The soldered shield of the GPS antenna

Shield removed

The original 1575MHz SAW filter identified and marked

Removing the SAW filter. This is not rocket science and we don't need it intact anyway.
So a wide tip, leaded solder and a bit of time worked for me.

SAW filter removed

Soldered in a bit of wire. Thin leaded solder helps here.

Jumper lead trimmed to length.

Shield soldered back on and antenna put pack in it's case. Along with some markings.

Artistic.

Next step is adding a 3.3V or 5V Bias-T to an RTL-SDR stick for feeding the GPS patch antenna some power.

Neat.

Awesome! What can you receive with Inmarsat and Iridium? I assume you are connecting this to a linux box for some SDR fun?

But what does it do? If you explain for those who don't understand science?

It's an antenna, it receives signals, in this case from space. The SAW filter limits it to GPS, I want Inmarsat and Iridium. So I remove it.
