Sweden is burning refuse-gees? This is worse than I thought.

Can confirm, was in Sweden and got a tour of their recycling plant where they also turn human waste into methane for public buses. I helped.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

thats pretty lit

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Grew up in Virginia. There was a landfill nearby that they turned into a hill and built a park around it. It's called Mt. Trashmore.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guess Sweden doesn't throw out a lot of batteries...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We have several incinerator/generator plants in the US. You end up trading groundwater pollution for air pollution.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 5

Sweden has much stricter enviroment protection regulation standards. These plants are as enviroment friendly as is required.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Okay, we will sell you our trash.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well either we also burn it as if its extra coal, or we sell it to sweden for cash. Win win

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 4

its more like sweeden gets payd for taking the trash out if am not mistaken

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I could have sworn America puts their trash in the White house. No? Just this once, Ok

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Got a better idea, sell our trash to Sweden

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I figured this out playing SimCity 3000 like 15 years ago. Trash incinerators ftw, biatch

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pollutants are often measured in parts per million. 1% is a shit load of pollution.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Yeah send all the trash to Sweden, wjere it belongs.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in a city in the us that burns trash for energy. One of a small number.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It would take away from big oil

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait, why trump in particular?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Idk about in other states but in maine we have a plant for burning trash for energy. Probably more than just that one too.

9 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 0

I live in Indiana. Multiple landfills nearby.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Several here in Mass.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yup. There's one about 3 miles down the road from my work, took a tour once it's pretty awesome

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I worked at a company that was landfill free, if it couldn't be recycled it was burned. There are definitely places like this across the US.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

We have at least one in Alabama.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's at least one big one in eastern WA.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah there's 2 around north eastern Washington.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My state, always surprising me with the stuff we do.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's also one in Florida. We even have one specially for rotten oranges and produce

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly every country should be using trash as energy, infrastucture or production. Dumping it in a pile doesnt help anybody.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is a really loaded gif Lots of landfills have the ability to produce energy and can eventually be reclaimed as a park or similar place.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's not like stupid Americans and just dumping their trash everywhere. It probably isn't cost effective if Sweden is the only one doing it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What makes you think Sweden is the only one doing it?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also methane can be harvested from landfills and used for fuel

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wanted to say this too but i only have so many characters.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

only if there is lots of money to be made

9 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 9

The Garbage mountain here in Ohio produces enough natural has to power 16 trucks on the regular.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Apparently there is. The privately run garbage incinerator-electrical generator people have been lobbying to do it in Toronto.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Actually in Europe, well at least in Finland they regulate how much money electricity providers can make so the prices do not skyrocket.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They do this in America as well.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Funny how things are better when there's regulations to 'unfairly limit legitimate businesses ability to generate profits'.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

My house in Sweden had communal hot water. It was fabulous. Never ran out and always hot.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You from UK?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope. Canada. I lived in Sweden for 5yrs.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah, I always assumed that the warm water issue in 1st world countries is only for UK, so this was new.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's no communal hot water in Canada so everyone has a hot water tank. Problem is if you're last to shower, it's possible to be out.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You guys obiously need socialism on watercare. It's a waste of energy if everyone has to have seperate heater. Is that a law or why its so?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cause I could assume that apartment house owners should be able to have communal water heater installed if they agreed on it. Odd if not

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We HAD a trash burning power plant with excellent emissions and 0 smell and the Greenies got it shut down in the 90's. Columbus Ohio.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

During the plant’s operation, it was plagued with problems and was often referred to as the “cash-burning power plant.”

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pantyhose would become entangled .. and bowling balls would break machines, not to mention the toxic fumes being emitted from .. the stacks.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dioxin levels went up for miles around the plant. The plant was shut down in Nov 1994 due to the financial and environmental strains.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes and I lived close to it and smelled zilch but now everything tastes like glitter and soybeans. They could have fixed it w more time.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Americas problem of poor energy management isn't a shortage of solutions, it's energy companies who might lose if they have to change

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

A while back our sole power company in the state wanted to tax people for installing solar panels on their homes. They backed down.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yah my mom has panels, but the price hikes mean she doesn't save at all having them, it's bullshit

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get more solar panels!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sweden also has like 250million less people than America does. Which makes a significant difference when comparing trash.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 11

No it doesn't. You have 50 times more people, you make 50 times more furnaces, what's the difference???

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 6

tip, americans dont understand per capita and likes to blame their size for not being able to implement something...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Plus, we're package-happy here in America. Everything we buy comes with free garbage.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

We also have like 300m people more garbage generated, and more electricity needed, whats your point?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not as a percentage.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

True. WTE plants would be more profitable in US than what they are in Sweden. More poeple - more trash nearby

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

so it is impossible to make more furnaces?

99% non-toxic* *after going through a shitload of filtering systems.

9 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 3

What's your point? Is it bad a bad idea to use filters to prevent as much toxic material as possible from reaching the atmosphere?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No, but I want to get facts straight. Some idiot might start burning his own trash in a barbeque for all I know.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I didn't even consider people might do that but it actually makes perfect sense for some loon to burn his trash. Probably happens already.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rattlesnakes are like 99.9% nontoxic by volume...

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Plus the ash is classified as hazardous waste and extremely difficult to contain effectively

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Not really... There are some of course, but the whole point is to handle most sorting before it's thrown away, i.e. in people's 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

households. In my parent's home for example, we separate by having multiple trash bags, and throwing stuff where it goes as we're piling up.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That way, a lot of the sorting is already done by the time we go to the garbage room and throw it away where it goes.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Here are WTE emission data from 2009, compared to others ?1

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

huh gas is surprisingly clean

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The comparison group isn't including most renewable energy sources, so it doesnt look bad.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the problem with nuclear while it doesnt emit any pollutants the only problem is the spent rods dont decay for 10 thousand years

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Thats a lot of misinformation. fuel rods take much longer than that. Modern reactors dont use them and they dont have this problem (thorium)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thorium is cool and all, but fusion is the way to go. Incredibly safe too.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah fusion would be real cool, if it wasnt perpetually 50 years away. come up with 100 billion in funding and you might be right

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And butt-loads of co2, which isn't toxic but is a greenhouse gas

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

But you can filter the CO2 out

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

And do what with it, send it to space?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's called carbon trapping, you can pump it underground into old oil fields

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That doesn't sound so great, I was more expecting it to be pumped into canisters to be used for a positive purpose.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't that what they do in fracking? There's not allot of scientific data on it I don't think but allot of people near fracking sites -
