This is Michelangelo’s David one of the most famous sculptures in the world. It is a prime example of a renaissance sculpture. Notice how the sculpture isn’t depicting much movement. Just the classic contrapposto pose of having the weight on one leg creating asymmetry but still a relatively balanced and vertical sculpture.

This is Bernini’s David from the Baroque art period. Notice how this is much more of a action shot almost like some one took a photo of David mid sling. Also as notice how the position of the limbs and body create diagonals. The twist of the body creates a bit of a spiral.

This is The school of Athens by Raphael and is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the Renaissance. Note the balance of the composition. If you drew a line down the middle there would be roughly the same amount of people on both sides. That line would also bisect the two central figures. Also you can see a lot of depth in the negative space or background. Also extra credit if you can find Michelangelo’s cameo and Raphael’s self portrait

This is The Lion Hunt by Peter Paul Rubens. First notice how much the subject matter fills the composition as opposed to the School of Athens. There is almost no background. Look at the layout as well it is unbalance, with the right side of the painting being much darker than the left. And finally notice the angles of the spears and bodies creating diagonals through out the painting.

From the Br-oke period.

There is a replica of the Statue of David in a park near my apartment. I see his green butt EVERY day. His dink faces away from the street.

Note: It's green because it's made of bronze (from a cast of the original statue--one of only a handful in the world) and it has oxidized.

"notice the angles of the spears and bodies creating diagonals". Ok. Done. Now, honest question:

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What am I supposed to do with that information? I really don't get it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The diagonals are opposed to the straight vertical poses of Renaissance art, having angles rather than standard standing poses.

can show a statue with a penis but if a female nipple of any sorts shows, everyone flips their shit

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

There are many paintings and sculptures in particular that show female nipples.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fun fact. Mike's "David" has such a large head and big arms because he was originally supposed to be up high in a niche. Perspective!

Nice, just like Trajan's column

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was a shitty piece of marble and had to carved with "no movement" and off kilter look due to flaws/center of gravity issues.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep! That ankle support up into the calf. Someone tried to take a hammer to it many years ago, got the toe I believe.David is easily faulted

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Classical is calm, baroque is violent and chaotic. Got it.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

What about all those people saying this photo looks like a renaissance painting? Do they really mean baroque?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Often, yes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rubens was very much in keeping with the northern Baroque style.
