I am so happy

Feb 12, 2017 4:57 AM

So it's my mom's 50th birthday this year. She wanted to throw a party for her colleagues at work in a big party tent in our garden. My dad was really negative about it and said "work people" shouldn't mean anything in her private life. My mom doesn't really have any friends and only interacts with family and people from work. She is the strongest woman I've ever known, and she's ALWAYS been there for everyone in our family, through thick and thin. (We've been through mental illnesses like schizophrenia, anorexia and OCD in our family, and she's always been supportive).
This, however, made her walk off and leave the room, and as she passed me, I could tell her eyes were red and she was tearing up. She just didn't want us to see.

My dad looked at me and asked what her problem was. I couldn't help but cry and said I was gutted for her because of what he had said, and I told him that after all she had done for us through the years, she deserved all the support in the world. After all, it's her 50th birthday, and it should be about what she wants.

He went off in a hurry, following her into the next room. I was so worried he would scold her while I wasn't there, but decided to give them some privacy.

When I followed them into the other room 5 minutes later, they were planning her 50th birthday party in our garden together, with food and music and all, and she had the biggest smile across her face. I have the best mom anyone could ask for, and she deserves the best birthday ever.

TL;DR:
It's my mom's 50th b-day party this year and my dad was being really unsupportive about it which made her cry. After I talked to him about it he apologized and made her really happy again.

I have the best mom in the world.

I never understood having no forensic outside of work. I read don't talk to anyone at work about my private life. Work friends stay at work.

Everyone can be thick sometimes. Sometimes people need an outside perspective. Or a swift kick in the rear

As a guy, sometimes it's really as simple as not thinking about what we're going to say before we say it. I spend a lot of time quiet...

Exactly. Being married I try to keep in mind, you can never un say something.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You say you have the best mom in the world, all I see is you are the best child in the world ;)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well done. VERY well done. I'm glad your dad saw the problem and went to solve it thanks to you. :)

It's hard for me to understand why some people can't see another person's side unless someone flat out tells them.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Empathy and emotional intelligence are more innate in some people than in others, that's all.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can we send her birthday cards!

Fuck off kid

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 13

9 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 2

Ya no joke. My dad would have never done that.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah. Everyone makes an ass out of themselves time to time, it's those who realize and fix it that are worth something.

9 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

Sounds like your dad does does care - he may just not understand. Well done OP for helping them both.

www.redhatsociety.com - if she's open to it. my mom and all her sisters joined for their 50th birthday parties. Making friends gets hard.

That looks cool, but as I live in Denmark I don't think it would be applicable. Anyway I don't think she would do it. Thanks a lot though.:)

Do they have a version for the late 20s-early 30s crowd? How do people even make friends in the wild?!

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

You get a social hobby.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. Anyone under 50 wears pink instead. And, as someone in that age group, I have NOoooo idea.

OP is like a pair of spectacles for a person blind to the emotions of others. Good job @OP

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also, OP's dad seems to be a great husband. He hurt her unknowingly, but after realisation immediately took action to make her smile again!

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

The way your comment reads it's as if he come to the reslisation himself. Good on you Op for sorting your dad out.

9 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 5

He knew he fucked up

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We can all use a reality check from time to time. You can help people see things, but you can't make them see

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Dads need help, especially with strong moms that stay emotions for peace. I've had to explain to my da why things were mean or inappropriate

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It's not just dads. Sometimes guys can be oblivious. Source: I'm a guy. Also a dad btw. We just need some help at times. That's all. Gg OP!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I said dad because of relevance to post. Since dad's are males 99.9% of the time I figured it was implied but I guess I'm sorry

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dad's not so bad, either.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

No. He can be an idiot sometimes but he comes around and can be very loving and caring. I love him and respect him very much.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Lots of good people can be idiots sometimes due to not thinking. What matters is he realizes it and fixes his mistakes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't expect everyone to understand. It may seem odd. But my mom has saved my sister's life and dealt with things no one should have to.

9 years ago | Likes 518 Dislikes 14

Dammit, onions everywhere in this post, @OP. My mom just went through a stroke. Enjoy your mom's company, she sounds awesome!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good mothers are treasures, I hope your mom has a wonderfull 50th birthday :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I understand more than you know. You've done a great thing :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i understand, my mom is just the same, dealt with my suicide attempts et cetera. Amazing mommies ftw

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good moms are hard to come by. I'm glad you understand and appreciate yours, and can get your dad to remember that too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pls give your dad a bit of credit-people can be stupid/oblivious. Pride prevents admitting their wrongs. He caused it but he fixed it, too.

Don't forget your dad.It takes a good man to realize one's errors. He swallowed his pride, listened to his kid and amended the mistake he made

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey @OP, can I send her a birthday card? If you pm me your address, I'll send one and promise not to be creepy.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ignore any negativity. Your mother is a sweet, lovely, and precious woman. I hope she has a wonderful and joy-filled birthday!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She does! I Love hearing about great moms, mine was awful, many are. Great moms are special and deserve all the recognition

As one of my favourite quotes says, "Mother is the name for God on the lips and hearts of all children." Happy birthday to your Mother! :)

9 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

That quote broke me when I realized it was true, and all I ever wanted as a child was for my mother to love me.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you, I had forgotten this quote. It made me tear up.
