I found one pair of AA batteries of this type, it said long life and it had timestamp of 1978, and they were still 1,53v.
they were inside of needle type multimeter. No need to replace yet..

I'd still argue "sore wo matsu" is more akin to "Is/am/are waiting for it", vs "Wait for it", whichever tense that would be.
It does sound weird, yeah. It's a statement of fact, not a request.
