He really was an amazing human being, wasn't he?

"He's making it up as he goes along!!"

He used made up languages to illustrate his theories of philology- the evolution of languages over time; sadly a science with lots of racism

Looks like a combination of Thai and Arabic

3 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

Maybe a touch of Ethiopic.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I definitely saw Arabic. Beautiful writing system.

Typo recontextualises the entire sentence: "A star shone until our meeting".

I have never heard Tolkiens voice before. It’s as lovely as I imagined. Thanks for this.

Tolkien was there.

I’m currently listening to the books on Audible, narrated by Andy Serkis. Just amazing.

There's something truly magical about hearing the language in the voice of the master himself.

You know elves aren’t real, right? Right, @OP?

HOW DARE YOU

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

it just dawned on me that despite the language being derrived from Celtic origin, it looks more Arabaic than anything.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Kinda depends which Elvish you're talking about. Sindarin is inspired by Welsh, which is a Celtic language, but Quenya, which is the >

language that the greeting is from, was much more Finnish-inspired.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Had you said that it was an old/formal form of Finnish I would have believed you

'Oh, I've made a mistake.' ... No one can fucking tell, John! Just ... just keep writing or whatever!

He knew one day Stephen Colbert might grow up to see it and had to cover his butt

Stephen Colbert, the Tolkien nerd that makes Poindexters look like Giga-Chads.

I noticed it before I heard him say that, he wrote elem not elen.

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

And he skipped a word, that’s probably what he meant. I should’ve watched the whole thing.

Is this just a simple substitution cipher? Where a specific symbol replaces a specific letter?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not quite. Here is a table with the sounds the letters represent: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengwar#/media/File:Tengwar_modi2_EN.svg

Sweet. Thanks

So arabic written backwards

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 27

It's the Tengwar script used to write Quenya, or i think it's Quenya anyway. It looks aesthetically like Arabic because it's a script

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's supposed to be written. Same as Arabic. Not carved like Latin and the Nordic languages.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Who are you, that you know these things? And thank you ?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just like LoTR and think languages are neat. Tolkiens right when he says they have a flavour.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed!

Confession : growing up, I always thought he was black. I have no idea why I thought this.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Tolkien sounds like token and there was the trope or whatever you want to call it of the "token black guy" maybe?

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Perhaps it was the fact that he was born in Africa?

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That sounds plausible

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Perhaps from the South Park character Tolkien Black ? (formerly Token Black, Token Williams)

that sweetmeat

3 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 1

What exactly is sweet meat?

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My nickname in college

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

sweet·meat: ARCHAIC an item of confectionery or sweet food. "he hurried back to his room like a schoolboy who has stolen a sweetmeat"

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

AFAIK it's just like old timey candies, no actual meat involved

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Hm, my mind immediately went to sweet breads which is uh... Different

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think it's the pancreas or some other organ of an animal.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

That's sweetbreads.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

which is weird that sweatbread is meat and sweetmeat is candy.

The English really butcher English

"It's a rather beautiful language I think" -Guy who literally invented the entire language

“I made a thing a while back and I’m still proud of it.” It’s a great feeling. Everyone should enjoy it more often.

I know a great many artists who are quite critical of their creations lol

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It's the perfect language for a people who are the embodiment of being extra and have a lot of time on their hands.

Tolkien did say he found Finnish to be the most beautiful language on earth.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And visually beautiful but seems wildly influenced by the Arabic alphabet

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a patchwork for sure, I'm bet there are more languages than just Arabic and Finnish involved, but I'm not a linguist. Theories welcome.
