The fact they are trying to use the government to control everybody is a disconnect the people at the head of their movement tries very hard to enforce. But is that *really* how they consider themselves? Perhaps I am giving them too much credit, but I very much doubt the sincerity of such claims. I think they know damn well the role they're playing, and that it is certainly not "the resistance". They just don't care, as long as there are people willing to buy into this narrative. Ultimately, this thinly veiled farce is still profitable, and that's all that matters.

Sadly no, they are sincere. They see themselves as the heroes and when they see the heroes in media they just assume that they are the same as them. They don't have the self awareness or critical thinking skills to understand that their beliefs are what those fictional heroes were fighting against. Note, AFAIK, only the USMC used meat tags and they were an inspectiable item, but this is probably just an urban legend, the Army did nothing of the sort (esp once everyone got DNA sampled).
