally 2/3 what I paid for my house.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How long ago though?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the range for many rural ohio homes like in my area.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't get it.

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 4

Wood is expensive

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The cost of lumber in the U.S. has sky-rocketed post-COVID. It's an exaggeration, but not by much.

4 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

It's at around a 300% price increase ATM.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I paid $15 for a 4x4x48 post for my new mailbox last weekend.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wasnt it like 15 bucks for an 8 foot treated before these times?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

$7-8 for treated 4x4x8 at my local lumber yard February 2020. I made a sand box for my kid because I saw the lockdowns coming.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As some one who knows nothing about the lumber market... that doesn't seem horrible. What would you have paid for that 2 years ago?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A 4x8 ft sheet of OSB plywood would have cost around 12$ a year or so ago now it is about 51$.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Less than half that.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And with the usual joke time-lag, we'll be getting these until...eh...bout 2031, I'd say.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Yes

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Bold of you to assume the prices will be coming back down. The industry has got people used to lumber being expensive now - why ruin a 1/

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/ good thing by competing with each other?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A sheet of plywood is $80 right now

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How much did it cost before?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$20-25

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oooohhh woooowww!!!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

DAMNNNNNN

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I work in a plywood plant and to me that sounds lowballed. But we make trailer floors and specialized plywood mostly though.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Probably varies by region too. I live in a timber state. Never thought about custom plywood being a thing. That's pretty cool.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I work at a Menards yard, a sheet of 1/2" is about $50, a sheet of 3/4 t&g is almost $70

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correction: that's OSB prices, plywood is way worse

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m no carpenters.. I dabble.. but this seems overkill?

4 years ago | Likes 183 Dislikes 3

Obviously you don't live in the Midwest...people are...bigger...here.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Maybe op will have 40 people on his deck

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As someone who's delivered appliances on far worse built decks, I appreciate how sturdy this looks. If it's over 40 inches wide I love it.

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Ahhhh. Another connoisseur of the curvy woman!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Am a Carpenter , not overkill, can confirm

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the support ??

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seriously

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Norwegian here. This is at least 3 times the building code here.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you live in the US, it's not uncommon to have a 400lb friend or two. I do.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

The fit and finish looks great. I would have liked to have seen the 4x4s as actual posts, all the way down to the ground.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That'd be cool but I think they would need to restructure it a bit for the handrail to work better.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had figured it would be totally firm but there is a tiny bit of bounce if I jump on it, I’m going to add center 4x4s so it’s totally solid

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you think posts attached to slab with post/Crete hardware is safe to do?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is Correct for composite decking. Most manufacturers recommend stringers be 9-10 inch on center. Im a pro builder. I Do this everyday.

4 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

I guess that's a no for composite decking from me then.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Trust me, you don't want it. The manufacturer will promise you the world but it's still plastic and its still gonna turn to junk in 5 years

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I too am a pro and enjoy hitting the wood with my hammers and adjoining the recycled wood to other wet green wood, jk sturdy AF looks nice.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Overkill to some I’m sure! 5 stringers needed for Azek decking, and I hate wobbly posts so I secured the hell out of them. Worth it to me ??

4 years ago | Likes 214 Dislikes 1

Overkill is always better than underkill.... which is what happens to people who cheap out on their stairs.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks great

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Looks like a sweet ramp, and I can't wait to see you take the quad off that for an awesome jump!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The quality shows. And I’m the same way. I just couldn’t imagine it needed that much support

4 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

Totally worth it to support the outer most edge of the steps as well as inhibiting any “bounce”. I’m with you OP ?

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That, in its current state, looks wide enough and strong enough to drive an ATV up it

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol I’m sure it could take it!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Amature here. Posts and stringer count look good to me. Why the horizontal 2x8s between the two outer stringers? Won't treads secure this?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It’s for the miters of the picture framed treads to land on and secure to. If you don’t have solid underneath they get wonky

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Picture framed treads... very nice! A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Extra blocking never hurts

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's no kill like overkill!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Id do the same lol. My dad added a second story to our garage and used a metal I beam to support the floor. Inspector said it was overkill 1

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But dad didn't want the floor to bounce. Now i always go over the top when doing the supporting parts of my projects

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love to hear this. I’d rather have the inspector say it’s too good than not good enough! Floor bounce does not scream “quality!” Haha

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So you're a 'I wear two condoms' kind of guy...

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Yep!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those are rookie numbers.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Those are rookie rubbers

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jesus, what the hell you doing? You battling covidaidsbola with your units or what.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anything worth doing is worth over-doing. I concur. Looks awesome.

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Not with current lumber prices

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Im not going to sacrifice quality because lumber is more expensive. My customers pay the inflated price and I deliver a lasting product!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(Belgian here) So it is worldwide?!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seems to be global (in in the US and it's definitely here)
