Bookstore/Campus store stories

Sep 5, 2016 11:52 PM

This Asian lady comes into our store about mid July and picks up some books for her course saying its for the summer semester and we think nothing of it. Fast forward to last week and this lady throws a fit about us giving her the wrong books for the course she's taking in the fall semester. We highly advise students to wait until their professors send out a syllabus with required materials so we don't have to deal with people getting the wrong text book. In the end it was too late and we couldn't issue a refund for this lady but she ended up buying the right book for class.

This one was a cute and funny thing that happened in store. Mom was in a hurry to buy her books and she let her 3 year old son wonder the aisles for a snack. Little kid didn't get memo and ran out the store with his arms full of bags m&ms. My shift manager ran after the kid while I rang up the moms stuff and told her it was okay and that she could pay for her kids stash of m&ms.

This one happened right after the first day of class. Most students ran out of their classes to come to the bookstore and buy their first batch of books. So the line was rather long and this elderly lady decided to skip the long line and started yelling at a random girl that my coworker was helping. We were all confused because she kept yelling out " Marie!, Hey Marie! Wait for me, I'm sorry for taking long." This girls name isn't even Marie. Girl says she doesn't know this lady and leaves this lady to fend for herself. Manager comes up and tells to wait in line like the rest. Elderly lady doesn't comply and leaves, she came back 3 hours later with her daughter.

So again the line was long again and this new batch of students came in with headphones on. Had to yell at the top of my lungs saying "NEXT IN LINE!" OR "NEXT GUEST" OR "SIR" OR "MAM" OR "COME ON". By the time my shift ended my voice sounded raw and I didn't speak a word to anyone when I left.

Guys don't do this shit, it very annoying at times when there's a huge line of students. We recommend you to at least know what course you're taking or at least have your course schedule. We are glad to help you find the item you are looking for but don't stand in line and waste time just to see if its the right book for you're course. If you guys want to know which book he got it was a understanding arts book and his course was biology.

Manager is in charge of the music we play in store, but corporate sends us a monthly playlist to play in store. Most of the songs are just remixed and sometimes are too catchy you find yourself singing along after a long shift.

cat tax

My university forces me to pay 150$ as "deposit" for bookstore, otherwise I wouldn't touch the place haha

avoid the line, order online and get ebooks if possible

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sounds about right for my college bookstore, but I get my books online from Cheggs so I don't worry about any of this.

Oh man I miss university! University of Victoria alumni here!!!! West coast!!!!!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The lady from the first one probably used the books for a summer session and was trying to return them. Someone pulled that on me before.

That looks a lot like my campus bookstore, @OP is that a stock image or your bookstore? And if that's yours do you happen to be at Tri-c?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The second story what race was the mom?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I worked at a froyo shop that played the same single CD of mixed music for months straight...I feel your manager's pain.

Yay for the Roomba shark kitty!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's my college Bookstore and it makes me very uncomfortable to see it outside my campus

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Don't worry its not your bookstore i'm talking about

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

buy your own textbooks ? now what kind of backwards cheap crap is that, especially taking in that alot of schools over there seem expensive

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of people aren't used to the bizarre and often unethical ways college bookstores do things. These reactions are kind of understandable

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"We let her pay for the m+ms" how... generous?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The next person in line who I can get the attention of without yelling gets helped; the earphone people can stand there and enjoy music.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I agree. Use to do this as a cashier. I didn't give any fucks though.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can't give any. Yelling for an entire shift is not part of a cashier's job.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My uni has a list of books needed for each subject... I just.. You know. Check it like a normal Human

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

My college book store even had the classes printed by the price of the book.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine did, but it was always to the discretion of the instructor if we would even need the book. Waiting for syllabus day has saved me $$$$

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'd get fired in short order. "Is this the book I need for my course?" / "Yes. Yes, it is."

9 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

"Good question. You should research that."

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

"It may or may not be the book you need, but it is certainly one you deserve."

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

say "I think so" so your answer is ambiguous enough it's possible the answer is a no, but also a positive response at the same time

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

@OP I feel you fam I work at a bookstore in AZ and having to do rush for a +70,000 students is hectic and makes you wonder how they got here

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Megaphone?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you can't download it, buy use. If there's no use, buy old edition. If new, split the cost with someone who is taking it later.

For #1, I was trying to understand the significance of the Asian part of the story.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Painting a picture with words.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah, thanks. I was reading it in landscape on my new blue iPhone 7 and got confused about the significance of that part of the story.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She was hard to understand and she didnt understand what we were telling her about her getting not being able to refund her books 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that she bought them for the wrong semester and class

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First day of classes tomorrow and I was able to see this first hand as a customer. It's insane.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Headphones and voice solution? Get flags to wave when you're ready. The movement attracts attention.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Better: Nerf gun. Shoot them in the chest to get their attention, and have signs warning them it'll happen.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What was the relevance of the lady being Asian?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*wander

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Inside with the Asian lady. University stores screw us on books/prices. Should be able to return them to get the right one.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The margins are actually pretty low, and even worse if you consider the deadstock bookstores get stuck with.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

As expensive as they seem to you, they're costly to the store too. Every book you don't sell erases the profits from four you do.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

That's not my problem. You really think one book can cost $300+ to print? No way. There is a huge profit.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Headphones Solution: Nerf gun, sticky darts. They'll get the message.

9 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

Pennies at heads.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Or just start waving to people in line who are paying attention. Serve them first. Show the others that actions have consequences.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I would jut say next, and then wait, if they want to stand there like idiots because they don't have common decency thats their problem.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Yea, but the problem is idiots like that make your job harder because they slow everything down.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I would be getting paid no matter if they decided to stand there and be idiots.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5/? C "can I speak to your manager" Me "alright, one moment" I get my manager, he then takes the phone, and then nods and says "sir ... sir"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

6/6 repeatedly for the next minute or so before the guy hangs up. He yelled so loud I could hear him on the phone standing 15 feet away.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

when people ask me that question i ask for their course number and section number makes it easier to pull up and its easier to find prices

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They didn't know course number just generic name of 20+ classes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its either rare that they know their courses or know which book it is but it all depends on the college

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah, I am used to them not knowing some stuff, but to not even know when your class is or who teaches, it, just wow.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is this Montgomery College? cuz it sounds like Montgomery College.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

its a community college in texas, not gonna which campus because i do not want to lose my job that pays me 7.25 an hr

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ACC? Also, your college should have a human resources department. They can probably help you find a much higher pay part-time job.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

jesus...well our minimum wage in MD is like 8.75 but that's not much better I guess

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i would take that extra 1.50

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yeah but it costs more to live up here in general :\

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

pros and cons everywhere

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Campus bookstore = "corporate"?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Few colleges operate their own store. Most are run by third party companies like B&N, or textbook companies like Follett.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We work under follett

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Elsewhere in the world: University campus Libraries lend course text books for free (or small charges for time extensions).

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This little tip needs waaaay more attention. Saves me hundreds of dollars each semester

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It should be part of the orientation for new students. It was at least on the university where i studied.
