The Goods
I've been a console peasant my whole life, but last year I resolved to change that. So all my savings have been going towards this. As a first-time builder, I debated between buying a third-party build, having my friend help me build it, or building it myself. I probably should have gone with the second option, but by the time the parts arrived, I was too excited to wait.

Baby Steps
I had read the guides, watched the tutorials, consulted the manuals, and moved meticulously slow, but it still took me about six hours just to get to this point. "Lego pieces" my butt. I was terrified of having to apply thermal paste myself and I didn't want to do a test boot with the stock heatsink because I didn't have any rubbing alcohol on hand to clean off the pre-applied thermal paste. So I went ahead and assembled and mounted the x61 pump, only to realize that the mobo got in the way if both the fans and radiator were mounted inside the case. I had to drive out to Walgreens at 3 AM in the freezing cold to pick up isopropyl alcohol and coffee filters, disassemble everything, wipe off the thermal paste, reapply it after several failed attempts, mount the radiator on top of the case by screwing it to the fans underneath (a real pain), and remove the mobo to get the last fan screw in.
At long last, I finally summoned the courage to try turning it on. The liquid cooler fans started spinning and my CPU didn't explode. Good enough for me. The DRAM LED lit up during the POST, but I still could hardly contain my excitement.
First successful boot!
After realizing the problem was caused by the RAM, I had yet another scare because I immediately concluded that I either had bad sticks or I had somehow damaged the mobo ramming it against the I/O shield. But no, I just didn't have the sticks seated completely.
lol what's cable management
The rest of the installation went smoothly, except when I tried unplugging my front panel USB 3.0 connector from the mobo, it took off the pin housing with it. I spent the next half hour trying to pry the housing off the connector and line the mobo pins up with the housing's infinitesimally tiny holes.
After all was said and done, I tied things down to the best of my abilities. I don't get how people are able to do this tidily.
Looking good...
Nice and roomy up front!
Let's go.
Still needs an OS, but it's finished. I'm amazed everything works even after I put my mobo through hell. This has been one of the most frustrating experiences of my life, but it has also been one of the most rewarding. I take a lot of pride in it!

I love the case. The stealth panel for the rad is a clever idea. is the rear fan necessary with the top exhaust?
Melancholy69
Welcome brother. 980 Ti Master Race
Kaosmage
Go hard lined forget that wireless card
Slutswithnuts
Should have gotten the Evga 980 Ti Hybrid ;)
HashtagDadJokes
That is a nice case, but I don't see any reason to buy anything but the Coolermaster HAF.
plasticfanblade
Nice rig! And welcome to the party!
riseofaodh
I have the same case +1
miserableprincess
I built my pc recently, when I would plug in the case fans it would just not post I couldn't figure out why. Finally worked, dunno how lol
CosmicSlothh
Assistance please from tech heads. Whole build is put together and everything I get to boot menu, loads cd drive and hard drive. (1)
CosmicSlothh
Start the boot and it says "nothing on drive to boot from, please select proper drive to boot from" or something like that. (2)
Azhrael
MAy I ask why you choose the Evo and not the Pro SSD?
dashers
My guess would be the other unnecessary extra cost for a domestic system.
ShowMeYourButtonhole
Always upvote NZXT cases.
GodlyGambit
I've done the same thing a year ago. Surprisingly easy to do, even for a first timer like me with no help (other than youtube)
vannet
Good Job, Looks very nice and don't worry about that cable management job, it gets the wires clear
vannet
my advice to anyone else wanting to do this find someone whos done this before, I work at a PC shop and recently had to rescue a few systens

Any particular reason to not go for a Skylake processor?
LavaAxe
Prolly got the parts cheaper. I7 4790k is a beast of a processor though.
Genericcaptain
As an I7-4790k user, can confirm. Wrecks most things.
LavaAxe
i7-4790k bros/brodettes unite!
dentros1
ddr3 ram? Why not ddr4?
vannet
because he's only using a 4th generation CPU not 6th, 4th gen do not support DDR4

Gaming on wifi is a bad idea.. So much packetloss.
omgitsrichie
I only plan on using WiFi when I'm at my parent's house over breaks since there's no coax outlet in my room. I use ethernet at my apartment.
Genericcaptain
Depends. If you have a good card and a decent router you're not going to lose out on much.
Anoxias
Any tips? I've got all the parts in the cart, just waiting for $100 more. I got a 4.7 Ghz AMD 8-core for $100.
Genericcaptain
Also, just because i find it funny and kind if relevant:
Genericcaptain
Avoid the FX series unless you've already got a MOBO that supports them. Say what you want about fanboyism, but Intel makes good CPUs.
Anoxias
I don't really do "Fanboy" siding. Both make good processors that work their own way, but price is my factor.
Genericcaptain
Do some research before you make your purchase at least! Make sure you know everything there is to know about AMD perf. vs Intel perf. .
YouHaveFailedMeForTheLastTimeAdmiral
How much did you spend in total? Looking to upgrade as well, this 9 year old PC is starting to suck more and more
omgitsrichie
1.8k. I spared no expense, haha.
YouHaveFailedMeForTheLastTimeAdmiral
Oh you went all out indeed! I am looking to maybe spend half of that haha. Its a gorgeous build indeed my friend!
GodlyGambit
1800? thats a bit over board but that should hold you high end for a few years Im guessing
Couchmonsta
Why u buy generation 4 when there is 6 .
GmorgsDiet
I spent 2k on 1st gen still rocking it does everything I need. OP: alot better cable management than my first build. Welcome to the club.
ExplosiveMachine
it's a lot cheaper and skylake isn't THAT much better.
Anil666
Are you going to game with that mouse and that keyboard ?
omgitsrichie
No, I just borrowed my parent's dusty peripherals for test boots lol
omgitsrichie
I got a good deal on the 4790K at Micro Center & the marginal performance increase for the 6700K doesn't justify the price difference
Couchmonsta
I did get myself an i5-6600K. Which has roughly the same performance.
omgitsrichie
Also, I'd have to get a mobo with an entirely different socket, and DDR4 RAM is more expensive
TheDuckThatCantQuack
I agree, getting skylake would make more sense in about 6 months when the prices start to drop from insane to crazy
