Seriously, antibiotics do nothing vs. viruses
Your own immune system is your best option against viruses, and misuse of antibiotics leads to bacteria forming resistances to the antibiotics.
Save the antibiotics for giving your immune system the upper hand when you actually get sick and need them. Heck using antibacterial hand soap is superfluous, using antibiotics of any kind when healthy does not make one any healthier, normal soap and water work just the same without exposing bacteria to the antibiotics and risking them form resistances.
Just some stuff I learned in medical microbio back in Uni that I felt like ranting about. I submit his to die in the usersub.

George Carlin said "Your immune system is an efficient killing machine, but it needs practice." and also "Fuck Imgur"

Nccoffee
I've been eating dirt for years, never get colds.
DrTarte
That's actually not a bad idea, exposing one's self to the bacteria is the best way to gain immunity to them

I hope Batman washed that hand before bitch slapping Robin or that's just plain ignorant.

Vigorously while singing happy birthday twice.

Actually antibacterial soap isn't bad. It's like a nuke. You can't just develop a resistance. Antibiotics on the other hand are more like 1
EldritchShadow
A poison or something of the sort where some can survive and reproduce and get stronger. So yeah don't over use antibiotics
DrTarte
Don't they always say 'kills 99.99% of bacteria' leaving the resistant ones to thrive where they would have otherwise had competition?
PartyProbe
What do you think is in that soap, bleach? No, its usually triclosan. Not a 'nuke' by any stretch and resistance has already been reported
PartyProbe
And theres really no strong evidence that theres any benefit over regular soap either, so yes its bad
EldritchShadow
I heard that about the alcohol based ones so I'm not sure about any others. And if I'm wrong my bad.
PartyProbe
Yeah alcohol is pretty effective but not 100%. Aquired resistance has not been reported but may still be possible in theory
bbsags
Don't you need prescriptions for antibiotics? What kind of doctor would prescribe them for a virus?
SummerGuineaPig
Doctors who want good scores on the survey you get in the mail after ER/hospital visit. Better score =better reimbursement.
unremarkableasterisk
those that have pushy patients that won't stop badgering them.
JantherCan
This is super de duper true
DrTarte
In some third world countries you can buy antibiotics over the counter, and people stockpile them whenever they feel ill. Sad but true
ARabidOrange
My mother in law used to have freely available Tetracycline from Russia.. sooo yeah.
ARabidOrange
To expand: she used to give it to her kids whenever they had a stomach ache.

Doctors who get kick backs for perscribing pharmacy products as a bonus. I used to sell pharmaceuticals.
bbsags
That's fucked, bud. But I guess it happens with other meds with even worse results...
onlyherewhenipoop
Yup that's why doctors perscribe out easily habit forming opioid painkillers like candy.
