A discreet cabinet in the basement...

My wife inherited this old Victorian mansion from her grandfather (who isn't dead yet but isn't living there anymore) and moved in in the summer of 2002, about six months before we started dating. It was her great-grandfather's house before her grandfather owned it, so she's the fourth generation to live there (her mom of course grew up there).
Anyway, the creepy old basement is like a maze, and at one time her great-grandfather was the county coroner, and he used the basement (which was finished at one time) as a doctor's office and a morgue. In one of the rooms of the basement is a row of cabinets, tucked back behind some hardware.
When we married in 2007 I discovered this safe and it's been a point of interest for me ever since.

Open it up and what do you find...

Inside the cabinet is a safe. A Mosler safe. The same Mosler Safe Company that made the safes that were installed in the Mitsui Bank of Hiroshima that were made famous by surviving the atomic blast.
I asked about it and her grandfather couldn't remember the combination. I took a shot at removing the hinges, but those are merely caps. The only way the door will unhinge is if it's open. And this thing weighs probably a good thousand pounds, so it's not going anywhere.
After years of grinning and bearing my curiosity, my wife's grandfather happened to stumble across the combination yesterday while he was going through some old paperwork. He sent it my way.

Finally open!

Good lord, that's a thick door. So let's see what we've got - a drawer, a lock box with another drawer in it, some keys (only two of which appear to have any purpose in here) and some paperwork to the right. Let's take a look and see what treasures we can find.

We'll start with the drawer.

Looks like a matchbox or something. Nothing inside or under the pieces, though.

ZONK

What the hell, Wayne Brady?

Well, let's take a look in the box.

What's in the box?

Nothing!

Absolutely nothing!

Stupid!

Yoooou're soooo stoooooopuuuud!

If you haven't seen UHF and therefore don't get the reference, I'm sorry about your wasted childhood. ;)

Anything else?

Okay, the drawer and lock box were a flop, what about the paperwork?

Interesting.

The big envelope had some interesting stuff in it, and I originally mistook it as paperwork related to my wife's uncle Jack (who's real name was John). Many of them were related to medical exams (to become a doctor). Her great uncle Jack was in the Navy during WWII, and after the war was a pharmacist, so this didn't surprise me.
Then I saw the dates - 1910, 1914, etc. This wasn't Uncle Jack's paperwork, the John being referenced was her great-grandfather. These papers were old, but didn't look to be over a century old. I was shocked. And none of us knew that he had ever gone by the nickname of 'Jack' as well. We learned a lot of new things from this paperwork.

More interesting stuff.

Brought to you by MS Paint - here are some old bank deposit slips from a local municipal bank. I'm not even sure the bank is there anymore, and it's likely all this money is long gone, but suffice it to say we'll be looking into it. One page dated 1954 listed an account balance of $14,000.

Even MORE interesting stuff.

There were also lots of information associated with stocks and bonds, but I'm having a hard time making sense of it. I'm giving all this to my mother-in-law and she's going to have an accountant (and maybe a lawyer) take a look at some of this stuff.

Sorry guys, no gold bars or jewelry or cash, or anything of immediate value, but a lot of neat stuff related to my wife's family that'll give them a glimpse a century into the past.
I'm not gonna lie - there was a little part of me hoping I'd find a wad of cash or something, but oh well, it's no biggie. I may not have gotten rich off my find but I sure did get an awesome safe I can now use for my own stuff. And I can rest easy knowing my shit will survive a nuclear blast, even if I don't. :)

I was immediately pissed when I saw this thinking he wouldn't get it open. Good job delivering, Op.

With a 5% rate annually, it's more like 261 508.60$

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure the accounts are long gone, but that'd be cool as balls.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I want to see some pictures of this house. I bet it's stunning. Who's with me?

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

I would love to but I'm a little reluctant... this house makes me paranoid as balls I'm gonna get robbed. I might make an album though.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I feel you. I just love architecture and old shit, so your house is total awesome for me.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'll go through and see what I can do to put an album together of my part of the house without being TOO open. Work out something for ya. :)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I would also like to see the house. That was the first thing I thought, was how cool it probably looks!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just because its not gold and silver, doesn't mean its not treasure.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not even mad - there's lots of cool information about my wife's great-grandfather in there we didn't know. Plus, the safe and house.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That safe i bet is worth a fair amount itself though.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm no expert but that safe is probably worth a decent chunk of change to a collector. Glad you got the combo!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

OP knows the rules. Good Job here is a gold star and a upvote.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even if the post itself weren't deserving (which it is), I'd upvote this purely because you posted it AFTER you opened the safe.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 for not missing opportunity for UHF reference.

What about grandpa's pornstache?

I would happily read an entire website that was JUST galleries of safes being opened. Safes? Saves?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If i was in this scenario as soon as i open the safe i would make the noise from old school zelda when you open a chest "daa nana naaaaa"

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm seriously surprised you didn't find a watery, leather-bound, nudie drawing of Kate Winslet.

Up-vote for UHF!

Or half a dozen Rusty Knives, a few Wooden Shields, a Broken Sword, two Spider Legs and a Boar Tusk. You need that space for quest items.

Fuck the safe, tell us about the floor wax!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am upvoting for the sole reason that he waited until it was opened to post this.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, if your old Victorian mansion that used to have a morgue in the basement haunted? Stories please.

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Ah, fuck it. Enough people are asking - I'll put together an album tonight. :)

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I'll get it together tonight and you can expect it tomorrow morning, probably between 8 and 9 AM CST.

I was almost mad but, you opened the safe <3

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also, that safe just plain looks cool.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The safe has to be worth some money too. That is a seriously thick box. Look at those step backs on the door.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's funny - I've had that thought too. The safe itself may be more valuable than anything I could put in it.

10 years ago | Likes 314 Dislikes 0

Heck, it's gorgeous *and* useful. Even if it doesn't lock I'd keep it just because it's amazing! (we have an old radio like that.)

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'll keep it (interestingly enough I have an old radio like that too!)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is that a wood exterior on the thing? Clean/polish it up and post some pictures of it, if you can! It _is_ gorgeous.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Get your ass over to r/whatisthisworth

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

From what I could find online older Mosler safes go for more than $1,000 easy depending on the model.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I think it would all depend on what kind of security features it has. A lot of modern safes have glass relockers and stuff like that.

10 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 2

It's value may be more in it being an antique than how functional it is. I'd get it appraised.

10 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 0

I'll give you $3.50

10 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 2

I'll give $3.51

yadda yadda, lock ness yadda yadda

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

Do you know how old it is? I work at an auction house, i can tell you that it probably won't go for more than a couple hundred

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I couldn't even guess. Truthfully I probably rather use it than move it - I tried to move it once to get a better look at it. Way too heavy.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yea, but that was when it was full... now it's empty ;)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

heh.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People always forget that! They think "oh well, nothing valuable in the safe, its worthless". Safes themselves are super valuable.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The thickness of it, that subtle off-black color of it- it even has a watermark!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ahhhh red snapper. Very tasty

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But was it discreet or discrete?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Given the fact it looks like any other cabinet down there, I'd say discreet.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
