It also didn’t help much that I literally lived next door to my school

Just vote republican and you'll see it everywhere

Guh, that slow crawl as they name all the schools, one of the worst things about going to Zedidiah High.

Schools close

Growing up in central Sweden, we usually didn't have snow days. Except once after a big snowstorm and people couldn't get out of their home.

We got snow days as a kid growing up but mostly bc our area rarely got snow so we weren't prepped to deal with it. In college I went>

Further south and snow days were non-existent bit Hurricane Days were fantastic.

Former Nebraska DJ here: I hated the CONSTANT calls from kids when it started snowing at night: "Is (X) School closed tomorrow?" (1/2)

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

We updated on the air 2x/hr and online, but the calls kept coming in! Kids, if you don't hear your school on our list, assume it's open!

Or your dad wants to play Zaggles, the fun phonics ame

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When you hear the NEXT letter off the alphabet being called and you have to wait until it comes around again.

As a former homeschooler: can’t relate ?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Believe me, teachers were praying just as hard as the kids.

I had a full week off once due to snow. Good time as a parapro. I miss that.

My dad was a teacher and I am now... this is 100% true.

"Just let me finally get this [*cough*] paperwork and drink done in peace!"

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

My schools it was the teachers calling in that they aren't coming caused the school closures.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hated the slow scrolling list thst took like 15 min, just to find out my school was or wasn't closed. I got up like 10 min before bus came.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In south MS it was usually hurricane days

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They canceled school in Michigan for 1 inch of snow on multiple occasions last year. Back in the day you needed at least a foot

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Went to a private school in NJ for 2yrs that didn’t believe in school closing or the state of emergency.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of the reasons I loved being bused in the winter! They never ran in the snow

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My HS's last snowman before 2011 was like 1980 or so. They literally hadda close it down MID DAY, all the students had to sleep there

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Overnight. From what the teachers said, it sucked. Im amazed they had cots for the students. (2 campuses, only 1 closed [Jr and Sr])

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah yes... the blizzard of 97. When my school shut down for like two days so all the grown ups could unbury the cars and driveways.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had the entire week off. We got 2+ feet. I was like 14 at the time. Still one of the best weeks of my life.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tbh... I might have as well. But it was so long ago. And all I remember was sledding for hours. Coming in when it was dark lol.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Poor kids today will just have class by Zoom. They'll never know this joy.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Our district just emails some assignments, they still have plenty of time to play in the snow

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looking back at it now, I suppose having a mom that didn't give a shit about me had its benefits. That was now a "sick day"

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Had snow days as a kid in NY. Moved to TX as a teen. Then we only closed if the place was flooding. Much less frequent. ?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Use to get up at like 5:00 am to listen on the radio for school closings, then go back and sleep in my warm bed till noon.

I grew up in a town that had historically experienced below-zero temperatures and snow in month of the year, and never once saw a snow 1/n

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

day. The rationale was that - even if classes ended up canceled or greatly modified - schools needed to stay open to provide a warm and 2/n

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

safe place for kids. Though fortunately it never affected me, I know a few kids who stayed at school for extended periods due to power 3/n

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

outages and other issues related to snow storms that affected their homes. 4/4

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Next door here too, but I could see if the busses left the lot or not. So I knew before anyone if it was closed or not.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Has anyone studied if well-funded schools in high tax districts are closed more often then poorly funded schools?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*due to snow

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Since schools have developed/purchased the tech do do remote learning due to covid, no more SNOW DAYS.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We still have them, they just send out assignments , mostly just reading

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Our school was old, it had a newer more modern and bigger part, but it was all heated by the boiler in the old building. Every time it got >

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

really cold we got the day off. It was amazing. Ireland is quite temperate so it never got very cold that often, but you take what you get.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in my 14 years of school, there were 0 snow days, just 2 closed days when the temp/wcf was so cold the buses had trouble starting.

3 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

Never had a snow day. Never had a teacher's strike. Seems like they happen all the time now.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At my school in northern MN most of the bus drivers were mechanics and half of them drove the snow plows, I still don't remember a snow day

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...in a place where our average seasonal snowfall was about 120"

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Oh you’re from Upstate New York? Poor poor child you have my sympathy

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yep, just outside Syracuse

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Places that snow usually have the infrastructure to deal with it. It snows like 6" once in a blue moon here(desert) so no plows or anything.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I was born and lived the 1st 13 years of my life in Chicago winters were brutal and we would get a lot of snow

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Hahahaha that's very much true!!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've watched my breath freeze and still had to go to school, they didn't close for anything short of the apocalypse

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was it up hill both ways?

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I’ve had both snow days and hurricane days at different schools when I was a kid.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had them at the same school! Hurricane Gloria in Connecticut

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did any of you do stupid superstitions like flush ice cubes or sleep w/ your pajamas inside out thinking it would make it snow.?

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I used to sacrifice popsicles to the Snow Queen.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hahahahaha… SoCal kid. Never ever heard this before. Great! ?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Saw that in a comic strip on Instagram recently. Precious Rascals

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep... My dumbass would put some ice cubes outside thinking it would lower the temp enough to snow.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dad would blow the “snow horn”

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The only superstition I had was to not talk about it too much because it might make it not happen.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Like ordering.lunch when it's dead at a restaurant and it gets slammed. No food for you

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well that and my dad yelling at me and saying I wanted him die in a crash. Another reason I didn't get too hyped out loud.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Growing up in SOCAL we only ever got school closings over air quality. Ergo no playing outside

3 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 0

Bakersfield had “smog days” San Diego had holy fuck the whole county might burn down days

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I missed a couple weeks of college in 1994 because my school was near the epicenter of the Northridge earthquake.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hey don't forget active shooters.

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Can confirm.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In socal and got off a day for tiger on the loose, but that's probably less common.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Air quality? Bro

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You try existing outside when the smoke turns the sun red.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Not to sound like a dirty socialist commie but maybe big factories should have a few rules against polution?

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nah, it’s smoke from wildfires. Source: Californian.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

@OP It shouldn't matter if you lived next to the school, since the open-or-close decision would be based whether school busses could run.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The "Should we close the schools today?" question is based on whether the kids far away from it can get there, not the kids next door to it.
